Neighbours and their smoking

We live in a square and one of the neighbours has an ashtray on the porch, it's at the front of the house. The guy stands in the porch and smokes and leaves all the stubs in this ash tray. Can you still buy ashtrays? This isn't a proper one, it looks like an old saucer. Anyway the result is that all the fagends blow all over the square and into other people's front gardens etc making a mess. It's not just ordinary cigarettes either, it's both them and rollups. I've never smelled weed but you never know.

Anyway I'm sick of picking them up. Is it reasonable to say anything or ask them to do it round the back where their garden is fenced?

Can you complain to landlord?
No reason that he can’t take the stubbed end back in to his bin, disgusting leaving it all in a shared area and no way would I be paying to sort it out.

I dont blame you, also the smell of cigarettes really travels and stinks / goes in through open windows and makes the inside of other houses stink.

I would look into buying (not that you should have to) an ashtray / cheap upturned pot abd saucer, and just bump into him one day (have it ready in your porch ready)…. Say “hey I see you smoke, I bought you this I thought it might help keep it from flying round your garden, isnt it clever look”. All bright and breezy.

Or as I am finding my perimenopause state “your ends are flying everywhere, have this and make the square tidy in fed up picking them up”.

I hate smoking with a vengeance so for that fact along Imwould knock on his door and ask him to smoke in his back garden

As a smoker, I use clip top jars as an ashtray - hidden inside plant pots away from children - and it's likely he's just not considered the drifting fag ends issue, so absolutely not unreasonable to request that he use a lidded ashtray (and yes you can still buy them!) to avoid it impacting on you. As a pp suggested you could provide an inexpensive option (I use the IKEA jars) with a breezy suggestion that he may not have noticed, or you could just let him know and ask him to find a solution. Hopefully he won't be unreasonable himself!

Wash out a baked bean tin, and ask him to use that . No more fag butt's on the floor. Simple.

Weird thing to say.

I smoke roll ups - however, I'm a middle class accountant with a penchant for antique silver cigarette holders. Is this more socially acceptable? 😜

I know loads of people who smoke roll ups and never smoke or chuck their ciggie butts anywhere except in bins or those spinning ashtrays.
