I'm going to the supermarket on my way home tonight, to grab a basket of provisions. I'm not panic buying, but I usually do my food shop on a Friday evening as well, so I'm low on essential supplies. I'm leaving work a bit early to try and get home before the storm. I'll work from home tomorrow if the roads are bad.

ThePerfectWeekend · 08/01/2026 15:49

We've had snow (4-5 inches) for a week. Does it only count if it happens down South? I'm on my way North Yorkshire to Liverpool and back shortly to drop DD at uni. I can't go earlier.
I keep checking the route and it looks OK. I'll book in somewhere if it's bad and always travel prepared.

ChocolatesAndRainbows · 08/01/2026 14:31

ook you do you. But I’m not the one panic buying because it might be a bit snowy.

I wonder if you are the same kind as people from Aberdeenshire who haven’t been able to get anywhere for the best part of a week, but despite there being an amber warning for snow last week are now complaining they have no food in and are blaming the council for not doing better to keep every single road open?

Leo800 · 08/01/2026 15:50

Schools have been shut early here & all trains cancelled tonight. We’ve just had an emergency alert through on our phones so it’s looking quite serious. Have got the candles out & everything charged in case of a power cut.

The storm forecast is for high wind and rain, not snow.

Not in North Wales, our forecast is for heavy drifting snow. The snow from last weekend has only just melted here.

MrsWinslowsSoothingSyrup · 08/01/2026 15:52

My storm planning:

I have moved my car well away from neighbours wheelie bins (this is my usual pre-windyweather prep)

We don't all live on the South coast.

For Christ's sake did the poster say that? No of course not, honestly....other posters have mentioned where they are so why not?

BloominNora · 08/01/2026 15:56

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 08/01/2026 15:38

Yes i do realise that...

I assume when you say South Coast you don't mean Cornwall given they are now under a red weather warning

There are other areas too. This post shows whose understanding the weather and who isn't.

Only idiots go out in heavy weather conditions when they dont have too.
You are repeatedly told not to go out unless you have too.

How did people cope with rain/snow/wind/ice before we had all these dire warnings and ridiculous hyperbole? We just got on with it - schools and offices open, no panic buying, no scaremongering. If you lived through the Great Storm of 1987, this is nothing.

TommyAtkins · 08/01/2026 16:08

I’ve just popped into a hardware store to get some firelighters.

People were in there panic buying sledges. I I hope they’re not going to be disappointed though, as the weather forecast is predicting rain around here

1987 was a hurricane in October - hurricane's don't tend to trap people in their houses without power for a week like snow storms can.

Oh and 18 people died in that storm...

Maybe it there had been warnings for the ‘87 storm hundreds of people wouldn’t have been injured or killed.

LBFseBrom · 08/01/2026 16:09

I had no idea there was going to be a storm! I doubt it will affect me much, I'm indoors.

I looked at forecast and it said, "Heavy rain and a moderate breeze". Tomorrow is, "light rain and a fresh breeze". No word of any storm.

blobby10 · 08/01/2026 16:09

I was a 70s child so normally really laid back about any snow/ice/wind/rain etc etc however all the warnings and advise and articles about this storm have made even me start to feel anxious. I hate that I'm constantly checking on weather updates on phone and PC - it won't make any difference as if it's going to snow it will do and getting to work will be shitty tomorrow. I hate social media

Sleepasaurus · 08/01/2026 16:11

Currently watching our trees dancing through the window. It’s all getting a bit exciting out there.

I’ve been poorly all week so already tucked up with a hot water bottle and lots of soup in the cupboard. Millions of candles dotted around and we are likely just to go to bed early and cuddle up with the cats (they are not impressed).

We have camping equipment if needed (not unusual for us to lose power).
Dh has checked the outbuildings and moved the cars away from a dodgy looking tree.

We are in the red zone.

vanillalattes · 08/01/2026 16:11

We won't be doing anything as the forecast for our area is...nothing.

If we do wake up to lots of snow, I'll be cancelling work unless I can get my car out (dog walker) but I'll deal with that in the morning.

You know lots of people died in those storms? At least they died without panicking before hand I guess.

WatchingTVagain · 08/01/2026 15:47

I work in a school and volunteer for a charity.

The charity has sent out a national communication to staff and volunteers saying stay safe, don't attempt to drive anywhere, work from home etc etc.

School has sent out a message which equates to get your backside into work by any means possible. 🙄

Ha, so typical and back in the day, nobody was told to just stay home and not worry about setting work. There was even mention of live teaching.

I heard that there is going to be a storm but, no - i havent done anything to prepare.

Probably will move our bins tomorrow if it is very strong but, I wont be going out and buying food that we dont need.

Maybe if it is snowing etc tomorrow we might walk round to the local shop if its open and get some treats.

A lot of people didn’t live through it.
