7 hour flight with DH and DS(4). As soon as seatbelt lights went off DH fully reclined exhausted DSs seat so he could sleep. The woman behind snapped at DH to put the seat back up as drinks would be coming around soon. DH said no as drinks currently not being served. She called him a selfish twat to her OH.
Drinks/snacks start coming around. Woman tells DH to put the seat back up. DH put the seat back up half way so to not wake DS. She tells him to put it fully up. He tells her DS is sleeping. Her OH then tells her to speak to steward which she does. Steward asks DH to put the seat back up - he tells her DS is sleeping. I tell him to just put it back up, he again says DS is sleeping. Air Steward starts getting pissed off, I snap at DH to put the bloody seat up. He does so reluctantly and DS does not wake.

Once everything is cleared away he puts the seat fully back again. The woman complains that he’s doing that out of badness because “the kid” is still asleep. Her OH confirms that yes, DH is a twat.

My take on it is that both were being unreasonable at different times. My sister however says this was all on DH.

Ugh sitting behind someone who reclines their seat is almost as bad as someone watching a film on their phone or tablet without headphones!!

Having said that, if seats recline then there’s no actual rules about only reclining them at night - we says it’s etiquette or an unwritten rule but he is within his rights to recline other than when drinks and meals are being served.

Airlines should just lock the seats upright imo.

Ach. One of the risks of air travel is that the person in the seat in front will recline it.

Until airlines stop having reclining seats people are going to recline them.

Yep the tiny space that you have even on bigger companies is a bit claustrophobic anyway if your in the middle of a row. It actually puts me off long haul flights. Give me a quick easy jet or ryan air flight over that !

aneelli · 09/01/2026 23:47

He’s 100% a twat!!! What a horrid person to be married to and pro create with! I’d never do that as it’s impacting the person behind. How would he have liked it if the person in front of him full reclined!! Twat

It's not OK if it leads to massive discomfort for the person behind....

I had this flying back from China... An entitled arse thought it was OK to put it back maximally... I could barely squeeze out of my seat... When u was sitting I couldn't even make a fist between my face and the reclined seat... Literally 4-5 inches...

The stewards remonstrated with him... He refused and started waving his fists around...

I feel claustrophobic just reading that!

But that’s exactly it - it’s YOUR opinion.

It’s my opinion that if someone wants to recline their reclinable seat, they are perfectly entitled to do this. And if airlines didn’t want passengers to recline their seats they would fix it so it couldn’t be done.

Or they would put a message over the tannoy saying “it is forbidden to recline seats on a daytime flight”.

Why didn’t the silly cow just recline her own seat instead of getting herself irate and throwing swear words around?

Probably because the ‘silly cow’ didn’t want to be an inconsiderate twat. It is so selfish to recline your seat on a long haul flight. This happened to me recently on a 7hr flight from Canada. Couldn’t watch the TV which is the only thing that distracts me on a flight as I’m a nervous flyer. The man was literally in my lap and I couldn’t see the TV properly as inches from my face. So selfish, next time you fly please think of others rather than just yourself.

Summerbubbles · 10/01/2026 00:11

When I've travelled on trains, if you want to recline, the flat part of the seat slides forward along with the base of the upright. Therefore you can recline without impacting the person behind. This should be how plane seats recline too.

But I'm answer to the op yes your dh was unreasonable.

FlyingCatGirl · 10/01/2026 08:24

pottymouth40 · 08/01/2026 17:47

Who says?

It's decency! Yeh reclining is great for the person sat back in the seat but it's bloody awful for the person sat behind who is trying to watch a film or read a book on the table and try and stop a drink spilled. I had a moronic woman on my last long haul flight that kept violently dropping the chair back and she'd keep leaning forward and slamming herself back again! There's too much movement in a reclined chair for people to body slamming it!

Bring your laptop on flights and put it on the table in front of you whilst the lights are still on

If it’s a night time or long flight remove it when the lights are put out and if someone reclines in front of you then you can do the same
Job done

( I’ve never been on a plane that has really tight seats though, but no one reclines ime if you’ve got your laptop out )

The person in front won't know you've got a laptop and there's a risk of it getting damaged when idiots suddenly slam the seat back. Plus it's taking a laptop on holiday when you don't really need to add it could be safe and secure at home.

