Cleaner putting price up by €20 per month

Butyourenotastrangermadaleine · 09/01/2026 14:13

I have two cleaners who come every two weeks for two hours
An hour before their last clean, the owner of the company texted me and said they were putting the pay up €10 per clean so €20 more per month.

Does this seem like a big jump or reasonable?

What do you currently pay per hour?

€20

It's an increase of €5 more per cleaner per clean which doesn't seem excessive.

I'd be a little annoyed that I hadn't had more warning of the increase but if they do a good job then I'm not sure I would be inclined to quibble over a small increase.

itsthetea · 09/01/2026 14:18

20 for 2 cleaners for a hour wouldn’t be minimum wage in the UK

Cantheowneroftheredcorsapleasemovetheircar · 09/01/2026 14:18

Butyourenotastrangermadaleine · 09/01/2026 14:15

€20

For both cleaners? Or €20 per hour each?

Ragamuffin8 · 09/01/2026 14:20

So before each cleaner was getting 5 euros per hour (if that, assuming owner took a cut too). So less than the UK minimum wage wage. It was a bargain to begin with!

It’s not in the U.K.

So it's gone from €20/hour to €25 for two (so actually 10/hour to 12.50)? It's a significant increase, but is it reasonable in the country you live in? Is there a minimum wage, and are they good at their job?
The amount seems very low, but that may be reasonable depending on where you are. I pay twice that (Uk)

SummerInSun · 09/01/2026 14:30

Sounds like an absolute bargain to me, but you need to ask around in your local market. If you are in a very poor country with low minimum wage, I suppose it could be excessive.

I would ask the company owner how much of the extra 5 euros is going to the actual cleaners though - I’d be much happier giving most of that money to the people doing the actual work.

itsthetea · 09/01/2026 14:32

Without knowing the country it’s hard to comment isn’t it?

purplecorkheart · 09/01/2026 15:52

If it is in Ireland it probably down to Pension Auto enrollment

Wages are v low where I am, for example, partner and I both earn just over €10 per hour, i’m a graduate, he’s a skilled manual worker
I think it’s a big jump in one go? €20
extra per month

It's a bit short notice of the change - do you have a contract which specifies when and how charges are increased? I guess if you're not happy with the change, you can find a cheaper cleaner!

Dbank · 09/01/2026 17:50

It's up to them what they want to charge, if you feel it's too much, find another cleaner.

oocooloo · 09/01/2026 17:52

You could always do your own cleaning and save €40 😊

I work two jobs, have a special needs child and don’t pay for anything for myself aside from this.

Surely that bit of information is totally irrelevant

Coconutter24 · 09/01/2026 18:07

I think it seems reasonable

CraftyMintHedgehog · 09/01/2026 18:10

So you currently pay €20 for a 2 hour clean and it's going to €30.

That means the cleaners currently earn €5/hour and now they'll earn €7.50/hour.

Thats a 50% pay increase so quite a lot!!

(Wages and cost of living are much lower in Portugal for anyone thinking this is low!!)

I would be looking into quotes from other cleaners.

Coffeeishot · 09/01/2026 18:12

Why do you need 2 cleaners? Honsestly you either pay it or you don't nobody can say if the hike is to much, but i imagine the cleaning company isn't making a profit. I can't believe they get paid so little

This. It's a 50% price increase which is a lot.

I'd find another cleaner. Wage seems fine for Portugal. Where MIL lives cleaners get 7 EUR/hour.

No so they come for two hours and I pay €40 so it’s €10 each per hour

They send two as can do the house quicker in two hours, so it’s classed as paying for four hours really
