To say that it is normal for families to play board games

Am I delusional to think that families do this? DH hates playing board or card games and this is influencing my DCs opinions. I’m not on about when children are little and it’s about learning rules and turn taking, I’m on about just as a pastime to do as a family activity.
it’s a lighthearted question but I’m intrigued as to how many of you out there play board and card games at home.

I grew up in a large family (5 children) and my dad worked long hours and my mum was solo parenting us all day every day on top of doing all household chores - so no we never played board games or really done anything as a family. But us siblings played a lot of games on the wii, which did include things like game of life and monopoly. We done lots of group games like Mario cart and Wii sports and just dance etc - which whilst were not board games, they were interactive and joint us together

TittyGajillions · 11/01/2026 13:54

I have friends who keep inviting me to join their board games clubs, I'd rather give myself a lobotomy with a rusty nail.

Panda89 · 11/01/2026 13:55

We love board games and regularly play them.
Our favourites for the family are:
Ticket to Ride
Exploding Kittens
Muffin Time
Boggle
Trivial Pursuit
Magic Maze
Calico

Me and DH play:
Pandemic
Undaunted (we completed Normandy and working currently on stalingrad)
Sky Team
Lord of the Rings duel

We also have board game sessions with or friends pretty regularly (same group we play D&D with)

Ahem!

DH & I...

I wouldn't usually be such a dickhead pedant, but if you enjoy games, such things are probably important.

Panda89 · 11/01/2026 14:03

We also go to a board game cafe in Bath reasonably often - it’s great fun and the staff are fab for recommendations.

Wow not really relevant to the conversation, way to make me feel like trash. Not sure how this is relevant to enjoying games.

It's not remotely relevant, ignore them.

staringatthesun · 11/01/2026 14:07

My kids are adults now, but we all still love a boardgame when we all get together.

8misskitty8 · 11/01/2026 14:07

We've got a cupboard full. We play them.at weekends with our now adult children.

ElegantFowl · 11/01/2026 14:08

Our kids are grown, but if everyone is home, we love playing games. Not monopoly or that ilk although we did play that sort of thing when they were little.

We love Articulate, Pictionary, Linkee or anything music based.

Oh no!

Apologies, it was a joke!!

Didn't land well obviously.

Sorry.

Jellyslothbridge · 11/01/2026 14:32

We play boardgames as a family with young adults when they visit. I am probably the least keen. I like a game with nice props e.g dread pirate has real treasure and great for younger children. Ticket to ride and collaborative games like pandemic are good for those who don't like to loose.

deplorabelle · 11/01/2026 14:32

I love the idea of board games hugely but it has to be absolutely the right game because my mind doesn't work in a particularly spatial way and I have a bit of a blind spot for rules that is probably to do with having no sense of direction and a poor memory for the order and sequence of things.

When I find a game I can actually play, I love it a lot. DS2 is the same but even more specialised in his tastes. He likes social guessing games like Apples to Apples (I think this is a clean, kids version of Cards Against Humanity).

I like games with good, interesting theming (eg Castles of Mad King Ludwig, Sagrada, Ticket to Ride). We are playing a lot of a card game called cucumber at the moment which is simple enough that I enjoy the strategy (as does DS2)

My favourite game we've played in our family is an extremely niche "board" game which is designed by the YouTube channel Jet Lag: the Game. It's a board game but on a very large scale - ie the game is a real life hide and seek game played on public transport and the board is the size of a city or even a country. Now our kids are older we've played this several times. It's not really DS2's cup of tea but he enjoys the bigger games so long as there are food breaks and good company

I mean, that's fine.

BUT there is a game for everyone.

There's party games, strategic games, really fucking boring games that go on forever (Risk).

I can't believe that there's not a game you wouldn't enjoy.

Nope. I hate the concept and have never enjoyed playing any game. I don’t even do candy crush. I’m a doodler, a reader and a baker. That’s what I do for fun. Games yikes no.

KarmenPQZ · 11/01/2026 14:46

Very normal in our house but please tell me it’s normal that 7 year olds can’t take losing or even one bad roll will send him over the edge into tears. It’s so frustrating and I’m sure at 7 I got the hang of the ‘you can’t win every roll’ issue. Even the 10 year old is prone to occasional theatrics if younger get a good thro this she has improved a lot recently. It can be so tedious and I wonder if it’s worth it.

KarmenPQZ · 11/01/2026 14:47

Ps @BootMaker my 7 year old loves risk and it really don’t go on longer than other games. He’d take risk over snakes and ladders any day

SchnizelVonKrumm · 11/01/2026 08:12

If you think you hate board games then it may be because of playing Monopoly! I can't understand it's enduring popularity - it's such a boring game! There are so many brilliant games out there (which you are welcome still to hate, of course! Grin)

This! We are a very ND family. Kids partners are also ND. We play board games a lot. But OMFG! Monopoly, unofficial son in law who has lived in our house for more than 7 years. I would never have guessed he could be such a PITA playing that game. We played it once this Christmas and I declared I am never playing it again with him!

FamingolosForDays · 11/01/2026 14:55

I don't ever remember playing them very much as a child with my family apart from rare monopoly or scrabble.

DS loves playing a game as it means he interacts with people (SEN and thats hard for him) so I am trying to build it into our every day routine. DD does join in and its a way to get her off her phone (and DS away from the telly) but v rarely will play with DS if I'm not also playing. But normally its reserved for holidays, weekends etc.

We got some good games over Christmas- chicken vs hotdog, traitors, iterations of Uno (just opened Uno Extreme which is hilarious!). Nothing holds my attention for long (like monopoly) so I like a fairly quick game. Or if we play it we take lots of breaks etc. Scrabble is good for learning words but god it takes too long!

Thechaseison71 · 11/01/2026 14:58

My DDs constantly argued and fought over board games so gave up playing them. Really not enjoyable

sittingonabeach · 11/01/2026 15:48

@KarmenPQZ DH used to play Risk with uni friends, could take hours! We got Star Wars version when DS was younger, much quicker version

Games people will never accept that you don't like the whole concept. "Ooh, you just haven't found one you like!"

Like you, I don't like board games. Waste of time. Boring. Either stupid/random/pointless or absurdly complex/tactical.

Pastimes for people who can't make good conversation.

Erm, no need for that!

I'm an excellent conversationalist.

I am from a family where playing board games were definitely not a thing. The thing is my mum would buy them as gifts for us but I can’t recall us every playing them, I’d play some on my own if possible 😂

as an adult I find board games boring but I try and grin and bear it for my kids. Ds isn’t interested either but I will have an occasional game with dd

however, my in laws are crazy for it. On New Year’s Day I really wanted to get home but had to wait until OH had finished the game (we’d been there for hours at that point!). I went and sat in a room on my own saying I felt dizzy, which tbh was true.

Hillarious · 11/01/2026 17:04

As a family, and now with children’s partners, we enjoy card and board games. Along with a good book, it’s so easy to pack cards or Pass the Pigs.

Finally, at new year, we learnt how to play Risk with my youngest and his partner. I’d bought it when the kids were younger from a jumble sale. Anyway, as a result of playing Risk, I knew exactly where Venezuela was when events unfolded last week.

fmb8132 · 11/01/2026 18:36

We regularly play cards as a family. I love this time with them 😃
