To have thrown a bunch of smashed up old mobile phones in the bin

Sims removed but otherwise just as they were

I'd been keeping of them to "destroy securely" but they're driving me insane around the house so enough was enough

Will I get digitally kidnapped now? They were really old and shit phones.

Then just ask where you should put them, they sell batteries, by jaw they have to take them for recycling! But their bin may be behind the counter out of the way in a small shop

Only if they sell more than 36 kilograms in weight per annum, that's a lot of AA batteries.

DeftWasp · 12/01/2026 19:12

WinterWooliesBaa · 12/01/2026 18:28

FFS

What is so difficult about it that you can't do? Most other people give a shit about the environment enough to put different types of waste in different bins without it taking much thought or time.

even pre school kids can manage it!!

Good for them, the joy is I only have a general waste bin, it all goes in.

No it's not, it's about 4 AA batteries a day.

besides whether they have to or not by law, every single Tesco has one, it's their policy.

Lazy, irresponsible behaviour, you should be ashamed of yourself, not boastful.

Well, that is depressing. You can recycle them so many places. Tescos, Sainsburys, Rymans, Robert Dyas, in many councils on top of your recycling bin, the rubbish tip...

I seriously thought that everyone would do it unless that have absolutely no care for our planet at all.

It's depressing how many people on here, most with children, don't care

Astra53 · 12/01/2026 19:25

There are battery recycle points in supermarkets, normally in libraries and at the recycle centre. Very large companies normally offer battery and small electrical recycling. Phones can be posted free of charge to many organisations to be dealt with.

I wouldn't worry - it's definitely not mainstream knowledge it's just that being aggressive about this sort of thing is some people's personalities.

It definitely is mainstream knowledge, but some people are apparently too self obsessed to be interested in absorbing anything which isn't about them.

You are coming across as an ignorant and immature.

This is so true and is something I often think of.

I am older and don't have children but I am concerned about the world I leave behind. I can't understand how some parents aren't really motivated to leave the world a better place wherever and however they can.

its 4 a day, less if they also sell larger batteries.

godmum56 · 12/01/2026 10:34

do either of them sell batteries?

Yes, but they don’t have anywhere for you to recycle them

BrendaSmall · 12/01/2026 20:21

Manxexile · 12/01/2026 14:31

Have you actually asked them where their battery recycling bin is?

The law says they have to have one

Well neither of them have anywhere

BettysRoasties · 12/01/2026 20:22

Wait I can’t put my toaster in the bin?

We get a lot of lorry fires here meant to be able to put batteries in a clear bag ontop of the bin and the bin men take them. What happens is they dump the bag on the floor 🤦🏻‍♀️

I looked it up and all Tesco and Co op branches have small battery recycling bins near the checkout.

Nope!
not these two!

BrendaSmall · 12/01/2026 20:23

Womaninhouse17 · 12/01/2026 17:07

Have you asked? Sometimes the bin isn't on display. Chemists might also have one. Or ask your local council if any local shops do.

They don’t have anywhere to recycle them , also we’ve not got a chemist

I haven’t, to be honest with you i don’t own anything that actually uses AA/AAA batteries or other size batteries, only things i used to change batteries for were hearing aids and I’d put them in a box at work, other people have asked, someone recently even done a post on our local facebook group asking about it

TheLette · 12/01/2026 20:32

You can recycle a lot of stuff OP, you just need to use Google / check your local council website. It is never too late to learn. In this case it IS dangerous to put lithium batteries in the bin. There was a lorry fire in my area very recently for this exact issue, it must be terrifying for the bin men not to mention the cost of dealing with the fire, repairing the lorry and all the inconvenience as a result (people not getting their waste collected on time, traffic jams, all sorts). Imagine if the fire happened directly outside your house, too. These kinds of fires are very well publicised in the news and on billboards. Similar issues exist with ebike and escooter batteries.

Whilst it is sometimes inconvenient to go to the tip, they are local by their nature and should be used when there are good safety reasons for doing so. If you are disabled and genuinely cannot go I imagine there is provision for this (I have no idea) or a friend or family member would go for you.

There's no need to be defensive about what is clearly news to you. Just learn from it, do the right thing next time, and move on. Fines are irrelevant when there is good reason not to put dangerous things in the bin. The desire to prevent property damage / injury / inconvenience is surely a sufficient deterrent?

well now you have an answer. Tell them to look for a bin in shops that sell batteries. If they can't see a bin then ask the staff.

namechangetheworld · 12/01/2026 20:55

I didn't realise you couldn't put batteries in the general waste either OP. Regularly do it at work (where we get through LOT of batteries), as do my colleagues. It makes sense now I think about it, but I've honestly never given it a second thought before this thread.

It's depressing how many people on here, most with children, don't care

Sometimes it's not exactly not caring. Our council pretends that if you put batteries in a clear plastic bag out with the recycling, that they will recycle them. Every time me or a neighbour has done this, the batteries end up being left by the recycling crew. Sometimes they end up on the street which is then really dangerous for dogs etc. So I no longer put the batteries out for recycling because I know that the council won't recycle them. Hence, they are put in my black bin.

Yes, I know places have battery recycling (eg boots) - but guess what - the council have started charging for parking near those places so I don't go there unless absolutely necessary. Which is extremely infrequent.

And the tip? Well you have to book now. And the last time I took a large glass shower door to the tip for recycling, they said oh put it in the non recyclable as glass is full.

The council actively fucks everything up. There is only so much I can do in the face of such utter arseholery, incompentence and theft.

I don't blame the OP for slinging out mobile phones.

Either more than one council is doing this or you live near me. Sad either way.

Which people? How do you know? Does your village have some kind of newsletter of questions asked in the Coop?

Is this true? We sell A LOT of batteries at our workplace. I've worked there for five years now and never once been asked to take them back for recycling - we don't even have a recycling bin because our boss refuses to pay extra, everything just goes in the black bin.
