AIBU to be anxious about the situation with Greenland?

Just that really.

A few years ago I wouldn't have even considered the concept of America trying to forcefully take a territory which is part of a friendly, peaceful country and fellow Nato member. Now though Trump seems so mad I'm worried it could actually happen.

Surely if it did happen America would be expelled from Nato and ourselves (UK) and other Nato countries would have defend Greenland from a US invasion, and a major international conflict would be triggered.

I can't work out anymore if I'm just being alarmist and have watched too much news, or if this is an actual possibility we should all be worried about.

YABU - This is never going to happen in reality. The news is just scare-mongering.

YANBU - Trump is mad enough to actually attempt this and risk major international conflict.

If America makes a move for Greenland, the UK will help them, even if the rest of Europe stands against it. Just like we did with the theft of a Russian oil tanker. No thoughts to how unsafe it makes us, just focused on being the US’s lapdog

Surely that would be the final nail in Starmer's coffin. Very few people in the UK would support that.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 10/01/2026 15:42

YANBU, he and his people are fucking mental and all of the checks and balances appear to be gone. All bets are off, geopolitically. However, there is very little we can do, other than use our vote wisely and vote against anyone who supports that regime and will push the world further into chaos and uncertainty, when we get an opportunity.

Liftedmeup · 10/01/2026 15:42

Yes, I think it’s possible, even likely that he will make an attempt. I would strongly hope that most people in the UK would stand with Denmark.

There is a bit of a difference between helping apprehend a sanctions-busting ship, and assisting what would be an illegal military attack on a fellow NATO member.

Starmer is supine and wishy-washy, but I doubt he'd be willing to essentially plunge the UK into a non-shooting war with it's former NATO allies, because that's almost certainly what would happen to the USA if Trump decides to seize Greenland using military force.

The EU has pretty much said that would result in the repudiation of US basing rights, the denial of port facilities to US ships etc, and while I wouldn't expect the UK to go that far and act in lockstep with the EU, I also think it highly improbable Starmer would be willing to subject the UK to exactly the same strictures by aiding the US in an illegal misadventure in Greenland.

redbottleblue · 10/01/2026 15:52

If America doesn't take Greenland then someone else will (I believe China want it too). I get it's a nice idea that Greenland is for the Greenlanders, but the world is volatile right now and America needs to bolster up it's defences, particularly as the entire Western world is relying on America to save us from anyone else. We can't expect America to help us with their hands tied behind their backs. If we wanted more of a say on it then we should've been sorting out own national defences for the past few decades rather than rely on America

As they say, only the good die young. There are loads of ancient billionaire wankers with access to the best medical care money can buy.

I do thank Trump for proving the non-existence of karma.

I also hope this about Putin too but he could live for another 20 years

Have you watched the interviews with prominent people from Greenland? It's got the highest suicide rate. There's mass poverty, no hope and no investment. They consider themselves forgotten. Not everyone is against being part of the US.

Brightlittlecanary · 10/01/2026 15:59

American wants Greenland to protect American air space, so if Putin attacks they need to be in Greenland to detect them and destroy any missiles.

as much as I also abhor trump , and don’t agree with the bully boy tactics on this, this is not about trump and a legacy or trump expanding his empire. This is about if Russia attacks.

there are other reasons like oil and transport routes, and Denmark has offered rhe us further military presence to protect themselves, but the USA doesn’t feel Denmark has the capability to hold Putin off, so they want Greenland so they can. That’s the primary reason.

its about war.

Whatado · 10/01/2026 14:56

I disagree. In fact the messaging seems to be changing as I have seen two interviews this morning saying if he makes a miltary move Europe will take away all American European bases and they will be expelled from Nato.

Making me think actually EU leaders think he is enough of a narrasisst he will do it.

Because Maga have now completely shred any pretence of being anything other than what they are. History really does repeat its self. It will take generations to repair the damage this administration has and is causing.

None of that is a full scale war. It's just political posturing at the moment, and your outcome is less cooperation with the US in Europe. That's not something that needs to keep the OP awake worrying.

