I never have a problem using the actual card in a shop.

LIZS · 10/01/2026 14:03

I think the issue is more how the value can depreciate over time. Like many giftcards they may not be worth face value by the time you get to use it but at least you have an alternative if a retailer goes bust

Zov · 10/01/2026 14:06

Never heard of them.

NerrSnerr · 10/01/2026 14:09

My children get them every birthday and Christmas and we’ve never had a problem spending them.

Icouldwriteabookonmydisastrouslife · 10/01/2026 14:14

If you don’t spend them they take something off them every few weeks . I used to work in retail I can’t remember how much I think it’s about 45p every so often . They don’t always work either , and if you use them on some websites you can’t use them unless you have the whole balance on it and it’s such a faff. You’re best off getting a shopping centre one if you’re close to a shopping mall . They cause so many problems at the till .

ColdBlueSky · 10/01/2026 14:16

I have them.
Have registered them on the website and added them to my apple wallet.
Spent £235 in M&S this morning with no problems.

VillaOfReducedCircumstances · 10/01/2026 14:18

These are awful - my heart used to sink if DS got one for a birthday or Christmas present.

They can be really difficult to use, and they depreciate over time. They must make a fortune from people giving up and not bothering to spend them.

They have a TrustPilot rating of 2.1 out of 5 from 6,150 reviews.

ByKindOpalPoet · 10/01/2026 14:18

Never had an issue with them. In fact we used one earlier and it was absolutely fine

C0rner · 10/01/2026 14:20

I agree. Such a hassle. Take money off after a while and no one at a till knows how to use them so always have to get somebody else to put it through. Tried most recently at M&S and it wouldn't work. Would never buy them.

brightnails · 10/01/2026 14:54

agree. given up every time. what @VillaOfReducedCircumstancessays

Aparecium · 10/01/2026 15:10

I agree. I have been given them as thankyou gifts after volunteering, and have never been able to spend them. I feel gutted at the waste of the givers' money.

2026NewTricks · 10/01/2026 15:25

Agreed. Last time I tried to redeem one was in M&S and it was a bloody faff. Took an age, reliant on signal and felt like I needed a degree to understand how to redeem.

CeeJay81 · 10/01/2026 15:34

I agree. I was going to use mine online but accidentally scratched off the code by mistake! Nmso I thought argos, but can't reserve in advance or maybe you can still reserve for 48 hours and pay when there?. Live rurally, so it's quite a journey if they haven't got what I want in stock.

Bess91 · 10/01/2026 15:36

I remember trying to spend one years ago in Matalan and the staff member needed to know EXACTLY how much was on the card because there was no way for them to see. All a bit bizarre.

Iloveeverycat · 10/01/2026 15:36

They must have changed the the ones I used to use you just used them like a gift card in store didn't even need to be registered.
They make The every wish card difficult too. Bought a couple for DDs I thought it was a normal gift card but has to be registered then you have to choose which shop and how much you want to pay in that shop then they send and email with the voucher. Not very good when just out shopping and not knowing what you want to buy. Won't be getting them again

Itsrainingatlast · 10/01/2026 15:38

Absolutely agree. My son was given one for his birthday - he managed to work it out but such a faff!

Dustybuns · 10/01/2026 17:19

Agree we had to waste one because I tried so many time to spend it and there was always an issue. I’d never buy one as a gift

Nugg · 10/01/2026 17:25

Oh shit, I think I got my daughter’s 50 quid each on these as part of their Christmas present. I will message them and get them to have a look.

Marylou2 · 10/01/2026 17:29

They're dreadful. We used to get them as small incentives for activities at work. Could never work out how to use them.

Hammy19 · 10/01/2026 17:31

I hate when people 'ask me not to do something'

Warn me about something, sure, don't 'ask' me not to do something

I'm an adult and capable of making decisions by myself

No idea why this riles me up so badly but every time I see it, I get mad

Why ‘oh shit’? They can just go to a shop and spend them 🤷‍♀️

Nugg · 10/01/2026 17:42

No because it sounds like a right royal pain to use them. I just messaged them on one of them has already said it looks like I can only use it online which is bizarre because it’s a physical gift card.

Coconutter24 · 10/01/2026 17:43

I had one last year for £100, I went into tkmaxx and spent £120 so I gave the cashier the gift voucher then used my debit card for the remaining £20. I’m not sure what the drama is.

Well, we are going shopping tomorrow Me and one of my daughters so I will tell her to bring it and have a go thank you for that. It is reassuring.
