Apologies cant see a thread about this.
Staff at Bristol Brunel academy blocked a visit by Damien Egan, their local MP because he is Jewish. Clear case of antisemitism. AIBU to thinking that headteacher and those driving this decision should be sacked and reported to the Teacher Regulation Agency?
(Apologies thread title isnt correct, but i can't edit it)

What do you mean? The problem with what

As in it will go ahead, but in a safer venue.

Edited to add after your edit: safety should be a given.

The problem is that it’s depressing an elected Jewish MP is subject to lack of safety to the extent police advice is required when he was due to speak about his role / democracy and that’s it.

Cancelled due to safety concerns often means it’s Jewish participation that is cancelled or changed and it’s not them causing the lack of safety.

To that point, I agree absolutely, He is entitled to feel as safe as any other MP or person doing about their job.

But the OP was calling for the HT to be sacked.

The country of Israel has sanctioned IDF to kill
Palestinians indiscriminately.

IDF doesn’t operate in a vacuum.

It's funny. Every single thread about antisemitism, here you are to deflrct and minimise.

Don't you remember what you said? If you thought it unfair and in bad faith that posters were not making helpful contributions to a thread, I don't see why you're doing exactly the same thing here. This isn't about Gaza, this is about the exclusion of a Jewish MP which potentially represents discrimination and prejudice. As an advocate of the same, I thought you would be here in support? No ifs and buts.

JHound · 14/01/2026 09:48

OP can you post a link to this story?

I post on whatever thread is in ‘trending’. Are my posts on other threads funny too?

It’s possible to have a rage of views. I can agree with EasternStandard that a Jewish MP needing security is depressing and I can also want to know why the HT acted as they did.

From what was put in the Guardian article I don’t think the HT should be, they had to make a decision on what they knew about the protests and getting police advice seems a good idea.

I think it’s problematic for other reasons not the HT. just that a Jewish MP can’t discuss his role in a school (without changes anyway if it goes ahead).

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026/jan/12/jewish-mps-visit-to-school-cancelled-after-concerns-raised-by-pro-palestine-group

It's not because he's Jewish, it's because he's pro-Israel. He's part of Friends Of Israel at Westminster and visited Israel to show support for their government, apparently.

I don't agree at all with banning him, but it's not true to claim it's antisemitism. Being pro Netanyahu is nothing to do with the Jewish community world wide.

My own MP is Jewish and has been going to Israel and Gaza for decades as part of a peace delegation to support both communities.

Oh thanks for the link.

So not anti-Semitic in the slightest then.

Is this deliberate conflation of “pro-Israel” and “Jewish” deliberate OP?

I hope Starmer intervenes. He deemed it worthy on the Aston Villa match. As he's a proponent of free speech, I don't hold out much hope. His radar seems to be a little off on these matters.

Do you apply the same rationale to any other form of racism? Do you ask for links just so you can make a late entry, which has failed, on Black Lives matter threads?

The post you’re responding to isn’t correct, the slurs on the MP don’t justify this. And it’s not why the HT has acted anyway.

I understand (from
the article mentioned by EasternStandard) that the school had already arranged a new date for the talk:

“On the evening before Mr Egan’s scheduled visit, we were made aware of plans for a public protest outside the school. We opted to postpone Mr Egan’s visit to ensure everyone would continue to feel safe when entering and exiting school and to prevent any disruption to our students’ learning.

“We have remained in contact with Mr Egan, and an alternative date for his visit was arranged some time ago. We have also been in contact with the police and followed their advice.”

There is no racism here so your comment makes no sense. I do apply the “same rationale” in that I do not conflate criticism of political beliefs with bigotry towards ethno-religious / racial identity.

And yes - I ask OPs for all links for all public stories where one is not provided.

Yes, antisemitic.

He wasn't visiting the school to discuss Gaza so why is his voting record on the matter relevant? Not that his voting record even shows anything significant, just that he is for a two state solution. If people take issue with that, they are the problem, not the MP in question.

His voting record on Gaza was only investigated and purposely skewed because he is Jewish. They wouldn't have bothered smearing his name if he wasn't Jewish. So it's antisemitic.

So you don't think racism has taken place. The MP was going to talk to kids about career paths yet was prevented for safeguarding reasons. I do wonder what threat Mr Egan personally posed.

SailorSong · 14/01/2026 10:09

Given the police's appalling handling of the Maccabi fans' ban (also under the banner of safety) and the obvious parallels between the two situations I would certainly not be trusting their advice on this issue.

I don’t think he posed any threat and don’t think he should have been banned. I don’t care about his stance on Israel.

But I don’t consider that it’s racist to bar somebody from speaking at a school because of safety concerns prompted by their position on a topic, be it Israel or “BLM” (🙄) .

If it wasn’t a Jewish MP but a black MP would you be ok that they couldn’t turn up to a school to talk about their role as an MP?

If the same reason was given, cancelled or moved due to safety concerns would you say ok to that?

No one has yet been able to quote him on his views about Israel.

He's a member of friends of Israel which is not pro BN and in favour of a 2SS.

There will be many teachers in the school and all over the country with similar, non shocking views.

So its very difficult to come to any other conclusion other than this is about him being Jewish.

Which is clearly problematic.