The real story is oil, both in Greenland and in Venezuela. As the Arctic ice melts (thanks in no small part to Trumps determination to ignore green issues) oil and other mineral extraction becomes feasible, and he wants it. Russia is a factor but he can already put as many troops as he wants there. He needs to own it to get the resources. He's the real life personification of a Bond villain, seeking world domination.

Except he's more like Dr Evil.

Trump is an asshole but quite honestly it’s the people behind him pulling the strings. He’s not standing up there alone saying this….hes got a whole load of equal scumbags enabling him,

I disagree- those behind him are following his nonsense

RudolphRNR · 10/01/2026 16:04

I truly believe we are headed for WW3.
Trump will go for Greenland. NATO is destroyed. Willing European countries come to Greenland’s defence. Meanwhile, Putin takes more of Europe while European attention and resource is divided. Trump does absolutely nothing to defend Europe.
China sits back watching the destruction, biding their time to pick whatever they want at the end.

EspanaPorfavor · 10/01/2026 16:04

I’m worried too OP. I honestly think he will do it. He’s as despotic as Putin. And despite NATO nobody will stop him because we can’t. And then where does it stop.

LeonMccogh · 10/01/2026 16:09

Some Brits would be absolutely gagging to be controlled by Trump.

MotherJessAndKittens · 10/01/2026 16:09

I think he’s nuts and has delusions of grandeur ! Had to look at atlas to ascertain where is closest to Greenland and it’s actually Canada not US. Nowhere near Denmark BTW. Remember when Biden started to show signs of aging. Perhaps Trump is going the same way or wants to go out with a bang?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/01/2026 16:11

All those saying he’s old and won’t last much longer….

Enter Vance🫣😵🥴

FalseSpring · 10/01/2026 16:13

Trump is a bully and is just threatening to get his own way. Look at what he did with trade tariffs - he backed down on many of them. 7th November 2028 can't come soon enough!

LoisGriffinskitchen · 10/01/2026 16:14

Trump almost certainly has fronto-temporal dementia. He shows all the signs of it. He’s also a raging narcissist and paedophile.

However nobody is going against him so I guess we just have to pray for that fatal heart attack, I never thought I’d think or say that about anyone yet here we are.

What's that got to do with whether people in the UK would support a US invasion?

Stompythedinosaur · 10/01/2026 16:16

Yes I think it could happen, but I think the chance of us opposing the USA are (sadly) very small. What's far more likely (and worrying) is the breakdown of NATO, and the world just becoming a much scarier, less safe place.

I really feel we are living in unprecedented times.

Could you link to some of these? I've seen a number of interviews and never seen any Greenlander support the idea of joining the USA. I think there's overwhelming opposition there. They largely want independence.

Andthatrightsoon · 10/01/2026 16:19

The news is manipulative.
Headline: 'Denmark buys 21 Hellfire missiles'
Inference: Denmark is preparing to defend its territories from an agressive US.
Reality: Denmark bought the missiles from the US.

TheDoubleDeuce · 10/01/2026 16:19

@IndigoIsMyFavouriteColourNasty old Trump seizing the.Oil from the friendly Russians. How are they supposed to fund their war against Ukraine if he keeps interfering.

Overtheatlantic · 10/01/2026 13:51

He will do something without a doubt. And I hope his recent actions will lose the midterm elections for the Republicans. Whatever happens in Greenland will be rolled back when the Democrats are next in power.

Trust me Democrats will not roll it back. The US has been trying to buy or take over Greenland for over 100 years starting with Harry Truman who offered $100m and it has been long running US foreign policy to try to take it over but obviously past presidents have not been as vocal as Trump.

I don't see any military invasion, it's just rhetoric to put pressure on them to make a deal. I do think a deal will be made, either an agreement to sell it to the US because the Danish ownership is also complicated and has its issues, or a cooperation agreement where the US can put more military presence there which to be fair will also protect Europe because it is a weak spot to Russia and China.

And the US and Denmark have had past deals with the sale of the US Virgin Islands so this wouldn't be the first time.

@KitKat1985 calm down.

Surely I can’t be the only one secretly wishing that bullet had been a few mm to the side? 😱 (I hate myself for thinking it but can’t help it) No chance of an Esta for me now!
