To not want to go to USA?

DalekStarmer · 08/01/2026 09:05

DH and I used to go to the states every year on holiday. Different places each time - we loved it. This stopped during Covid when our holiday to Montana was cancelled. After Covid we planned to go back but ended up cancelling due to various things. Anyway, DH is keen to get back to our US trips and wanted to go last year. I said I didn’t fancy it due to Trump and the new hostile attitude towards foreigners. I said I’d consider it this year … now I’m even less in favour of it. It just doesn’t feel safe at all. DH is disappointed. AIBU?

I’m American and I wouldn’t travel there right now, no. I haven’t been back in 8 years.

KenAdams · 08/01/2026 09:06

I've decided not to go until after this administration is out. We have family there though.

MinnieCauldwell · 08/01/2026 09:08

I wouldn't want to give the trump regime my money. I have a friend there in a red state but I will never visit again now.

I would love to go to Canada though. I think they would be more welcoming also.

BitOutOfPractice · 08/01/2026 09:09

We went to Massachusetts last year to visit friends. Not even a whiff of trump there. Maybe pick your spot?

Or, here’s a thought, pick somewhere else in the big wide world. Why is your dh so wedded to America?

Coffeeishot · 08/01/2026 09:09

I wouldn't go atm i would rather have a "dissapointed" husband than visit the US.

MapleOakPine · 08/01/2026 09:11

There are lots of other places in the world to go to. Isn't your DH keen to visit any of them? I wouldn't want to go to the US right now.

DalekStarmer · 08/01/2026 09:12

We’ve been to various places in Italy since the USA trips stopped. I quite fancy trying Sicily this year

Not much of a holiday if you’re likely to feel ‘on edge’. There’s so many other places in the world, and as someone else has said, Canada would be an obvious alternative.

WhatIsTheCharge · 08/01/2026 09:13

I’m married to an American…..we got the hell outta dodge back in December and came back to the U.K.
We won’t be going back for the foreseeable future.

ScaredOfFlying · 08/01/2026 09:13

I don’t fear it being unsafe, though have heard that some cities have much more visible drug problems than before. I have had amazing holidays in the past to NY, California, Texas and New England. However we have decided as a family not to go there while Trump remains in office. We know he doesn't give a shit about our meagre tourist dollar but it feels wrong to endorse his regime.

LemonyCurd · 08/01/2026 09:13

Honestly, I think it’s mental. US is perfectly safe. It feels a really performative, social media driven thing atm to say you refuse to go there because you don’t like Trump.

It’s safe if you’re white and have an American accent.

Its categorically not safe in major cities for people who are even slightly brown and/or have a foreign accent with the Gestapo marching around.

Zeroninethirty · 08/01/2026 09:15

Yanbu to not want to go there. In general its probably safe for a tourist but just seems so messed up and yiud have to bite your tongue in certain places.. is it wyoming or montana that have the highest trump support per capita? (Albeit capita smaller!) .

My American friends only go back to see family and because in their words "only because we have to"

Go to Canada 🇨🇦 ive always enjoyed trips there.

Boolabus · 08/01/2026 09:16

I love the States have worked there before and have family there. I was last there in 2024 so not too long ago. I have no interest in going at the moment while Trump is in power. We have family in Seattle and had been planning to visit at some stage next year. We have all agreed it might be nicer to meet just over the border in Canada for a holiday instead.

Sarah2891 · 08/01/2026 09:17

Definitely not. I wouldn't go near there.

FerrisWheelsandLilacs · 08/01/2026 09:18

We went to Texas last year (but we are white and I’m not sure if think the same if I wasn’t) and everyone was very welcoming to us as foreigners. I think because it’s not a typical place for foreign tourists (although we visited all the big cities), it was novel to them. All of the police, government, healthcare and hospitality workers that we interacted with were great and welcoming.

We’re going back to Chicago this year.

But I think it’s understandable why you’re reticent.

Hotandbothered222 · 08/01/2026 09:18

Not safe? Genuinely, what do you think is going to happen to you, as a tourist?

MissSookieStackhouse · 08/01/2026 09:18

YANBU. The USA will still be there to visit when Trump’s gone. Lots of other fantastic places worldwide to visit in the meantime. How about Canada instead if he wants to head in that general direction?

We goto the USA a fait bit and i dont buy into alot of the nonsense alot here do about the USA. But even i'm a little unsure after yesterday.

Maybe suggest a canada road trip. Loads to see and a similarish vibe to the USA.

Lou7171 · 08/01/2026 09:23

I'm sure you'll be safe. But saying that, I wouldn't go out of principle.

Canada is a good alternative.

Well yes, anyone breaching a visa should be detained. She might have claimed she wasn’t working, but she arranged her trip through “workaway” and the name gives a clue that working might be involved.

I’ve just read that article and it says that Canada wouldn’t let her in with her tourist visa because they thought she had been working in the US.

Yorkshirelass04 · 08/01/2026 09:24

I'm not given them any ounce of support or tourist revenue until they do something about their president.

This is scare moungering rubbish. The canadians had issue with her which is why the USA also did and tbf it was her own stupid fault.
