7 hour flight with DH and DS(4). As soon as seatbelt lights went off DH fully reclined exhausted DSs seat so he could sleep. The woman behind snapped at DH to put the seat back up as drinks would be coming around soon. DH said no as drinks currently not being served. She called him a selfish twat to her OH.
Drinks/snacks start coming around. Woman tells DH to put the seat back up. DH put the seat back up half way so to not wake DS. She tells him to put it fully up. He tells her DS is sleeping. Her OH then tells her to speak to steward which she does. Steward asks DH to put the seat back up - he tells her DS is sleeping. I tell him to just put it back up, he again says DS is sleeping. Air Steward starts getting pissed off, I snap at DH to put the bloody seat up. He does so reluctantly and DS does not wake.

Once everything is cleared away he puts the seat fully back again. The woman complains that he’s doing that out of badness because “the kid” is still asleep. Her OH confirms that yes, DH is a twat.

My take on it is that both were being unreasonable at different times. My sister however says this was all on DH.

I’m afraid in our case when you’re running a business and have ££££ jobs on site you don’t have a lot of choice.
Sometimes that’s just the way.

Edited

Yeah plenty of people travel with their laptop. When you’re at airports that ask you to remove your laptops at security I see lots going on the trays.

I work remotely and brought mine when I left just before Christmas although I haven’t opened it up until the last few days.

Some people also bring it along for other reasons - watching Netflix on it, sending emails to family or social media since not everyone wants to use their phone for everything.

sabababa · 10/01/2026 12:09

I fly a lot unfortunately, long haul and short haul, and usually recline my seat if i want to sleep. However, never during meal service ( including drinks), that's the basic etiqeutte. Your dh was wrong.
That said, i had one flight where a family with kids reclined their seats immediately when they could and all were fast asleep. I didn't have the heart to wake them and managed during meal service. It's really not such a big deal.
Sounds like they both behaved like assholes.

It was absolutely 100% on your arrogant, ignorant twat of a DH. Your DS was clearly oblivious to the seat position.

It is horrible being behind a reclined aircraft seat, especially if in economy, because you can't put your tray fully down, it is shoved against you and your drinks and food become a problem. Very uncomfortable.

This is why many airlines now have fixed position seats in their economy class. Especially the no-frills airlines.

The main reason the no frill airlines do not have recline function is that it makes the seat heavier

Robbie82 · 10/01/2026 12:12

100% unreasonable and being a pain to the folk behind

Bring your laptop on flights and put it on the table in front of you whilst the lights are still on

If it’s a night time or long flight remove it when the lights are put out and if someone reclines in front of you then you can do the same
Job done

( I’ve never been on a plane that has really tight seats though, but no one reclines ime if you’ve got your laptop out )

Ummm, i often work on flights and its never stopped anyone reclining nor would i expect it to. Yes, i inwardly groan but its their right to do so.
Heck, people reclined many times when i flew with an infant on my lap and i would never have dreamed of asking them not to because of my decisions.

Alliod40 · 10/01/2026 12:17

It's a pity they didn't have the police waiting for him at the other side for arguing with cabin crew..obnoxious twat,I bet your life is hell with him in day to day life OP

Oh well as long as you’re comfortable.

If you dont like economt seats, pay for extra legroom or upgrade.

Exactly there’s nothing you can do about except inwardly 😩 groan. I don’t need to travel for work now ( or only by train) and quite honestly can’t be arsed anymore with long haul flights unless we pay extra for front seats

Leo800 · 10/01/2026 12:21

I’d be embarrassed if my DH behaved like that. What an idiot.

Squeeky112 · 10/01/2026 12:23

Your DH is a twat. In my view, seats on planes should not be able to be reclined. They cause so many problems - always caused by an arrogant twat pushing their seat back with no regard for people behind. Less legroom, no space to read, harder to watch screens, food/drink impossible.

That’s perfect for me. Love easy jet and yep Ryan air.

Yeah the sooner they do away with them the better.

What if it’s uncomfortable for you to be upright for hours?

Flying is uncomfortable, but that's the default position of the seat.

wombat1a · 10/01/2026 12:41

The only time your DH was U was during the drinks time, arguing with the steward makes him a TW*T. Other times nothing wrong with what your DH did.

I'd ban reclining seats on planes. Only dicks use them anyway.

I’ve never been on a flight but I’m wondering why do they have reclining seats if it’s not acceptable to recline them ??

That's exactly what I was thinking like how far apart are the seats? The ones that recline to the ones that don't?

Lunarises · 10/01/2026 12:56

I've only ever been on 1 plane and that was only for an hour going to Newcastle from London and I was 7 but was DS comftable in sitright position? I guess it's a touchy subject if enough room I wouldn't of minded the child sleeping but if no room atall after reclining I'd probably have a problem with it being 7 hours

wombat1a · 10/01/2026 12:58

notimagain · 08/01/2026 18:37

@DrPrunesqualer

Night is set by the flight crew
If you’re crossing time zones they put the lights out, blinds shut and the lights back on again in accordance with the time zone you’ll be arriving in

Be interested know what airlines have that as an official policy..doing that as routine would cause serious problems and grief on late evening departures out of London for somewhere like Singapore and elsewhere in the Far East...you'd be putting the lights on about an hour or two into the flight...

Usually on flights, day or night, the cabin crew encourage blinds down after the initial meal service to help those whose sleep has been stuffed up by time zone changes/connections, whatever to catch up on Z'ds (also sometimes it also helps make the IFE more visible), and only really insist on blinds up just prior to arrival be it AM, PM or night time local time.

Edited

Done flight to/from far east a lot of times (worked near Japan for a number of years).

Flights out from AMS (always used AMS not London) were normally around 8pm AMS time, meal service 2 hrs in, cleared away by midnight and then lights out. LIghts then stayed out for around 8 hrs until around 2 hrs (meal time) before landing (3pm local Asian time). Jetlag usually take 2-3 days to get over this direction

Flying back to UK, plane takes off around midnight local asia time, 2 hrs later you get food, then 1-2 hrs after that lights out and windows dimmed. It stays dimmed until around 2 hr before landing (meal time) when its often still dark outside and then the sun catches you up for a 6am landing in light at AMS. Jetlag usually takes 5-6 days to get over this direction.

Oh and 95% of seats will be reclined for the flight except for meals.

On the new planes they don't have blinds the windows dim themselves and the crew sets them to black and don't allow you to reset them.

Even on big name flights in economy there’s not much space. If you’re over six foor there’s not much leg room at all for example even without the seat in front reclining .

Yep, you can like it but dont kid yourself they did this because of some philosophical objection to reclining. I dont think they've ever reclined.
I can assure you that you wouldn't be cheering for a non reclining seat on a 12 hour flight!

Although neither of the pps airlines mentioned do 12hour flights
Think there max is about half that

I can assure you I would!!! I don’t mind reclining after a meal on a night flight when the lights go out (but have in recent times actually felt claustrophobic but thats just me.) It was precisely after a 12 hour flight in a middle row seat and the person in front fully reclined within twenty minutes of take off ( more or less) that I decided never again .

Teddleshon1 · 10/01/2026 14:35

I don’t understand what airlines people are flying on that a reclined seat in front of you means you can’t use your seat back screen. I’ve never had a problem with this across multiple airlines. They all tilt so you can adjust the angle of the screen.

It’s self evident that you should put your seat upright during meals and drink service.
