Things now, that 90's kid would have mocked?

This is light hearted. Working in a school it is interesting to see how trends change. Sure some of this is regional, but what things do kids do now that just wasn't the done thing in the nineties?
I have noticed

  1. Double strappers. This was so uncool at the time. I am sure I still get shoulder pain now from carrying mountains of books on one shoulder. Single strap now is a bad thing. ( Good!)

  2. The star spot patches. Some kids wear about 6. Not seen any adults do this yet.

  3. Boys with massive brushes in their pockets which they whip out and swish their fringe. They even borrow each others and swish each others fringe. It is actually quite cute. My mind chuckles when I think of the 90s boys spiking their hair with pointy hair gel. But absolutely no to carrying a brush about.

  4. Water bottles. I once got in trouble for taking a drink from my water in 1998 in a lecture. In 1991 it just wouldn't have been a thing to have a watsr bottle.

I am sure there is more. AIBU to think most new trends are probably better but to miss the 90s nostalgia.

Kids of today would rip us for backing our books in wrapping paper.

The two i notice amongst the 13 year olds are elaborate skincare routines and perfect make up - these kids are immaculate. Oh and also gym routines- like properly going to the gym and working out, not just pissing about

It wasn’t one of the cool brands.

It was everywhere

I like the way there is more freedom for the "alternatives" (as we would once have called ourselves) to express ourselves more individually. The 90s was more conformist and fixed in its tribal subcultures

Ah see I was going to say the opposite!

In my school in the 90s there was a much wider range of looks and tastes than there seems to be among my DD’s friends who all look like little Subdued and Hollister clad clones. I blame social media /whatsapp channels.

I agree with the white socks pulled up thing. Especially white socks with sliders!! Cannot get over this.

I like to think we would have mocked the obsession with skincare, selfies and “get ready with me” videos. All so DULL and a wee bit narcissistic.

I was going to say this.
Except for the socks over leggings. I am grateful for the Gen Z. At the gym, it's much more comfortable. The hidden socks often dropped down into my trainers and rubbed (even the expensive branded one), plus I don't have that cold gap. I first saw it on my Millennial instructor, and now nearly all of us from mid thirties to late forties do it. It maybe looked weird at first, but just like jeans, it doesn't now. For me, at least.

Mainly the ego in kids.

Taking pictures of yourselves all the time, pouting?? You'd have had the shit beaten out of you basically

canuckup · 12/01/2026 02:19

Wearing North face slippers outside

MidnightMeltdown · 12/01/2026 03:23

Internet dating. I suppose the 90s equivalent would have been the lonely hearts column in a newspaper! 😆

Wearing leggings with a short top (not covering bum and vaginal area) back in the day was definitely seriously frowned upon. It was quite shocking to see and also seen as, both unattractive and unfashionable. As a PP said wearers would be considered to be half dressed. Could really do with it being the same nowadays!

Yeah, big bums weren’t fashionable in the 90s. We were always trying to hide the bum!

scalt · 12/01/2026 05:41

Remember how in the late 90s, backless trainers were popular, and usually without socks? I haven’t seen many recently. Crocs and uggs yes, but not trainers.

Also, did 90’s teens ever wear sandals in summer?

Haha what region are you in?

My friend laughs at me as we called the game chase. Tiggy. He called it Tag.

I like the regional names.

We have plazzy bags here. Just outside Liverpool.

Whilst acceptance of different things is positive, don't you think that is why many young people are trying to label themselves in other ways now e.g. trans, non binary, gender fluid etc.
Young people have wanted to belong to subcultures for generations mods/rockers; alternative/indie/grungers whatever. Now, you can be what you want with acceptance but many young people still need that sense of exploring their identity and going against the mainstream so more and more variations have been developed. Even the fact that you can't rebel with the length of your tie because it's clip on is limiting people's ability to express themselves so they have to develop new ways! Not sure how true this is, I'm not a sociologist in any way but that's my theory!

LydiaFunnyGums · 12/01/2026 06:47

Bum enhancing leggings that are designed to show off the glutes.

Paramedia · 12/01/2026 06:54

Being brunette. Not sure if this was just where I lived in the suburbs. My dad is Mediterranean. It was considered common knowledge that the prettiest girls in school were always the blondes, regardless of whether they actually were. Being blonde was the ultimate goal so those of us that would never have achieved it were relegated to being the best friend in films, or the sort of exotic one/ temptress, but never the main role.
I love it now that Zendaya and little Latina Wednesday Adam’s are considered the most admired stars, and beauty is less Eurocentric.

Plun · 12/01/2026 07:23

Listening to old music. The Beatles were fine as they had their Anthology series and CDs in 1995.
I got teased for listening to Led Zeppelin.

Now no one cares

Maaate · 12/01/2026 07:40

Skinny fit trousers with jack up hems - especially with white or no socks and slip on shoes.

Total social suicide

SpringIsComingSoonFolks · 12/01/2026 08:11

Omg the huge thick caterpillar eyebrows of today would be laughed out of TOWN!

We’d all plucked our brows to look like Annalise from Neighbours .

If I wore new balance trainers in the 90s, I would have been mocked so much they would have been unwearable.

To be fair to NB, they have done some fantastic marketing in the last 10 years or so. They used to be the preserve of gnarly climbers and fell runners and very serious athletes. I remember going to the bleak, windswept factory shop on the West Cumbria coast, with boyfriend of the description in the mid 1990s. No leopard print highlights in those days!!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 12/01/2026 09:02

Skinny jeans of any sort, unless a Skinhead, worn with very tall DMs.

This got me thinking. I went to Australia for a year in the late 90s and I cannot for the life of me remember what I wore on my feet. I'll have to have a look through old photos, not sure I did wear sandals, maybe just flip flops.

My niece happily wear white ankle socks pulled up with trainers or (and my inner 80’s child cringes so hard at this one) socks with sliders/sandals!!!! White socks were so deeply uncool when I was a teen, we did everything we could to hide their existence 😆

I was at our local pub for lunch on Saturday and there was a young girl (16/17 at a guess) wearing leggings with white spots socks pulled up over her leggings and open back fluffy shoes which I would assume were slippers. She looked ridiculous to my late 40’s eyes 😂

TallulahBetty · 12/01/2026 09:44

They way kids accept differences now. Gay, bi, trans, furries, two dads, two mums, disabilities, learning difficulties, glasses, braces.... kids don't bat eyelids.

AlliWantIsARoomSomewheeeere · 12/01/2026 10:00

Socks and sliders....in fact just being able to see socks at all..under too short trousers (imagine jack ups became trendy a few years ago! 🤯) white socks with black shoes and trousers. Have they ever worn trainers socks I wonder?

Leggins where you can see your crotch! leggings were for long tops/short skirts

I teach teenagers and have to resist the urge so much, to tell them the spot stickers look ridiculous and draw more attention to what they are trying to hide! 🙈

I feel batting an eyelid at a furry isn’t only normal, it’s optimal

Furry slipper type things, UGG boots etc, were all associated with grannies. No one under 60 would have been seen dead in them, now they are everywhere.

And shopping trolleys! I see loads of 20 something's using them

ByWarmShark · 12/01/2026 10:28

D&D being cool.
