I work in finance admin and although I’m extremely organised and proactive, numbers are not my strong point. I also have no pension to speak of so I feel like I need to concentrate on finding a role that won’t give me searing maths anxiety and has decent benefits.

from what I’ve heard it’s quite difficult to get in to, but if I can, what departments would be best to get apply to so I can get my foot in the door?

Like with any large, sprawling network of organisations there are indeed some dedicated hardworking people, but my God there is a great deal of utter dross in there too.

Just like our Sainted NHS...

MI5 are Civil Servants, as are the MOD.

I’m almost certain most of the people who work in these departments work a hell of a lot harder than you and have more of an impact.

Ambassadors too are civil servants ...

Indeed. Can you imagine the working hours of the team working with the UKs ambassador to the US since Trumps inauguration? I wouldn’t be surprised to hear they’d all developed drug habits trying to stay awake and respond to the 24/7 insanity!

A good friend works for the British Embassy in Ukraine.

It’s practically a 24/7 holiday, I tell you. The time he gets with MoD psychiatrists to try and cope with the horrific things he witnesses first hand is the equivalent of a publicly funded spa day.

[/sarcasm]

I could talk about the police civilians who have to review evidence of CSA if you like. My good friend needed 2 years to recover after 5 years of that. They had studied computing at uni and ended up recovering that filth off devices for the police.

And you might as well sack the civil servants that nobody knows about that find terrorists on the daily and prevent atrocities. Lazy bastards keeping us safe while waiting for their gold plated pensions.
