The BBC live story has the headline that a protestor is going to be executed tomorrow. and that 2000 have been killed in the crackdown. What a terrifying regime to live under - but so often one horror is removed from power just to end up being replaced by another.

I hope though that there are happier and much more moderate times ahead for Iran.

pandowo · 13/01/2026 12:47

I’m quite suprised there isn’t more joining us to wish for a lasting and successful change for the Iranian people ! One thing I find quite, wrong? though is the exiled shahs son, telling people to protest from the safety of America.

How awful, i hadn’t seen this yet. I’m guessing going by the white houses statement earlier that they will be getting involved now

People may have been distracted onto other threads mentioning Iran.

I joined this thread because it's the first I could find which was actually about Iran and Iranians, rather than just trying to exploit the Iranian people's suffering as a hook for other issues.Hmm
[Caveat: it's possible some of those threads did become genuinely about Iran later on; I abandoned them quite quickly based on their OPs and early responses.]

Was watching the BBC Persian Service correspondent earlier, and he is hearing very credible reports of deaths in the 1000s.

Iranians who happen to have SIM cards on neighbouring countries have been circumventing the comms shutdown by travelling to border regions where these work, to get information out

pandowo · 13/01/2026 20:22

Erfan Soltani is due to be sentenced to death by hanging tomorrow, he’s 26 ! How on earth in 2026 is this shit still happening ?!

Democracy and human rights, I support.

Bringing back the Shah and installing a pro-US, pro-Israel regime, I don't support.

I think the Iranians who are unarmed and risking their lives for freedom, should have the leadership they want, even if you don’t personally like their choice.

Playingvideogames · 13/01/2026 20:34

Absolutely rooting for them but praying the human cost is as minimal as it can be. They’re so incredibly brave. I was just reading about the 26 year old facing the death penalty tomorrow, my heart breaks for him. He reminds me of the White Roses in Nazi Germany.

This is the man I was referring to. I can’t imagine what he is going through tonight, just pure hell.

Thank you for naming him, @pandowo .

[ETA just seen crossposts. My thanks are at face value, not intended to comment on other posts. I don't think we can save Soltani but feel it's important to recognise him.]

It really is. It’s unconscionable.

And his poor family too. What a waste of a young life.

Absolutely shocking.

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/01/2026 20:38

Massive support.

The US would just be frying pan to fire.

Playingvideogames · 13/01/2026 20:38

Life seems so very cheap at the moment.

I’m praying he, and the others, are granted some kind of stay of execution, something to buy some time.

Yes me too.
Thoughts and prayers to this man and his family tonight.

GeneralPeter · 13/01/2026 20:41

Fully support. Incredibly brave.

I’ve never understood how a people can be so unlike its regime. Hopefully that’s about to change.

It feels like we’re holding our breath on this, just so awful to think about.

Depressingly, Jeremy Bowen thinks the current regime still has legs. He explains why, but I hope he's wrong.

Bowen: Authoritarian regimes die gradually then suddenly, but Iran is not there yet

A street scene at night showing protesters gathering around parked cars. Smoke can be seen and there are some fires near the crowd.

Jeremy Bowen: Authoritarian regimes die gradually then suddenly, but Iran is not there yet

The regime's opponents will hope for more pressure to accelerate the process, writes the BBC's international editor.

pocketpairs · 13/01/2026 20:48

The regime is clearly brutal, repressive and cracks down on any form of dissent. The country's limited resources are directed towards the armed forces rather than things the people need..like food and medicine.

Having said that it's laughable that so many people seem to care about the "sanctity of human life" and "human rights"..just because it's the trending new story.

15,000 people die every single day! due to starvation, where their bodies shut down after digesting their fat reserves, their muscles and then own organs..if we really cared about the sanctity of human life across the globe..food is the only thing they need. A relatively easy problem to resolve.

pandowo · 10/01/2026 11:19

To be clear, I don’t think the US should get involved, they’re really pissing me off lately sticking their noses in across the globe !

Unfortunately the chances of the uprising working without the US is slim, and like it or not Iran will need countries like the US to rebuild.

The actions of Israel and the US have done a lot to weaken the regime and I really hope the breve people are able to succeed so those who died have not lost their lives in vain.

And don't forget the descendant of the last Shah of Iran who will most likely be involved after the regime falls currently lives in the US

Lots of people are hoping for change in Iran. Just because you don't Virtue signal all over social media doesn't mean.you don't support.

I agree.

But I do hope this thread manages to stay focused on the people of Iran, not just become posters having a pop at each other.

Igotjelly · 13/01/2026 21:07

Every Iranian person I’ve ever met has been absolutely wonderful, their countrymen and women are incredibly brave. Standing side by side with them in the hope that something positive comes from this because fuck me they’re paying one hell of a price.

WhitegreeNcandle · 13/01/2026 21:10

I can’t imagine how brave these protesters are. There was an article a day or two ago in The Telegraph describing how young women are going to protest marches but writing #notthe first and not the last in lipstick on their mirrors for their families to find. They know the risks.

Apparently Iran has the fastest growing Christian Church in the world. Iran?! How brave must you be to even consider conversion.
