Embarrassing problem!

NC for this. For the past week or so I’ve been so gassy! My stomach feels like it’s permanently bloated and gurgling. I’m farting like a trooper and have been burping lots too. At the beginning I had a couple of episodes of diarrhoea but that seems to have cleared up now, however the stomach issues and constant explosive farts have not. It’s so embarrassing!

Initially thought it might be a bug. It sounds like IBS but I don’t usually suffer from that. And the weird thing is my appetite hasn’t reduced, if anything I feel hungrier. I’m approaching 40 and wondering if this could be something to do with peri? Or maybe it is just a lingering bug. Does anyone have any tips? I bought some probiotics today just to see if they help.

Get tested for giardia! My brother had it last year. He was also really gassy. Apparently there is a lot of it about in London (I think DB picked it up from swimming in the Thames).

Imodium helps calm me down. I’d make an appointment with the GP if it continues as a normal bug would clear up by now.

I did take an Imodium at the start but wasn’t sure if that was the best idea if it was a bug. However I had a busy work day out and about and couldn’t afford to be caught short!

It stopped the diarrhoea temporarily but it didn’t ease the gurgling. All the advice online says to see a GP after 3 weeks if symptoms persist and it’s only been a week (ish). It still feels like a long time when you’re constantly bloated and windy though.

I would go and have a chat with a pharmacist. It sounds very uncomfortable for you. Pharmacist can help with all sorts and will be able to give you the best idea about when or if you need to see a Doctor

Thank you I will try this tomorrow. It’s so weird because I can feel fine for periods of the day and then I eat something and get the worst cramps, gas and diarrhoea. I took an Imodium this morning but it didn’t last the day! So grim. I will try and get some windeeze or something like that tomorrow.

Peppermint tea/capsules can help with bloating and wind. I always found Imodium whilst helping with the toilet side of things gave me horrendous stomach pains 🥴
Definitely have a chat with a pharmacist/GP if you can.

Try not to eat anything greasy and avoid dairy. I’ve had bouts of this throughout my life, to me it was coupled with something stressful. For myself, I’m still not discounting episodes of IBS, though sometimes they are years apart!

Peppermint tea.

AhBiscuits · 13/01/2026 21:22

I assume you aren't on Mounjaro? Because that would do it.

Peppermint tea should help. Try and avoid beans, broccoli, cabbage.

Have you tried charcoal tablets? I think I read that they can help with this sort of thing.

Migrainedays · 13/01/2026 21:51

Im windy for days if i do yoga.
Im sorry worse a week before my period is due and a few days in to it.

WhereIsMyJumper · 13/01/2026 21:53

If it’s only been going on for a week I wouldn’t worry. Unless you’ve massively changed your diet - it could be a little virus and just needs time to clear

WhereIsMyJumper · 13/01/2026 21:54

I’m farty nearly all the time though so it’s normal for me 😂 I think I do have IBS though. And have been eating healthy lately with lots of fibre so that’ll be it

PashaMinaMio · 13/01/2026 21:58

Read up about gut health.
Stop eating ultra processed food. Read the supermarket ingredients’ labels. Don’t eat fast food rubbish.
Drink more water. Drink warm boiled water first thing.
In other words, clean up your system.

This is excellent life advice but I am far less farty if I eat processed crap and far more farty if i eat healthy food 😂
