Neighbours unpleasant vehicle

pimplebum · 10/01/2026 22:23

Inspired by another thread , my neighbour is spoiling my view and bringing down the neighbourhood !😁.

My neighbour two doors down has parked an old ambulance ) which he plans on restoring)
directly opposite

it really spoils my nice view from my window and is a bit jarring every time I open the curtains or when I walk home I occasionally have a mild panic when it looks like there is an ambulance outside my home . Apart from my view and emotional reaction to seeing an ambulance ( past trauma family member killed )

I have asked him nicely to move it as it spoils my view ( I didn’t want to go into other reasons ). But it is still there

it could be moved to the side road or to another home he has recently inherited.

I am not going to do anything unpleasant like slash his tires or be aggressive

am I being unreasonable to ask him to move it again? should I suck it up and get over myself ? or ask his wife as I have nice rapport with her ( which our conversation could ruin)

it disproportionately upsets me but I have already asked him once
what would you do ?

no it would in no way block anything / anyone at all for him to park it there

possible higher risk of break in but as it’s not a high performance vehicle with a catolicic converter I’d say the risk of break in is low

He could also park it in the drive of his MIL house he has recently inherited which is nearby

All vehicles for years have had catalytic converters

Have you checked teh Tax & MoT because if it isnt then the action can be taken and it wont be much fun for the owner

pimplebum · 10/01/2026 23:48

vipersnest1 · 10/01/2026 23:32

Some years back the people living across the street from me had a hearse (unusually painted metallic silver) outside for a while……
No, I didn’t ask them to move it.

but that’s different as it was ( I presume) opposite you as it was on their driveway or outside their house , this is outside my house but he lives two doors down plus I have a reaction to it and you ( presumably) did not have an unpleasant reaction to seeing it every day ?

I do appreciate I have no right at all to ask him to move it I just assumed that he would as I said it was blocking my nice view - I would

It’s parked on his property, isn’t it?

Ignore that- I’ve just realised it isn’t.

You sound like Hyacinth 'Bouquet'. At least it's not a rusty old ford cortina and he doesn't have an old sofa parked outside Onslow style.

I think I am ! 😩 I really hate the sight of the ugly thing
seems like I am in the minority and everyone would just ignore it and suck it up
well you don’t know until you ask I suppose

i love this site , where else can you get honest opinions about shite that bothers you , if I asked my friends or peps at work they’d just agree with me

I don't see how moving it 4 meters would stop you getting a shock every time you saw the ambulance you know is parked outside of your house anyway....

ElizabethsTailor · 11/01/2026 00:01

It’s understandable that it annoys you. He is being very inconsiderate. He could move it, which would be no inconvenience to him but would make things better for you.

Invite him round for a cuppa, and set up chairs for you both looking out at your previously nice view.

angel1977 · 11/01/2026 00:11

Don't be such a doormat FGS!
Chap is door and tell him he is moving it away from your sodding house. You are sick looking at a bloody ambulance from your front window, its his it can sit outside HIS house if he likes it so much.
Ask for the key and tell him you'll move it yourself if he is incapable.
I did this this with neighbours work van parked infront of mine instead of on his empty driveway. And I did tell him he would be needing a lot of new tyres if he didn't flammin shift it. Never seen it again.
People will do what they think they can get away with. Dont let them.
Another neighbour installed a fancy strip light all along their driveway, it came on everytime an animal went near it and it shown through my closed curtains and blinds it was so bright. Lasted 1 night before I informed him that would not be happening again, now its never on.
Don't put up with his crap.

As I walk up the road it looks as if an ambulance is waiting right outside my house as I think one of my family is dead due to previous experience ( yes it’s daft but for a split second every time my body reacts )

if it were parked where I suggested it would be to the side in a line of parked vehicles and out of my view and bit more disguised from view and would not cause the same feeling I think

It’s not parked outside HIS house it’s parked opposite mine ( as I said he is two doors down ) he could park it 4 metres to the right which is a side bit next to bushes which is not near anyone’s house and I get my view back

I'd check with the council.

