Apologies cant see a thread about this.
Staff at Bristol Brunel academy blocked a visit by Damien Egan, their local MP because he is Jewish. Clear case of antisemitism. AIBU to thinking that headteacher and those driving this decision should be sacked and reported to the Teacher Regulation Agency?

For those taking about the right to protest, I wonder if you'd be saying the same it the visitor were not Jewish? Let's replace the Jew with a black speaker, on the grounds they are black. There is absolutely no difference whatsoever.

EverythingYouLoseIsAStepYouTake · 13/01/2026 12:57

It's not up to me - not my school or constituency. If the people affected wish to peacefully protest a future planned visit that remains their right. I obviously would not support anyone protesting Egan for being Jewish (which is not what has happened here).

Any threats to Egan's safety are unacceptable; protest is only legitimate if it is peaceful and does not threaten or cause harm to safety.

Hopefully he can attend and a way can be found to maintain safety.

Expressing political views in a school IS inappropriate. There will be teachers, constituents and pupils at that school who don't agree with the ban but who feel intimidated into silence. So bad.

He was going to talk about his work as an MP not expressing his political views.

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026/jan/12/jewish-mps-visit-to-school-cancelled-after-concerns-raised-by-pro-palestine-group

It's not because he's Jewish, it's because he's pro-Israel. He's part of Friends Of Israel at Westminster and visited Israel to show support for their government, apparently.

I don't agree at all with banning him, but it's not true to claim it's antisemitism. Being pro Netanyahu is nothing to do with the Jewish community world wide.

My own MP is Jewish and has been going to Israel and Gaza for decades as part of a peace delegation to support both communities.

Why shouldn't he be pro Israel. Seems ok to be pro hamas?

suziequeue1 · 13/01/2026 12:56

No, it's not cause he is jewish, it's cause he is a hard-core zionist and supports a genocide.

What on earth are you talking about?

Well it didn't work with the Villa football match and the bullying fascists had their way with that one. As for the staff threatening to wear keffiyehs, I would be interviewing every single one and asking them to explain the reasoning behind this. It's time these cowards were put on the spot and made to feel the intimidation that Jews feel. This one sided shit has gone too far in the public sector, where employees are paid to remain profession and impartial.

I think she meant the staff or whoever celebrating the ban on the NEU FB site. And this

Speaking at a Jewish Labour Movement conference in north London on Sunday, he said: “I have a colleague who is Jewish, who has been banned from visiting a school and refused permission to visit a school in his own constituency, in case his presence inflames the teachers. That is an absolute outrage.”

It’s grotesque, replace it with “black” and you’ll know if something is racist or not for anyone who’s not clear on it. Just disgusted with these people.

I am disgusted with people dishing out false accusations of racism in order to defend a racist state.

Ah, so you're antisemitic. Please don't refer to the word racism when you are advocating it. It makes you look like a hypocrite.

Twiglets1 · 13/01/2026 13:06

80% of people in this poll agree with you @Carycach4

The rest somehow seem to think it’s ok to cancel an event because the speaker happens to be Jewish & not surprisingly has links with Israel.

He wasn’t there to talk about the war but to talk about being an MP. Imagine excluding a Muslim MP or Christian MP from talking about their job because of conflicts going on in other parts of the world!

I don’t know if he’s a ‘hard core Zionist’ but if he is, that’s a perfectly legitimate position. What evidence is there that he supports genocide?

No, but I can't imagine a Muslim MP not being allowed. Christianity, as well as Judaism is perfectly OK to bash.

Yes this is straight of the anti semi’s playbook. If they’re talking about Palestinians it’s self-determination, when they’re talking about Israelis it’s a ‘racist state’

ThatCyanCat · 13/01/2026 13:10

It never ends does it? Wonder if the 20% of dissidents will put posts to their votes? We've already seen two antisemitic posts on here.

Where is your evidence that anyone has expressed a political view in a school? This has not been reported in any articles.

Teachers at the school, members of the NEU, called for the ban. That counts as expressing a political view in my book.

I wouldn't want them teaching my kids. Education is about paving the way to different views and ideas. Awful practice.

Gjill · 13/01/2026 13:14

The right to protest is restricted in order to balance it with other freedoms. If they had to cancel the talk because of safety risks, by definition the protest has crossed a line because it has impacted others’ right to safety, free association etc.

In a democracy the right to protest is not unlimited. Unlimited protest is simply mob rule.

Did they? Can you send your evidence? The only thing I can find is that the NEU has made statements regarding the views of those it represents, but I have seen no reporting of any teachers sharing any political views in schools.

Grammarnut · 13/01/2026 13:16

I support Israel. I am not Jewish. Would I be banned as well by the keffir brigade who support terrorists?
Politics of any kind have no place in a primary school. Teachers know this. They are not to promote ANY ideology.
Brunel Academy seem to be promoting anti-semitism and support for a proscribed terrorist group i.e. Hamas.

In this case, those protesters rights to protest trumped the children's rights to hear and learn about democracy from their local MP. Some are ok with that it seems.

Echobelly · 13/01/2026 13:16

I'm Jewish and from what I gather it was due to his position on Labour Friends of Israel rather than his being Jewish oer we.

If he has vociferously supported the behaviour of the Israel government I can see their point, if not then, yes, that suggests antisemitism.

As for 'threatening to wear keffirs' I can confirm that Jews do not vanish in a puff of smoke at their presence 😂

Yes, no matter what their political affiliations or beliefs they should keep them out of the school. They are sowing division and feeding growing sectarianism.

Kingscallops · 13/01/2026 13:18

The best thing Mr Egan can do is bring a discrimination claim against the Department of Education or whoever oversees postgraduate education. It's high time this nonsense was stopped.

Apologies its Brunel Academy. So Dept for Education then.
