Sims removed but otherwise just as they were

I'd been keeping of them to "destroy securely" but they're driving me insane around the house so enough was enough

Will I get digitally kidnapped now? They were really old and shit phones.

I’m gonna post in defence of OP 😆

Sure, I have seen battery recycling buckets at supermarkets, but honestly, I wish I were the kind of person who had space in my head to have a little pot for them and then the headroom to take them to the supermarket!

Often, I don’t even have my shopping bags, usually because the supermarket isn’t a planned trip and I need to dash in en route to/from somewhere.

Put a pot in your kitchen now - take two minutes away from the screen to do it. People with very busy and complex lives manage it. It's lazy to say otherwise.
Do you remember to tax your car? Or do you not have the headroom? Also the law...

YellowPixie · 11/01/2026 21:03

We live in the Glasgow suburbs and a few years ago the council moved to a 7-day collection model. We don't get our bins collected on a Sunday, but other streets do.

I cannot believe that anyone who has eyes in their head has not seen the plastic tubs and bins in EVERY supermarket for recycling batteries.

Pavementworrier · 11/01/2026 21:04

I genuinely didn't know all this stuff

I'm educated and plugged in but had no clue

I don't feel bad about that but I note the OMG DUHHHH tone on the thread

Is this why so many people say "I have ADHD"? Because Mumsnet society can only tolerate dissent from their world view if there's a pathology behind it?

If they had batteries in, you definitely shouldn't have put them in the bin. Lithium batteries are a fire risk.

In all honesty, I think it’s funny how you’re so invested in other people’s lives!!!

And I am completely unamused by your lack of investment in caring for the environment around us, or the health/wellbeing of every single living organism on the planet...

But you do you... enjoy your small-minded village life... let's hope the next generation aren't quite as useless

They used to all have those sooty rnib charity boxes too but doesn't mean it was The Law to put 20p in them

My council actually give you a battery recycling bag!
You definitely need to stop binning them! It’s dangerous.

And which flag features a ship(wreck) and a sheep? It's a good one!

Edited

Is it the flag of the Baaa-rmuda triangle?

Quite honestly I think this is your religion. It ain't everyone's. The world will be fine.

Where do you recycle batteries to?

Never heard of doing that where I live!

Almost anywhere that sells batteries or electrical equipment should have a bin for recycling batteries. Most supermarkets do, Currys do...

ChaliceinWonderland · 11/01/2026 21:08

Resell them on backmarket.

I think the tone was more: Now you've been told, why are you doubling down and being a dickhead about it? You just told everyone how clever you were.

You didn't say thanks - you said: Where's the evidence? Repeatedly, despite being shown the evidence, repeatedly. At legislative and local authority level.

And then said you weren't going to do it anyway in the future... explain that then.

Specifically the fining provision

The overarching legislation you’re looking for is in the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009. The penalties that can be imposed on individuals are done so by Local authorities, who have broad powers to issue Fixed Penalty Notices for various waste offences. The main bits of legislation that give them those powers are The Environmental Protection Act 1990 and The Clean Neighbourhoods and Environmental Act 2005. The sections that give them the power in the case of batteries generally fall under fly tipping (using the wrong bin or leaving in the wrong place) or duty of care (risk of fire). The first course of action is a Fixed Penalty Notices of100, but failure to pay can lead to prosecution in the magistrates court and a criminal record, along with much higher fine.

But, unless you’ve been living under a rock for the best part of 20 years this stuff is basic general knowledge. Many councils will collect batteries on recycling days if put out alongside the recycling bin, as they will for small electrical appliances as well. Most supermarkets also have battery recycling points, as do some other retailers. It appears really do walk among us…we need more immigrants, at least they possess common sense ;)

Pavementworrier · 11/01/2026 19:25

I just don't believe most people recycle this stuff

Maybe this thread should be titled aibu to think nobody recycles batteries

Go to any supermarket and the constantly overflowing battery recycle bins will tell you that, yes, most people recycle their batteries.

KaleQueen · 11/01/2026 21:15

@Pavementworrier ‘you shouldn’t throw batteries or indeed toasters in the bin’ isn’t an ‘opinion’ fgs. Now you know, if you continue to do it, then you’re wilfully destroying our planet and also potentially causing injury to very low paid but extremely hard working bin men (saying men, never once seen a woman)

smithsgj · 11/01/2026 21:16

BertieBotts · 11/01/2026 20:31

Talking of kegels. I do enjoy the acronym for "Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment" though Grin

All distributors must:

  • offer free takeback on WEEE
  • accept WEEE for free from customers supplied with like-for-like products, regardless of whether this is done in store, online or by mail order
  • retain a record of all WEEE taken back for at least four years
  • provide customers access to written information on the service provided and what they should do with their WEEE

You taking the piss?

Waterbaby41 · 11/01/2026 21:16

Shame you did that - there are charities that take old phones, and make funds from the recycling.

shhblackbag · 11/01/2026 21:16

Arlanymor · 11/01/2026 18:47

No but you take them to the tip so they can be disposed of properly.

Yes. My god, I thought that was common sense. The bin...

Pavementworrier · 11/01/2026 19:33

Well I had zero idea and I've binned a fair few over the years

I always recycle batteries to Tesco they have a bin for them

godmum56 · 11/01/2026 21:17

MolkosTeenageAngst · 11/01/2026 20:29

Wow! Honestly I had no idea and throw regular batteries away fairly regularly. Definitely will make an effort to remember not to moving forward. Am surprised this isn’t more widely shared though - my wheelie bin says ‘no hot ashes’ on it but no mention of batteries!

Edited

it IS very widely shared and has been since the law came in.

I couldn't care less if you respect my opinion or not. You don't know me, I don't know you (nor want to).

But you should respect the law and your place in civil society. Otherwise you're a selfish cretin aren't you?

But I have just remembered that @gamerchick mentioned you're a bored shit stirrer. So I will leave you to your Pot Noodle and your YouTube channel with 12 followers.
