Ridiculously indulgent things you have recently done for your children that you would only do for them?

Stood at bus stop for 40 mins in rain and howling wind to wait for DD 13 to get off bus as she had forgotten to take her hood attachment to school. The bus stop is maybe 200 metres from our front door.

Arrived at B&Q at 7am in order to get a heated blanket for DS 16, a journey of 8 miles out of my way to work because he casually remarked that he occasionally felt chilly in his bedroom at night and it was going to be the only opportunity of getting to buy before work.

What have you done recently that you accept it indulgent and would only ever do for your children?!

I thought you meant things like adding bath bombs to the Tesco delivery because your toddler wanted a pink bath.

I love my kids but what was the point in a) getting to the bus stop so early and b) going at all when she can just run home with a damp head?

You’re a kinder mum than me OP! 😂

And me! I’d have told the dd, that it would teach her to remember her belongings!

  • Bit off a spiky toenail when there was no toenail clipper available
  • Ate the cold, possibly snot-coated toast crusts I was offered at the breakfast table, and looked grateful

I often get my kids a drink when they are closer to the tap than me. A tiny tiny little bit of me dies inside each time.

Took my 19 year old daughter to work and back on Xmas Eve because she had to get up earlier than usual and she thought she would be too tired to drive 🤭

Soonenough · 13/01/2026 14:13

I drove all the way to pick up my daughter for college as she wasn't feeling well and felt too bad to take train.
Once drove miles away for a gig with my son . And again for a Pokémon convention. I just wanted them to feel that they could always rely on me .

I once ordered six Vesta dried curry 1970s style ready meals for my adult son because he wanted the crispy noodles that don’t seem to be available separately any more. The curries were not wanted, just the noodle garnish. So, then , of course, I had to eat the horrible rehydrated curries to avoid food waste. 😳

CloakedInGucci · 13/01/2026 14:14

I don’t get it? Why would you wait 40 mins? Even if you didn’t want her to get wet couldn’t she text you when the bus was nearly at the stop?

Had an anxious child especially related to going to school so each day after school for most of his primary school years I dropped him off then rush to our local shop to buy him a little present for going to school it could be as small as a kinder egg or as big as a proper toy or I would order bulk presents like stocking fillers to reward him each day it cost me a fortune but he used to love getting his reward after school seeing his face when I surprised him meant the world to me , am not saying it was right but it’s what we had to do for our little school hater .

She doesn’t take a phone to school as none allowed on site.

Hope that assists you with “getting it”

Braved Smyths at 3pm on Christmas Eve because DS(6) boldly told his aunt Santa was getting him a giant lego train set (he’d told someone dressed up as Santa at some fair when I wasn’t around, and ‘Santa’ promised he’d have it! 😬)

Whosthetabbynow · 13/01/2026 14:20

Went to Tesco to get youngest son snacks and Lucozade for his hangover. I love doing stuff for him. I’m like his valet.

Danikm151 · 13/01/2026 14:22

Sat and sorted tiny lego pieces for my son so he can find the pieces easier

I remember when my shy little 6 year old had been invited to a friends house after school for the first time. The friend lived a few minutes walk from the school, but I still went to meet her and walk her to the house. The friends mum looked at me a bit strangely but I knew that if I didn’t she wouldn’t go, and that would’ve been a shame. I figured it would give her the confidence to go, and sure enough it wasn’t long before she was happily skipping off to friends houses.

I would have done this anyway from a safety point of view!

Rushed out to pets at home on Christmas Eve a few years ago to get the cat a present from Santa because small child confidently announced that Santa would be visiting the cat too and it had never occurred to me....! (Had got cat a present from us but child had helped me choose it so couldn't use that). Not sure if that makes me an indulgent parent or indulgent pet owner or both....

Nah we didn’t worry about safety in the 90’s , we just shoved them off to random strangers houses 🤣

Danascully2 · 13/01/2026 14:27

I've spent hours sorting Lego too!!

wonderstuff · 13/01/2026 14:28

I promised dd after she’d had surgery on her feet I’d buy her all the shoes she wanted. She was 4 then and she’s 18 now and to be fair she’s not got particularly expensive taste, but DH and I are still buying all the shoes/trainers she desires. It was a horrible surgery to correct a deformity she was born with.

I picked her up from Reading Festival at midnight last year. I was not alone in that one though, never seen so much traffic in Reading town centre!

DH is the softer parent really, the kids will always go to him first if they want something.

Whosthetabbynow · 13/01/2026 14:28

Oh and gifted my son a large chunk of my inheritance so he could buy a place to live somewhere nice. Loved doing that for him x

This has bought back memories of spending hours sorting loom bands.

Exactly what I would have done. A hangover in anyone aside from my own child…. Zilch sympathy.
