Things now, that 90's kid would have mocked?

This is light hearted. Working in a school it is interesting to see how trends change. Sure some of this is regional, but what things do kids do now that just wasn't the done thing in the nineties?
I have noticed

  1. Double strappers. This was so uncool at the time. I am sure I still get shoulder pain now from carrying mountains of books on one shoulder. Single strap now is a bad thing. ( Good!)

  2. The star spot patches. Some kids wear about 6. Not seen any adults do this yet.

  3. Boys with massive brushes in their pockets which they whip out and swish their fringe. They even borrow each others and swish each others fringe. It is actually quite cute. My mind chuckles when I think of the 90s boys spiking their hair with pointy hair gel. But absolutely no to carrying a brush about.

  4. Water bottles. I once got in trouble for taking a drink from my water in 1998 in a lecture. In 1991 it just wouldn't have been a thing to have a watsr bottle.

I am sure there is more. AIBU to think most new trends are probably better but to miss the 90s nostalgia.

Kids of today would rip us for backing our books in wrapping paper.

Sshh, I thought it was your dd’s spelling!

Shucks, missed a trick there!

My 13 year old boy told me how most of the boys take hair brushes into school and brush their hair..really tickled me it did! My son spends an enormous amount of of time brushing his own hair on the bathroom at home.

The whole carrying a hairbrush, too short trousers and white socks thing is a bit Grease isn't it? I wonder if these kids know they are channeling John Travolta.

If I wore new balance trainers in the 90s, I would have been mocked so much they would have been unwearable.

Ha ha so did I, but mine were bright orange (the colour of a netball) and I was mocked anyway

Cosyreader1 · 11/01/2026 19:34

I know its already been mentioned but my god the new balance thing! You wouldn't have been caught dead wearing them back then...I couldn't wrap my head around it when suddenly they became such an in thing and I still cant bring myself to buy them!

PonkyPonky · 11/01/2026 19:41

Doing your laces up. Wouldn’t have been seen dead with my laces properly done up in the 90’s, they had to be tucked. Nowadays people seem to appreciate the purpose of laces and how much more supportive a shoe can be if they’re done up properly!

How is it strange? If I think all boys and men are ugly, that's my perception and it's equally valid to everyone else's perception. That's why I cringe whenever I see boys or men who think they are attractive.

If you disagree with me, what % of men would you think are attractive?

It's difficult to put a % on it because it depends what you mean by ugly/attractive. If you're asking about what I find attractive then that's entirely subjective and based on what I personally find aesthetically pleasing. That would be a much lower % than the % of men and boys that I would assess as attractive but would not personally be interested in (especially boys and young men because that would be wrong). There's also the % of men whose attractiveness as a person has nothing to do with appearance but is related to other important qualities such as kindness.
Finally, you mention men and boys who find themselves attractive. Is that the issue? Is it the degree of narcissism that you can get with some people who know they're attractive and use it? I'm with you on that but not all attractive people are like that though.
I find it odd that you can dismiss half the species in such a way. I'm not attracted to women but I can still look at a woman and think that she's attractive; whether or not she's a nice human is a different matter.

screamtoabloodysigh · 11/01/2026 19:43

White socks above trainers
Socks pulled up to your knee for school
Ribbons in your hair. Anything overly twee or girly, to be fair.
Unbranded clothes (my life was made hell because of this)
A coat
Tight clothes
Eyebrows
Blusher
Going to the gym. Who went to the gym?
Listening to the same music as your parents.
Boyfriends the same age. I think that's the biggest difference now and I think part of that is driven by all the American stuff they see. We're watching a series where a bloke in his 30s is about to have a thing with a 19 yr old. 16yr old ds thought that would have meant the bloke being done. I was like, mate, let me tell you about the people who used to go on Jeremy Kyle.....

I didn't tell him about the 32 yr old i used to shag as an 18 yr old. 😄

Ha ha, yes! I still can't get used to tying laces and leaving them on show for all. But my ankles are very pleased.

It is mind boggling for them. It is hard to imagine myself. Imagine not having a phone. It really was another lifetime.

