What are the small towels for?

In a holiday let, you usually get a big towel and a small towel arranged artfully at the foot of the bed. What to do you consider the small towel for/what do you call it?

I am surprised the number of people who are using hand towels for wet hair I find them much too small. Now I’m worried I have an exceptionally large head.

My mind is blown. I've always been annoyed how most places don't supply hand towels in bathrooms (I take my own). I assumed it was for drying your hair.

Why wouldn't you just move it to the bathroom and use it for your hands?

Agreed. OP is acting like the hand towel is chained to the bed, in the manner of a medieval book in a monastic library. Towels are portable! You can carry them anywhere! And use them to dry anything, or any part of you!

FickleOcelot · 08/01/2026 17:21

I've always assumed that the hand towels are there folded up neatly to signify they're clean and fresh for you, then you move them to the bathroom to be used as hand towel like any sane person.

Hand towel (for hands and possibly face if face washed at the sink), bath towel (for drying hair and for small children), bath sheet (for drying body after bath/shower)

Some people like their own hand towel I guess?

They put them on the beds so you know they’re clean and fresh.

Elsvieta · 08/01/2026 17:25

I call them "pointless", and wonder why I can't have a MEDIUM size towel which is neither too big nor too small to wrap around my hair.

BeeCucumber · 08/01/2026 17:25

It’s a penis beaker towel.

A towel is just a towel, you can dry what you like with it. There are no laws about how towels of different sizes should be used.

RedRiverShore6 · 08/01/2026 17:27

Guest towel, which is a small version of hand towel, we use them in our caravan as they are small

spicycats · 08/01/2026 17:27

a better question is why are they always slightly too small to wrap around your hair?!

Hand towel

But I do wish a bath sheet (for body) bath towel (for hair) and hand towel (for hands lol) were provided as standard.

A thousand times this

Did it not occur to you that you can use it for any purpose you wish? What did you think would happen if you transferred it to the bathroom and used it as a hand towel?

Oh God! This is going to turn into part 2 of the flannel thread isn’t it? 🙄

Coldiron · 08/01/2026 17:33

I slum it and use the large towel to dry my hands as well as everything else. This allows me to repurpose the small towel as the “neck towel” which I roll up into a sausage shape and place under my neck whilst sleeping

Lisavanderpumpsdog · 08/01/2026 17:35

And it’s never occurred to you to use the small towel they did provide to dry your hands?

ParmaVioletTea · 08/01/2026 17:36

It’s a hand towel! Why would anyone not know that?

I thought exactly the same thing. Those are nowhere near big enough. I DO have quite a big noggin and also quite a lot of hair.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 08/01/2026 17:41

Husband's would be a habd towel for hand drying and mine for wrapping my hair

The Borrowers. Pod creeps in when he can and borrows them for use as rugs. Homily likes them as they are absorbent and warm to walk on. They are a bit big though so Pod has suggested that now he is getting older, not as strong, back troubles, Arrietty be allowed to help bring them back home. Homily is as you might expect worried in case her daughter is seen but Arrietty is delighted and very much looking forward to being allowed out.

People seem to be missing the point. They are used! For drying hair, leaving my hands undried. Hence why I take my own.

What are all you people who use them as personal hand towels doing with your hair!?

I want to stay in the same hotel as you. This sounds wondrous. We love The Borrowers in this house. This would make DD2’s holiday!

I manage to multitask my towels: drying both hands and hair.

Although I have so much hair I tend to use a second bath towel for it.

Lunde · 08/01/2026 17:54

I usually hang them in the bathroom as hand towels