Some don't allow caravans so this could be similar

If you have an irrational reaction to the vehicle being seen (which is what you are having), moving it just a little down from the house won't change that

PullUpYourBigGirlPants · 11/01/2026 00:16

I have this very problem with a bright yellow little shed on wheels. I dont open my blinds when its parked there for days. It is hideous! Go park outside your own window!

If it is not roadworthy, the owner might have registered a Statutory Off Road Notification instead. No tax or MOT is required for that vehicle status.

Grawlix · 11/01/2026 00:30

I can understand that it’s distressing to you @pimplebum but if the vehicle's roadworthy and taxed I don’t think there’s an awful lot you can do except try asking politely for him to move it slightly. He could be more considerate.

FWIW I once lived in a road with a severe lack of parking spaces (terraced houses so you could park one car in front of every house; we were the exception in having only one car and some people had three). A neighbour acquired an old - and I mean old as in a 1940s/50s - car and parked it outside his house. It literally never moved and I think he removed the tyres so it couldn’t anyway. People got so frustrated by this space being permanently blocked and this old heap of rust being there that it must have been reported constantly - the reply came back that he was 'planning to restore it'. But it was baffling because it was on the public road, immovable, but must have been SORNed….there was no way it could have passed an MOT.

Just saw the comment above mine, btw, while I was typing - if a vehicle has a SORN it can’t be parked on the road, only on private land.

pimplebum · 11/01/2026 00:40

He’s my neighbour and ( apart from this ) a good neighbour ie tucks my bin back in if I am away - I ask them to park one of their
( smaller ) cars in my driveway when we are away so I am not going to grass him up ( I think it’s all kosher anyway ) nor am I going to threaten to slash his tires as someone suggested

its my issue I am going to have to get used to it

I’m with you OP other peoples vehicles piss me off, massive motor homes, caravans, speedboats, boats, commercial vans, so many cars that residential roads and streets just look like massive car parks, I don’t care if I’m being unreasonable, it all makes all residential areas look dreadful and depressing.

Friendlygingercat · 11/01/2026 01:02

A scattering of wild bird seen done under cover of darkness will encourage the birds to feed at first light and crap all over it. An act of god so no one to blame. They may find somewhere else for it when they get tired of cleaning off the crap.

Completely agree. I wish only cars could be parked.

Thete was someone near me that had an old school bus for weddings. Took up half the road.

Wrong you cannot park an articulated lorry in a residential road

You generally cannot park on a residential street in the UK, especially if it requires an Operator's Licence, as it's usually considered an illegal operating centre and can lead to fines or action from the Traffic Commissioner, though occasional, short-term parking without obstruction might be tolerated if signs permit and local rules aren't breached. Rules depend on local councils and the lorry's operational status, but it often creates noise, safety, and access issues, making it a neighbour complaint magnet.
Key Factors & Rules:

  • Operator's Licence (O-Licence): If the lorry has one (look for a disc), it must park at an approved operating centre, not a residential street, to avoid licence action.
  • Weight: Vehicles over 7.5 tonnes face stricter rules; parking on pavements/verges is illegal unless permitted by police for emergencies.
  • Obstruction: Blocking driveways, pavements, or making access difficult (especially for emergency vehicles) is illegal.
  • Local Councils: They manage parking and can enforce restrictions, sometimes even banning HGVs over a certain weight from specific streets.
  • Noise & Safety: Large lorries cause noise and visibility issues, which are valid reasons for complaints and potential enforcement

Not for commercial use, no operator license required, you're only limited by any other local rules i.e title deed restrictions

coconutchocolatecream · 11/01/2026 01:57

I'd really dislike seeing an ambulance right outside my window every day, too, OP, but I probably wouldn't ask again. If I did, I'd open up a bit more about why it bothers you. They may be more sympathetic if they know you're asking because it brings up painful memories, rather than just making a generic 'ugly view' complaint.
