To have thrown a bunch of smashed up old mobile phones in the bin

Sims removed but otherwise just as they were

I'd been keeping of them to "destroy securely" but they're driving me insane around the house so enough was enough

Will I get digitally kidnapped now? They were really old and shit phones.

Croydon

And Warwickshire

DiscoBeat · 11/01/2026 20:41

You shouldn't put them in the bin. Electronics need to be recycled separately.

So you never leave your village, or know anyone who leaves your village, or anyone else who could help who visits supermarkets/libraries/pharmacies? If you have no physical way of recycling your batteries and no way of finding anyone to help you then please call your council and they will advise. Surely this is obvious though?

In all honesty, I think it’s funny how you’re so invested in other people’s lives!!!

Barney16 · 11/01/2026 20:42

I did know you shouldn't bin batteries which means I have loads of dead batteries hanging around my house. You want complicated recycling OP, I raise you empty paint tins.

In all honestly I think it's funny that you're spoofing a thread about a legal requirement in the United Kingdom that has serious consequences and are wasting people's time who are well-meaning. You are indeed small, Brenda.

Thewonderfuleveryday · 11/01/2026 20:47

bertie apologies, I retract the bashing with a hammer comment. Do not try this!

The phones and tablets I put in electrical recycling have always been smashed up by my child with SEN.

ByWarmShark · 11/01/2026 20:48

I was a bit lazy about recycling batteries until I read the stats on the number of fires started due to poor waste disposal, now i'm meticulous about proper recycling. I think a lot of people are like the old me and just don't realise how bad a risk it really is.

HoldingTheDoor · 11/01/2026 19:04

Please don’t throw old lithium batteries in the bin. It is extremely dangerous for the bin men and can cause a fire. They can and should be taken to a recycling centre.

Edited

That's what we are told, but last week I left a bag of batteries and small electrical items on top of the recycling bin as we are supposed to do (they put them in a special cupboard in the bin lorry to go to e-waste), and by chance I looked out the window and saw the bin man chuck the whole bag inside the wheelie bin and then empty it into the wagon. So clearly they aren't too worried about fires.

TerrysNeapolitan · 11/01/2026 20:49

These should be recycled in Small Electrical's at your local tip

Yes and a sign on bags of peanuts stating that they contain peanuts.

Shit me, that's not right is it?
Why don't they tell people that? I have literally never seen that written anywhere. Not saying they're not there but I have never seen that ever.

Where I live people are too busy to read peanut packets. We just have one big communal peanut packet outside our building and all help ourselves. It's one of the serious benefits of living where I do. Why isn't there a big sticker on the massive packet?

I cannot believe that most people know peanuts contain peanuts.

Is there legislation about peanuts being in peanuts? Links please.

I'm off now to put up giraffe flags on all the local lamp posts.

Parsleyforme · 11/01/2026 20:53

A bin man was hurt when something with a battery in caused a rubbish van to explode near me. I saw the video and I knew they could catch fire, especially in water, but never knew there could be an explosion like that. I put my batteries in a bag in a cupboard and take them to Sainsbury’s when I can be bothered. Very real risk of someone being seriously hurt as the rubbish is crushed

One person doing one stupid thing doesn't equal we should all stop obeying the law.

I would probably put a toaster in the bin yes. The TV wouldn't fit so I'd book a special collection from the council.

😂😂😂 this is deffo a wind up. Come on. A toaster???

do you recycle anything?

Pavementworrier · 11/01/2026 20:55

I see an estimated 34% of batteries are recycled and the rest end up in landfill (presumably this stat is imperfect).

That's more than I expected but clearly "everyone" isn't doing it

Long live TANGANYIKA!!!!!!!

Hollyhobbi · 11/01/2026 20:56

Maybe the op lives in Spain. They have nightly bin collections and are dreadful about separating waste. Plus they are large communal bins so they couldn't go through them and fine individuals.

Probably would have mentioned that five pages ago...

Tippexy · 11/01/2026 20:58

I’m gonna post in defence of OP 😆

Sure, I have seen battery recycling buckets at supermarkets, but honestly, I wish I were the kind of person who had space in my head to have a little pot for them and then the headroom to take them to the supermarket!

Often, I don’t even have my shopping bags, usually because the supermarket isn’t a planned trip and I need to dash in en route to/from somewhere.

I just don't believe most people recycle this stuff

Maybe this thread should be titled aibu to think nobody recycles batteries

Every shop that sells batteries has to provide a recycling centre for old batteries. This has been the law for several years.

Always amazed at the way people are happy to display their ignorance in public with such pride.
