Apologies cant see a thread about this.
Staff at Bristol Brunel academy blocked a visit by Damien Egan, their local MP because he is Jewish. Clear case of antisemitism. AIBU to thinking that headteacher and those driving this decision should be sacked and reported to the Teacher Regulation Agency?
(Apologies thread title isnt correct, but i can't edit it)

It's not because he is Jewish it's because he supports a genocide.

Echobelly · 13/01/2026 13:16

I'm Jewish and from what I gather it was due to his position on Labour Friends of Israel rather than his being Jewish oer we.

If he has vociferously supported the behaviour of the Israel government I can see their point, if not then, yes, that suggests antisemitism.

As for 'threatening to wear keffirs' I can confirm that Jews do not vanish in a puff of smoke at their presence 😂

You don’t want an elected MP to speak about his role?

Its in all the mainstream news, but interesting that is your first thought about a report of antisemitism.

Maybe there is, maybe there isn't but you can't post something and expect people to just believe what you say.

And your evidence for this is?

Yes this is straight of the anti semi’s playbook. If they’re talking about Palestinians it’s self-determination, when they’re talking about Israelis it’s a ‘racist state’

No it is just an opinion about the way Israel has treated non-Jewish people that does not make me an anti-Semite.

Gahr · 13/01/2026 13:24

Grammarnut · 13/01/2026 13:16

I support Israel. I am not Jewish. Would I be banned as well by the keffir brigade who support terrorists?
Politics of any kind have no place in a primary school. Teachers know this. They are not to promote ANY ideology.
Brunel Academy seem to be promoting anti-semitism and support for a proscribed terrorist group i.e. Hamas.

Hear hear. Where I am, there is a stalwart group of Pro Palestine protesters who are all dressed up in their keffirs, and they bang drums and shout. That said, I have noticed that support seems to have fallen off for this issue, to an extent. I notice that fewer young people are sporting keffirs. They are probably going to move on to a new issue at some point.

Has Mr Egan committed genocide - when did this happen?

Surely you're aware that 20—25% of Israel's population isn't Jewish, and those Israeli citizens have equal rights to the Jewish Israelis.

If they are aware, they don't care or choose to ignore that inconvenient fact. Never let the truth get in the way of a good story!

If you believe in democracy, it is plain that an MP with any legal view should not be de-platformed (on an entirely separate topic) by people who dislike his view.

Imagine a pro-Palestinian MP being so threatened by pro-Israeli or anti-terror protesters that he can’t visit a school to talk about a completely unrelated matter. I very much doubt the protesters in this case would consider that a reasonable exercise of the right to protest.

Indeed they wouldn't. In fact, neither would I, even though I don't support Palestine.

What a load of waffling shite. You might try to spin it all you want, but the fact is he is Jewish and has been uninvited due to backing Israel. Had it been a none Jewish person with similar views do you honestly think the decision would be the same?

Yes. If he had been an outspoken Christian Zionist, I’m sure the student body would have been just as angry.

Israel’s non-Jewish citizen population has equal legal rights in theory, though in practice, they suffer a lot of discrimination and unequal access to services. E.g. in a lot of cases train lines connect Jewish towns to the major cities, while skipping Palestinian towns, depriving Palestinians of equal access to educational and employment opportunities.

The population of Palestinians in the West Bank, however, who live under Israeli occupation and control but do not hold Israeli citizenship - despite the evergrowing number of Israeli Jewish settlements in their midst - most certainly do not have equal rights.

HRTQueen · 13/01/2026 13:36

blatant antisemitism being justified

by those, I am guessing, who support calling out racism

Well they do if they are citizens but many do not have that status. Unlike Jews who can become citizens under the law of return, Palestinians cannot return to the lands from which they and their families were forced to leave - race is the determining factor thus it is perfectly legitimate to describe it as a racist state, nothing anti semitic about it.

Kingscallops · 13/01/2026 13:38

5MinuteArgument · 13/01/2026 13:17

Yes, no matter what their political affiliations or beliefs they should keep them out of the school. They are sowing division and feeding growing sectarianism.

Hopefully we can look forward to Bridget Phillipson applying the same rigour in education as Wes Streeting did in the NHS. Political symbols have no place when they are used to intimidate. I won't hold my breath.

Gjill · 13/01/2026 13:41

Saying there is racial discrimination (as there is in every country in the world) is not the same as calling Israeli a ‘racist state’, which implies that its existence is inherently racist.

The fact that people care an awful lot more about racial discrimination in Israel than anywhere else is very telling though.

Palestinians in the West Bank are governed by the PA. Christians, Muslims and other non Jews in Israel have equal rights and serve as Members of the Knesset (Parliament).

Hear hear. I loathe the Netanyahu government for what they have done in Gaza but what I loathe more is Jews being required to be performatively anti Israel as the price of admission to the right thinking people’s club.

No other minority group is expected to express disapproval of it’s right to statehood.

Its antisemitism. Of course it is.

I think its more than that isnt it. How many palestinians/Gazans/supporters are required to perform anti Hamas and anti terrorist discourse everytime they open their mouths or be 'cancelled' if they dont. And they usually dont.

Nor have the Jews expelled from their homes in other Muslim countries 750k est between 1948 and early 1950s I believe) any right of return!

Firstly, it’s not simply about race. You could be a Jewish convert.

Secondly, there is an obvious and unique reason why Israel was set up with immigration rules as they are. It’s disingenuous and yes, racist, to deny that.

https://holocaustremembrance.com/resources/working-definition-antisemitism

It absurd really. Jews are persecuted for centuries and eventually 1/3 of them are murdered. A Jewish state is set up to provide a safe place for those that remain. But it’s the Jewish state that’s racist, because it lets in Jews.
