So 2 of my dc have recently been prescribed glasses. Eldest just tested yesterday.
As they are under 16 they get them on nhs so at no/low cost depending on frames.
Eldest is excited to get glasses so was texting sil this morning. Within minutes i get a text from her :
Hi dc1 delighted to b getting glasses..ask them for both his and dc3 to get a receipt under my name (not theirs) so I can claim for it for u...tests and glasses. Thanks xo'

This isnt the first time shes asked about it, ive never took it on, ignored it because theres alterior motive here.

Why would she need it when im not paying anyway?

What? What is she wanting to claim it under? You’ve not been very clear in what she actually wants.

It doesn’t matter anyway. You can’t have the receipt made out in her name as the paperwork all has the patient’s name on it.

FatBottomGirlz · 06/01/2026 14:56

Just message back and say thanks for offering, but it's free anyway as they are under 16.

Sounds like she has some insurance/health policy where she can reclaim costs and is offering to use it on your behalf. (Which would be fraudulent, but let's not go there as you are not interested in her offer)

Cucumbermunch · 06/01/2026 14:56

Your child must be exceptionally close to his aunt to be desperate to message her about it!

Might she have just completely misunderstood and thought she was doing you a favour? Eg she doesn’t know that U16s are free?

Hairgician · 06/01/2026 15:07

Ive already told her they get it free. Any other requests ive ignored, like this one today.
I wont be giving her any receipts anyway as they arent hers.
Sil can be really over involved and overbearing re dc. I know shes itching to get buying them glasses 'to ease the financial side.' And my money is on that being what she wants.

OP posts:
Bobiverse · 06/01/2026 15:11

You’re still not explaining. What is she planning to claim it under? And what other receipts has she asked for?

It’s a really weird way to behave. Why would she want to ease your financial situation? Is she offering to pay for the glasses or is she wanting to claim the money back from someone else?

How do you claim back?

also be warned literally one frame and lens are free!

TinyCottageGirl · 06/01/2026 15:15

So she's trying to do you a favour? You sound a bit ungrateful tbh, just say no thanks they're free and leave it at that if you're not bothered. Maybe she can buy their glasses and claim on insurance/through work as they get older as they are pretty expensive!

Hairgician · 06/01/2026 15:16

Shes wanting receipts from the optician to show they had eye tests/prescriptions to claim back but theres nothing to claim back as they are free anyway, and if she wants in her name that would be wrong as not for her and as pp has said, thats fraud.

both lenses are free, not just one of them 😂

Claim back from where?
If she actually can claim for family members from her insurance then you might want to take advantage of that when they are older. Glasses cost hundreds.

But can you actually explain what you mean by “claim back?”

chunkyBoo · 06/01/2026 15:19

I don’t understand how she’ll claim any money unless it’s Boots vouchers? I doubt she’d get any to be honest as they’re free anyway

To offer once is fine, but to keep asking once told thanks but no is being pushy. We dont need financial aasistance (we are fortunate enough not to, i know thats not the case for other families).

Why is her offering to claim back money for tests (albeit free) an example of her being a CF? At face value, this seems like a generous offer? What's the back story?

Still no idea who she thinks she's claiming from...

Why does your SIL want to "claim it for u"?
What is she wanting to claim back and from whom?
If youve explained childrens glasses are NHS what is your SIL talking about?
Sorry if ive misunderstood, it sounds a bit confusing and strange.

Bobiverse · 06/01/2026 15:24

She’s being a bit weird, especially wanting things in her name when you can’t do that. And she doesn’t seem to listen which is weird and pushy.

But you don’t sound all that with it either, because you keep saying claim back but I think she just wants to pay for them? Because you can’t claim back the cost of stuff… from where? And you don’t have an answer so maybe you’ve misunderstood her.

If she is offering to pay then maybe she thinks she is being nice, and you can just keep saying no and ignoring her. But she isn’t being cheeky. Unless you can explain the claiming back thing, which you’ve been asked repeatedly and ignored.

I know i dont understand, there was nothing to pay so nothing to claim?

I have optical cover on my private medical through work. I can claim back the cost of eye tests and glasses from them.

is this what she means and then she will give you the money?

But

  1. there is no cost
  2. you can only claim for members who are on the policy. I added DH and DD to my policy and pay an extra premium for them but one of the conditions is they live at the same address. She has hardly added your kids to her policy?

Claim back what from whom?

Thanksforyourlackofthought · 06/01/2026 15:26

Hi SIL,
What do you want the receipts for? Nothing for anyone to claim as they are free as both under 16.
