To be slightly hmm about this situation in Sommerfields?

I went into scummerfields with dd two or three days ago and she wanted an ice lolly so i went to the small ice cream freezer they have and ALL the ice lollies /ice creams were mishapen having obviously been totally melted and then refrozen. Needless to say I told a manager presuming that they didn't know and I bought a multi-pack from the freezer section so as not to disappoint dd (and as it was a multi pack I had one too).

So I go in today and notice that the SAME ice creams are still in the freezer, still melted and refrozen So I complained explained to another manager how dangerous this was and how I had complained two days ago about it. He was apologetic and said he would deal with it immediately and said he knew it was dangerous but really FFS, this is basic food safety, if this is how little they care in front of the public God knows what goes on behind the scenes

Not unreasonable at all: good on you. Worth reporting it to central Somerfields mgmt if you can be bothered finding a way to do it. Or call Council dept responsible for inspections.

TrinityRhino · 12/06/2008 18:29

i didn't think water and flavourings being defrosted and then refrozen would be a problem

and I'm a paniky food woman with serious issues about food safety

No not just ice lollies but ice creams, bacteria loves melted ice cream and you should never, ever refreeze ice cream that has been totally melted as it is v risky.

yanbu, i had a horrible case of food poisoning after eating a refrozen'funny foot'(remember those?) when i was little.

Yabbadabbadooo · 12/06/2008 19:27

Worst food poisoning of my life was from re-frozen ice-cream. I was only 10 and I still remember it vividly. You did the right thing.

Somerfield and Morrisons are notoriously bad about this kind of thing. I've had "fizzy" (fermenting) Innocent smoothies from Somerfield, which were worth it tbh as i phoned Innocent to ask if they were supposed to be carbonated (it was over 5 years ago and i'd never drunk a smoothie before!) and got sent a massive box of smoothies and juices!

Morrisons often sell fruit which is rotting/rotten for reduced rates then just shrug when you complain. IME anyway.

I would definitely write and complain about the ice cream. It is - as you say - basic food hygiene!

re-frozen lollies OT ice cream are notoriously dangerous and even worse as they are things that children love and eat a lot of. You did right to complain I would have been really strong and even write a letter tbh.