I've still only got a phone that plugs into the wall and I'm 46, the phone in question was new in 1987 purchased by my parents, it's still my one and only!

I'm not crazy about computers either, obviously I've got one, on it now, but still use the good old typewriter for invoices etc, find it quicker, no need to switch on, paper in and away you go!

So true! My daughters spotify wrap had her age as in her 50's. It is cool to like our music. Well within reason.

My 30 yo son and I went to an Eagles concert and, at a pre concert dinner, someone said he was far too young to know the Eagles. He just said he’d had a good musical education 😁 And that gig was in my all time top 5!

DrCoconut · 11/01/2026 20:20

My DS wears primark, poundland etc clothes quite happily. Trainers from shoezone. I went to the same school as him in the 80s/90s and brands were everything. You were mercilessly mocked and socially excluded for having the "wrong" clothes, which I usually did as my mum was (a) on her own with us and couldn't afford high fashion and (b) wouldn't let me have most of it because she thought it looked ridiculous. I sometimes wonder if she used (b) a bit to try and downplay (a) though, she was often made to feel ashamed of being poor.

shuggles · 11/01/2026 20:33

@Fgfgfg You're arguing with me, even though what you have written suggests that you aren't attracted to most men. That means most men are ugly.

Rhaenys · 11/01/2026 21:11

It’s fascinating to me that the cool brands now are outdoor/mountaineering or sports brands that our parents were wearing. I couldn’t believe it when Champion was en vogue a few years ago. My mum used to wear that in the 90s!

With clip on ties, youths can no longer assert their petty rebellions by having short, stubby ties.

I remember in 6th form knotting my laces then tucking them into my shoe so the fastening could barely be seen as trainers must not be ruined with a bow.
I secretly thought it was daft and uncomfortable then.

In 37 and hate tying my shoes I stick the laces inside and on the odd pair of shoes I do tie I don’t like how it looks it’s weird 😂

mintgreensoftlilac · 11/01/2026 21:42

actually tying the laces on your trainers. In the ‘90s they strictly had to be sort of tucked into your shoes which usually meant the plastic end bits digging into the bottom of your foot. I can’t remember the exact timelines but there was also a while in the ‘90s-‘00s where even wearing trainers outside of a PE context was highly uncool. Now it’s pretty much all I wear!

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 11/01/2026 22:54

The 90s was a strange time. It was more socially acceptable to show your bra straps than your socks or the ends of your shoe laces.

Bit of a controversial one but having labels for yourself. In the fringes in the 90s it was all about 'no labels', and I think that's why so many of those people now struggle with gender and sexuality labels and micro labels

clickyteeclick · 11/01/2026 23:06

Taking selfies. Of our own faces, pouting, sticking tongues out, doing peace signs. In our bedroom. Alone. Basically bragging about how good we look. And then showing it to everyone in the form of social media. It’s crazy vain yet is the norm now.

Shopping and wearing clothes from Primark. Would try so hard to hide the labels in the clothes my Mum bought for me from Primark. I remember buying a coat from Topshop (must have been in the sale!) and proudly having that label on show!

You must still be young. Primark wasn’t around when I was a kid. Tammy girl was a thing!! I often got clothes off the market. Crude copies.

We all had those Head bags with the zip off end. If you didn’t have one of those you were bullied. Backpacks weren’t even a thing. You carried your head bag (really a holdall) on the one shoulder. Kids we all into the naff naff so when I turned up with market version naff co 39 (or whatever the number was) you’d get bullied. No one really cares now on the brands of bags at school from what I’ve seen. Same with coats as well. I’ve one child who won’t wear the trendy labels and no one says anything. Most kids do wear Nike or Addidas for bags and trainers and then Canada Zavetti or Nkrth face coats. We’ve bought neither. I got bullied for not wearing the right brand of trainer (I wore Dunlop at one point) so made an effort with the Nike trainers for my kids but the one who likes no brands hasn’t really been picked on for them.

ARunByFruiting · 11/01/2026 23:18

I'm sure during the late 90s - early 2000s wearing tights was a no no and young women would rather go bear legged?

It was for sure mid nineties in Manchester
