Things now, that 90's kid would have mocked?

This is light hearted. Working in a school it is interesting to see how trends change. Sure some of this is regional, but what things do kids do now that just wasn't the done thing in the nineties?
I have noticed

  1. Double strappers. This was so uncool at the time. I am sure I still get shoulder pain now from carrying mountains of books on one shoulder. Single strap now is a bad thing. ( Good!)

  2. The star spot patches. Some kids wear about 6. Not seen any adults do this yet.

  3. Boys with massive brushes in their pockets which they whip out and swish their fringe. They even borrow each others and swish each others fringe. It is actually quite cute. My mind chuckles when I think of the 90s boys spiking their hair with pointy hair gel. But absolutely no to carrying a brush about.

  4. Water bottles. I once got in trouble for taking a drink from my water in 1998 in a lecture. In 1991 it just wouldn't have been a thing to have a watsr bottle.

I am sure there is more. AIBU to think most new trends are probably better but to miss the 90s nostalgia.

Kids of today would rip us for backing our books in wrapping paper.

Music! These days, my teen and tween love all sorts of music including stuff from all decades. In the 90s, it was the albums I got from Our Price and HMV! Definitely didn’t admit to listening to my parents stuff!

So true! My daughters spotify wrap had her age as in her 50's. It is cool to like our music. Well within reason.

Thick tights or ladders in your thin ones.

I've already seen adults at work in them tbh

Wow! Not seen any new teachers with them as yet.

Wearing white socks pulled up over leggings. I don't. I can't, it looks ridiculous.

NZDreaming · 10/01/2026 10:05

My niece happily wear white ankle socks pulled up with trainers or (and my inner 80’s child cringes so hard at this one) socks with sliders/sandals!!!! White socks were so deeply uncool when I was a teen, we did everything we could to hide their existence 😆

I had absolutely no idea what OP and others meant by star spot patches, had to Google. Are these actually used outside the house??? In what regions? They’ve not caught on at all in rural Highland Scotland.

Northern England here. Lots of students where them even in Vi form.

I left school early 90s but braces, sexuality, mental health and needing adjustments in exams (e.g. typing or a scribe) would all likely be mocked. Thankfully, none of these things cause a second thought at DS school now.

Shopping and wearing clothes from Primark. Would try so hard to hide the labels in the clothes my Mum bought for me from Primark. I remember buying a coat from Topshop (must have been in the sale!) and proudly having that label on show!

Oh yea you wouldn't have carried a primark bag around. You would put it in a bay Trading bag or Top shop.
Also plastic bags for PE lits lots use the JD sports bags now. Plaggy bag in the 90s. No way!

(often overpriced) Second hand clothes! I'm assuming this is not just around here but all these pre-loved clothes shops, depop, vinted, charity shops. Teens don't bat an eye at used clothes whereas in the 80's & 90's it was an insult to even suggest someone had stepped foot in a charity shop - and I'm a card-carrying, born & bred Midlands council estate'er (though the kids were born in Cornwall)

My 16yo often comes home with something 'new' from a place near his college & his Christmas list included shoes off depop rather than new ones.

I find it very wholesome

DysmalRadius · 10/01/2026 10:08

MULLETS!!!! Even the idea of someone having a mullet was enough to reduce us to hysterical laughter as 90s teens. I cannot believe they ever came back and am now wondering if I'll live long enough to see the cycle repeat again!

Bigbus · 10/01/2026 09:44

Putting your hands down the front of your pants! We would have absolutely laughed at a boy doing that in the 90s!

Is this a thing now? I saw a guy walking around with his hands down his pants the other day and just assumed he was a bit of a weirdo who enjoyed the feel of himself in public 😂

Wallacem · 10/01/2026 10:08

Shopping at Aldi or Lidl, or charity shops - or wearing a sweatshirt or t shirt without a logo on.

Plaggy? We called them 'placky' lol

I like the way there is more freedom for the "alternatives" (as we would once have called ourselves) to express ourselves more individually. The 90s was more conformist and fixed in its tribal subcultures

Ah see I was going to say the opposite!

In my school in the 90s there was a much wider range of looks and tastes than there seems to be among my DD’s friends who all look like little Subdued and Hollister clad clones. I blame social media /whatsapp channels.

I agree with the white socks pulled up thing. Especially white socks with sliders!! Cannot get over this.

I like to think we would have mocked the obsession with skincare, selfies and “get ready with me” videos. All so DULL and a wee bit narcissistic.

Sayingithowitis · 10/01/2026 10:10

White socks....and crocs or sliders with socks...that was what weirdo teachers wore

Oh yes so true. I remember this rhyme. Lets all go to tesco where ' Darren' buts his best clothes they are really nifty for £1.50. 😵‍💫

Buying things from charity shops.
My teens pride themselves on finding an Oxfam / Vinted bargain, whereas when I was at school it was a major insult to say someone shopped at Oxfam.

BlueOrangeRed · 10/01/2026 10:14

Oh yea you wouldn't have carried a primark bag around. You would put it in a bay Trading bag or Top shop.

In my school in the 1990s the most sought after PE bag was a River Island plastic one. All the cool girls had them!

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 10/01/2026 10:14

Cropped/ankle length trousers.

The level of piss taking if someone - male or female - had trousers that showed their socks was insane. They were called 'ankle whackers' and it was not a good thing.

I also remember turning my socks halfway inside out to make 'trainer socks' that couldn't be seen. That and the shoelaces tucked inside was a recipe for awful blisters.

I've no idea why we had such a problem with socks!

Haha what region are you in?

My friend laughs at me as we called the game chase. Tiggy. He called it Tag.

I like the regional names.

I also work in a school. It’s a big trend for lads to wear half mast black trousers with white socks showing. They look ridiculous. They would have been bullied back in the 90s if their trousers were that short.

AInightingale · 10/01/2026 10:15

Furry slipper type things, UGG boots etc, were all associated with grannies. No one under 60 would have been seen dead in them, now they are everywhere.

BlueJuniper94 · 10/01/2026 10:16

GrumpySparkler · 10/01/2026 09:41

Yes to double strappers. And on the backpack theme, actually wearing them so they sit on your back properly. They had to be a low slung as possible at my school.

Also (and admittedly I see more Mum's doing this) the white socks over the leggings. That would've been ripped the piss out of (but maybe the kids are ripping the piss out of their Mum's for this? 🤷‍♀️)

Yes this one kills me, I can't get used to seeing women with white socks pulled up over their leggings still, it's definitely a trend that would have been roundly ridiculed when I was at school

oohyoudevilyou · 10/01/2026 10:17

Tracksuits: The elastic-cuffed, pull on plain cotton matching top-and-bottom tracksuits that are everywhere now. Even in BEIGE ffs! No 90's kid would be seen dead without 4 different sports logo's on our shiny highly flammable leisure outfits!
