Whose voucher is this?

My friend was trying to order something online (an expensive coat in the sale) she couldn’t do it because the website kept glitching.

I offered to order it on her behalf, I knew she was desperate to order it before it went out of stock and the website seemed to be working for me.

I managed to order it, but the company messed the order up, they sent the wrong thing, it took forever to sort out but eventually I got a refund after trying all avenues of complaining but it was a massive pita.

I gave friend her money back, we both said we’d never use that company again, friend still didn’t get the coat but had chosen another by this point.

The company gave me a significant voucher as a good will gesture. Is the voucher mine or my friends?

Yanbu - it’s yours
Yabu - it’s your friend’s

Split it.

Thebigfellaisnowsnoozing · 09/01/2026 09:13

Seems you spent the most time sorting the order so it's your imo.

Celestialmoods · 09/01/2026 09:13

Share it

Mum27383 · 09/01/2026 09:13

I’d say it’s yours because it was a PITA for you.

Mum27383 · 09/01/2026 09:14

And you wouldn’t have gone through it all if you weren’t trying to help your friend.

But you could share the value of the voucher if you actually use it and are feeling generous.

Chasingsquirrels · 09/01/2026 09:14

If neither of you would use the company again is is not a bit of a moot point?

Grabacoffeeandcake · 09/01/2026 09:14

I should have said, my friend hasn’t asked for the voucher, but I wasn’t sure whether I should offer it. So a bit of a moral dilemma.

ChilliMochaCoco · 09/01/2026 09:14

It's a grey area but personally I'd give it to my friend to be generous. After all, you wouldn't have got it if it wasn't for her wanting the coat in the first place.

KeyItIn · 09/01/2026 09:14

I think you can keep it.

Well I wouldn’t buy from them but I’d use a free voucher.

Would be mad not to really it’s free.

You’ve both agreed never to use the company again so why even ask? Neither of you would use it anyway….

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 09/01/2026 09:18

£100 - split it. £20 - not worth the hassle, it's yours.
How much is it @Grabacoffeeandcake ?

bestbefore · 09/01/2026 09:20

Where’s the voucher for?

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 09/01/2026 09:21

it was HER transaction it’s hers

RollOnSunshine · 09/01/2026 09:22

This one is very much open for interpretation and there are good arguments for hers, yours and split.

If she does not know about it then keep it. Letting her know willl only give rise for disagreements.

RollOnSunshine · 09/01/2026 09:23

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 09/01/2026 09:21

it was HER transaction it’s hers

The voucher was not given for the transaction. It was given for the inconvenience caused due to the companies errors which OP had to deal with.

InterestedDad37 · 09/01/2026 09:25

Best outcome is:

  1. You offer to share it, and...
  2. She says 'no, don't be silly, you did all the donkey work, you have it'
Rosamutabilis · 09/01/2026 09:26

Who had to spend their time complaining and chasing? If you did it all and she did nothing then I'd say the voucher should be split as you've both had to suffer inconvenience.

Floatlikeafeather2 · 09/01/2026 09:30

You did the donkey work. The hassle was yours to deal with. The voucher is a goodwill gesture in compensation for all that. It was given to you, not your friend, therefore it's rightfully yours.

MangoFive · 09/01/2026 09:30

Something vaguely related which may help your decision.

Many years ago now but I was entitled to apply for compensation for a work travel thing. However I wouldn’t get to keep it - so on top of my own personal inconvenience with the travel issue I couldn’t be arsed going through the hassle of the claim if I wasn’t going to benefit.

It’s yours. But I also wouldn’t tell her if you don’t intend splitting it.

notcomfortable · 09/01/2026 09:31

Its yours
Not even a grey area. She got her money back
You got compensated for your time by the voucher

Grabacoffeeandcake · 09/01/2026 09:31

I spent a significant amount of time complaining, waiting on the phone, queuing for a live chat, emailing. Several hours, it was not easy to resolve at all. But friend had the disappointment of not getting the coat and had to wait for the refund (obviously not my fault) but still a disappointment and inconvenience.

I wouldn’t buy from the company just because they were so difficult to deal with, but I did think I would use the voucher to buy my dc some presents.

But I will offer to split it with friend. I wasn’t sure whether I should offer it to her as it’s a freebie

OP posts:
Blushingm · 09/01/2026 09:33

Depends how much it was for

SmileyMoonset · 09/01/2026 09:34

If I was the friend I wouldn’t accept the voucher.

I’d be mortified you had to go to all that trouble for something you’d ordered on my behalf. I’d feel much better about the whole thing if you got a free item.

babasaclover · 09/01/2026 09:35

Surely if neither of you were going to use the company again, it’s irrelevant because you won’t be spending the voucher