Teddleshon1 · 10/01/2026 08:38

I find this idea that reclining your flight on a long haul flight is selfish just bizarre. Many people will be on 24 hour+ journeys involving connecting flights in different time zones - are you really expecting them to sit bolt upright in an economy seat the whole time? There’s no way I could sleep in that position.

Because she wanted to sit up and have a drink. And reclining as soon as the seat belt sign went off is a bit much. Do the people that recline on planes keep seatbelts on? Did the DH undo his son's seatbelt because we all know dangerous sudden turbulence can be.

But are you expecting everybody to have a moving, slamming seat back in their face the whole flight and have it made very difficult to use the seat back TV and use the table. Not everybody wants to lay back for the whole flight and sleep, many people can't sleep on planes.

FlyingCatGirl · 10/01/2026 08:46

ThejoyofNC · 08/01/2026 18:02

The plastic cups on a plane hold maybe 200ml of liquid. Could she not just hold her bloody cup? I'm on your DH side, there's no rule about not reclining for drinks. What did you want him to do, keep moving the seat up and down like a yo-yo?

You really want people to feel they have no right to use the tables! I have conditions in my hands so it can cause issues if I sit clutching something for too long

liveforsummer · 10/01/2026 08:55

Maybe slightly reasonable to recline in the first instance if he was struggling to get to sleep, accompanied by an apology and an explanation that it was just to help him actually fall asleep but once asleep then DH was totally unreasonable for the rest

mmmcoffeeandcake · 10/01/2026 08:58

You DH is a dick.
wan behind could’ve been politer but JFC why are you married to such a prick?

PistachioTiramisu · 10/01/2026 09:04

Chicaontour · 10/01/2026 09:09

I was just on a ten hour flight and a teenager in front of me tried to recline from the off. We had just been served drinks, and he did it so violently, and without looking that my drink nearly went flying all over me. I asked him not to while we were having drinks and food and he clearly wasn't happy in him and his mum had a little snipe to themselves about it but eventually when everyone went to sleep and everyone reclined which was all fine, but then in the morning, he got up walking around and was just generally stood around the plane and never put his seat up, and I had to ask him to again. And that was just cf.

You cannot just recline, because chairs recline, unless you are a completely entitled narcissist.

I have had the seat coming back violently issue the last time I flew long haul, I've nearly been hit in the face by my seat back TV! What annoys me also is these tend to be the people that have to be told to put their seat up for landing rather than have the decency just do it when the seat belt light comes on.

If flying for work most people need their laptop. Not everyone flies just for a holiday
and
In my line of work ( and dhs) we have to keep an eye on work even on holiday.
So people do take their laptops

Another pp noted they always look back and tell someone they are going to recline. That makes sense as people could have drinks etc out.

FlyingCatGirl · 10/01/2026 09:17

Soontobe60 · 08/01/2026 22:37

Why? Personally I recline my seat as soon as possible because I suffer terribly with cramp when my hips are bent at 90 degrees. If the person behind me asked me to put my seat up at mealtime I would, but I’d put it back down as soon as the trays were collected.
The tables in the backs of the seats are designed so that they are still useable if the seat is reclined. I guess if you’re really fat said table might be too near to ones tummy for comfort though.

You don't have to be really fat for it to be an issue! When a seat keeps getting slammed back in your face! When your nearly get hit by the back of the seat when I'm using the table to to place a book on because I have conditions in my hands that mean I can't clutch anything for a long length of time without potentially causing a painful flare up. I sometimes have to lean on my table to try and sleep because laying back on my back can give me sleep paralysis. Stop being tight and buy the seat you need rather than penalising the passenger behind you with your permanent reclining!

I see very few laptops in use on planes in the 8 to 10 flights I do a year and most people going on travels have no interest in being in touch with work whilst away as it's a bit of a sad way to live. The point I'm making is that there's no point people just carting laptops on holiday in the hope it stops someone reclining a seat.

I’m afraid in our case when you’re running a business and have ££££ jobs on site you don’t have a lot of choice.
Sometimes that’s just the way.

"See I think she was being unreasonable at the start as food / drinks were not being served."

Irrelevant. You shouldn't recline your seat if it's uncomfortable to the person behind you.

What if it’s uncomfortable for you to be upright for hours?

Business class
especially when a lot of airlines are now getting rid of reclining seats except for long haul

You can always get up and stretch, unless there’s turbulence.

Im sorry but that seat should have gone back up the very minute the drinks came round.

And if the cabin crew ask you to to put your seat in the upright position, you should do it. Even if it means waking your child up.
