Neighbour blocking drive way

Hockorydickerydock · 11/01/2026 10:49

Car has broken down and I have asked many occasions to get car moved

1 tow truck to garage
2 hand brake off and move it
3 contact landlord to sort this out

AIBU to wanting to use my drive way??
and it infuriating they basically look at me like I’m mad and I shouldn’t have access to my driveway

can I pay a tow person to remove the vehicle?

With the caveat that I am no artist - this is what I got from the photo where you can see the house with the red door. (I may have made some embellishments to the activities of people going about their business on the main road).

She's since said that the car isn't in front of the bush though, so it's a pointless photo! She just needs to give us a photo of what it actually looks like now!

ETA: brava on the drawing though! 🥇

Oh I missed that bit sorry. I thought they were contemporary photos - which would be the actual point wouldn't it?!

If I can take two minutes to draw a diagram..!

EDIT: Ah thanks! Doubt the Louvre will come knocking on my door, but I think I get a B+ for effort (and imagination)!

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 11/01/2026 17:08

It looks similar to a road near me, I suspect that there is no traditional dropped kerb as the pavement is at the same level as the road with it being a shared drive off a cul de sac.

@Hockorydickerydock you need to layout where the car is in terms of access to your drive because from the photos you should just be able to swing around it.

FunkyMonks · 11/01/2026 17:11

Sorry Op I think I accidentally click yabu instead of yanbu.
Get the vehicle towed and give the company their address for payment or call local council see if they can send a parking warden around.

Neighbour is blocking dropped kerb but it does seem to be communal shared drive way
every house has a driveway in the area so it must be a dropped kerb way

I don't understand this, every house has a driveway, but there is also a communal shared driveway, and you aren't sure if there is a lowered kerb on the pavement for everyone's individual private driveways?

No I don't understand.
If it's just OP's driveway then the dropped kerb surely just leads to that. If it's a dropped kerb leading to a driveway to access a communal parking area then that's a different issue.
A diagram would be helpful as the photos don't really explain, and I'm no clearer being able to follow.
If we can't understand, we can't advise OP.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think you can just “get a car towed”. If it was blocking her in her drive yes, the police would send a tow truck, but blocking her out of it? No.

A parking ticket might be the most realistic expectation here.

And not even then if it is private land. It's a purely civil matter then.

If you would like advice, you are going to need to provide a diagram. You could use @Arlanymor's excellent effort for inspiration.

Too kind, too kind!

(I have The Tate on hold currently asking if I'm interested in doing a 'next-level' parking exhibit in the Autumn... choices, choices! I thought I could incorporate diagrams of how poorly people park in multi-storeys... if that's not 'next-level' then I don't know what is frankly?! #postmodernparking)

@Arlanymor ·

You can come along to one of our Sainsburys ( yes there is a selection round here ) it's not my favourite Sainsbury as the shoppers get quite giddy with excitement at the prospect of shopping and frankly abandon their cars .
They don't care if they aren't anywhere near between the lines they seem to think not on the road bit is good enough Shock the turds

I know I’m missing the point, but are you even a Mnetter if you don’t know the law around parking threads and diagrams. Always, always provide a diagram. Thus it ever was, and even more so in the instance of your confusing drive/not drive/communal parking.

Diagram OP, or we’re all coming round to do some irritating parking in protest.

Excellent effort by @Arlanymor - I particularly like the whole ice-cream van / money additions Grin

@Hockorydickerydock you really need an excellent diagram (like Arlanymor's) or for the photo you upload to show what the actual issue is, as I don't think most of us can understand why your neighbour parking on the other side of the hedge is causing an issue.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 12/01/2026 19:12

Just block your neighbour back.

I loved the embellishments!!!! Really made me smile, especially the added description of events going on and enjoyment of said activities. ❤️

I'm packing my glitter biros as we speak!

Wholetthatgoatin · 12/01/2026 21:22

This parking thread failed on 2 counts:

  1. There is in fact no parking issue.
  2. OP did not produce obligatory diagram.

Back to MN school, op. You were actually the CF.

Is the drive on the right of yours belonging to the neighbour or someone else?

@Hockorydickerydock

It looks to me as if this is a 'parking area' for the property owners/tenants and you've added a driveway to your house. Now, I'm in the US so this may be really different than the UK, but here areas like that are not 'public streets' but considered 'private parking' and so not subject to normal parking rules. That car wouldn't be considered 'blocking a dropped kerb' because the law wouldn't apply as it's on private property.

I might sound foolish, but have you ever inquired about the 'status' of that bit of paved area? For someone to specifically park there when there were what looks like two other spaces, well, it looks like they're trying to 'tell you something'.

RealOliveTraybake · 03/02/2026 00:40

bignewprinz · 11/01/2026 13:10

I had this once. Fortunately the car was unlocked, so I went in, took the handbrake off, left in neutral and rolled it out the way. Actually I rolled it right the way down the road which must have confused the hell out of them when they came back, but hey ho.

Edited to add: if this is a modern automatic the above won't be possible.

Edited

And shouldn't be attempted in any car. You'll have little braking power in an emergency as the brake servo won't be operational, and you have no steering as the wheel is locked.
