Volunteer on a committee, offered to compile a complicated guide line for a particular category of membership . Fellow members offered to share similar stuff from other clubs .
No one actually did
I used AI to do it and circulated document to all
Hailed as being ' excellent ' great , well done
Do I fess up ? Yes AM I BEING UNREASONABLE

Say nothing

BloominNora · 09/01/2026 17:34

Did you think about the prompt that you put into the AI and then check the document before sending it to make sure it was relevant to your committee and make any tweaks - if so, say nothing unless someone asks, in which case just say, thank you - AI helped.

If you didn't check the document and just sent out whatever ChatGPT or whatever, spat out, then I would probably just respond to the thanks with an acknowledgement that you'd used AI and for people to let you know if anything needs altering to make it relevant.

If it is used properly (carefully considered prompts, accuracy checks etc) and not with blind acceptance, using AI is no different to using editing software that does spelling and grammar checks.

They are probably praising you for actually compiling and circulating it in the first place, rather than the content. Don’t overthink it but I agree with a PP, I hope you proofread and fact checked it.

why would you need to fess up? You did create it. It wouldn't have existed without you putting the prompts in, isolating the relevant info etc.

I know there's a fine line with AI stuff but I don't see this as, for example, accepting praise for a well written story or well drawn picture, more like 'not admitting' you used excel to work out the finances rather than adding it all up by hand - you took advantage of a useful tool but it was still you responsible for the end product.

Well it’s good enough for some employment tribunals and they don’t confess until they are caught out!

KnickerlessParsons · 09/01/2026 19:45

We are positively encouraged to use AI in work.

ElizabethsTailor · 09/01/2026 19:47

I don’t understand your categorisation of the voting.

No you were not being unreasonable to use AI provided you did it properly and proofed it.

Yes, you should be transparent about the fact that you used it.

Dered · 09/01/2026 22:05

I did react to the prompts and proof read it , altered it slightly . Someone has suggested a slight amendment too . I guess to me it feels like cheating and I'm uncomfortable accepting the praise . I like the suggestion that " AI helped "

All of this. Everyone needs to be accountable for ensuring what the AI produces is accurate and fit for purpose but I also think we should all be transparent about its use. Anthropic have an excellent, free, AI course and discuss this and it includes a great statement of transparency in it.
