What’s happened to my hair?!

Early 40’s- always had fine hair but a lot of it. Been dyeing hair for decades now so hair not as in as great condition as someone who has more natural non bleached hair but recently I noticed my hair is so thin! It’s much more difficult to style now and I just don’t have so much hair especially the dudes!

what happened?! Is it simply hormones?

Hormones and all those years dyeing it have ruined it😬 I'm 39 and mines turning shit too even though I haven't dyed it since I was a teenager 😭

Welcome to perimenopause. I’m 45 and my hair recently started thinning loads and every time I wash it I have a small handful come out, rather than just a few strands. Started HRT a few weeks back and it’s already showing little bits of regrowth, a bit like post pregnancy. I’m also now taking supplements, using a growth shampoo and collagen too. HRT is making me feel massively bloated though, so trading one thing that makes me feel like shit for another - will see if it’s worth it after a couple more months.

How's your diet, do you get plenty of protien, vitamins and iron? Have you been under prolonged stress, or had a recent malting phase?

I don't believe that dyeing your hair can make it actually grow thinner, but it can ruin the texture and strength of existing hair if done too frequently or badly. Hair texture can change as we age, some find it gets finer or dryer, and some find it gets sort of wirey and less staight/smooth (like a witch). Hair loss can also occur as we age, but it's not considered 'normal', so if you're concerned it's got much thinner I'd get advice from a doctor.

I'm in the same boat. 42 and I now have a bob because my lovely thick brown hair has become like a translucent veil. I first lost loads of hair post-partum, then had another shed a couple of years ago, and its never come back. All hormonal. It sucks.
