So 2 of my dc have recently been prescribed glasses. Eldest just tested yesterday.
As they are under 16 they get them on nhs so at no/low cost depending on frames.
Eldest is excited to get glasses so was texting sil this morning. Within minutes i get a text from her :
Hi dc1 delighted to b getting glasses..ask them for both his and dc3 to get a receipt under my name (not theirs) so I can claim for it for u...tests and glasses. Thanks xo'

This isnt the first time shes asked about it, ive never took it on, ignored it because theres alterior motive here.

Why would she need it when im not paying anyway?

She’s being a bit weird, especially wanting things in her name when you can’t do that. And she doesn’t seem to listen which is weird and pushy.

But you don’t sound all that with it either, because you keep saying claim back but I think she just wants to pay for them? Because you can’t claim back the cost of stuff… from where? And you don’t have an answer so maybe you’ve misunderstood her.

If she is offering to pay then maybe she thinks she is being nice, and you can just keep saying no and ignoring her. But she isn’t being cheeky. Unless you can explain the claiming back thing, which you’ve been asked repeatedly and ignored.

Im not sure myself, im assuming she means claiming from her private insurance as asked for it in her name, not theirs, but i didnt pay anything for them as free.

Im.assuming its private health care shes talking about claiming from?

private healthcare usually only covers your own children - not nephews and nieces.

Having said that - I'd have some fun with it - send the receipts over to her and let her waste her time or better still get done for fraud.

nopiesleftinthisvehicle · 06/01/2026 15:27

Is she DH's sister or your brother's wife?
No reason to ask other than pure nosiness 😁

Touchie sounds like tushy.

Lightuptheroom · 06/01/2026 15:28

Depending on where she works, they may have insurance or a employee scheme that allows the cost to be claimed back, or she's thinking that your kids would prefer to have something more expense than the under 16 voucher gives? My work covers the cost of an eye test and used to cover a certain amount towards the cost of glasses if its for use on a laptop or similar. But, that's not for family members and not under 16.

WhereYouLeftIt · 06/01/2026 15:28

Hairgician · 06/01/2026 15:07

Ive already told her they get it free. Any other requests ive ignored, like this one today.
I wont be giving her any receipts anyway as they arent hers.
Sil can be really over involved and overbearing re dc. I know shes itching to get buying them glasses 'to ease the financial side.' And my money is on that being what she wants.

All this offering to pay for something that is free - is this a variation of offering help that never materialises?

I've seen people offer help and then not actually help. They get that little glow of satisfaction from making their 'generous' offer, but that little glow completely satisfies them, they then find they don't have to actually follow through to still consider themselves to be 'a good person'. (Think John Dashwood, the brother in 'Sense and Sensibility'.)

Does she get to think of herself as 'a good person' by offering financial help that she absolutely knows for sure she'll never be called on to shell out?

Or, alternately - does she have some sort of scam going on where she somehow claims off insurance for something that nobody paid for?

She's wanting to defraud health insurance?
Because surely she's not entitled to claim on an HSA type policy for glasses for your child?!

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 06/01/2026 15:32

I'm going to guess there's one helluva back story going on here OP?

Your original post is really unclear and makes no sense to me as a long term glasses wearer.

What did she actually mean?

Also you cant do whatever it is that she is asking - it does not work like that.

Ive no idea! But there was nothing to pay so why does she need it?

Both dc chose their own frames, eldest is 12 so would have been happy to pay towards his if he wanted a more expensive frame (within reason cos he can be careless with stuff) but there were suitable styles in the free range and found one he liked.

I have medical cover I can claim for dental and optical for it only covers my DH and my children. The claim receipts have to be in our own names.
When my children were under 16 there was no claim as free.
Also asking the opticians to put another name on is receipts, no opticians should do that.

Mrsclausemunchingonamincepie · 06/01/2026 15:41

She wants to tell people she paid for your dc's glasses...
She wants to be able to flash a receipt in her name.

Hairgician · 06/01/2026 15:19

To offer once is fine, but to keep asking once told thanks but no is being pushy. We dont need financial aasistance (we are fortunate enough not to, i know thats not the case for other families).

@TinyCottageGirl I am
not sure offering to commit
insurance fraud is a favour to the
OP 🙃

BashfulClam · 06/01/2026 15:43

I have a private plan though my work where I can claim medical expenses and optical and dental are included. It was great last year as I got 10 sessions with a private physio. My work pays for it and I am taxed slightly (£50 do I make sure to claim £59 minimum a year lol)

Silverbirchleaf · 06/01/2026 15:43

So she has a cash back plan, where you can submit invoices for dentists, opticians etc and get the money back.

But as others have said, there’s nothing to claim back for, and some companies like the name of tge policy holder on the receipt, which would foil her plans.

wandererofthekingdom · 06/01/2026 15:45

We have a policy we make claims for my childs glasses under as not everything is covered on the NHS, only certain frames are covered by NHS and they don't cover thinning so we always end up getting about £100 back through the policy.
She'd be committing fraud though as they aren't her children.

If she has private health care she might get a pay out for any free NHS treatment that SHE receives.

My family member had private insurance and had surgery privately for a condition that causes pain and won't get better alone but that the NHS will only operate if it 'ruptures' and becomes life and death. They where scheduled for surgery several months away as it wasn't 'urgent' condition. Their health insurance then stated if it ruptures and they have NHS emergency surgery prior to receiving their private surgery they get paid the full cost of what the private surgery would have cost in 'compensation'.

I didn't believe it at first but read their contract and it was correct. It's not the NHS that gets paid any money for the surgery its the patient, as they are the one with the insurance policy so they get free NHS surgery and also a pay out in lieu of private surgery.

Although that didn't happen, they had their private scheduled surgery with no complications luckily. Thing is though it ONLY applies to the named people on the policy, there is no way to fraudulently claim someone else's medical records. These things are pretty tight and insurance will be looking out for those cases.

outerspacepotato · 06/01/2026 15:46

Don't send her any of your receipts for your children's medical care. That is private info and this sounds like she's trying to "claim back" money "for you" that she is not entitled to, as the glasses were already covered.

So she's trying to get money using your name and your kid's medical receipts.

Steer well clear. That's shady.

Shes wanting receipts from the optician to show they had eye tests/prescriptions to claim back but theres nothing to claim back as they are free anyway, and if she wants in her name that would be wrong as not for her and as pp has said, thats fraud.

Yeah i get what she wants....

She wants you to give her a receipt so she can claim back under private health insurance.

She presently doesnt understand you dont receive a receipt 😅
Just nod and smile and give her nothing

She may have one of those policies that let you claim the cost of glasses and dentistry. She seems to think if she has a receipt for the cost of someone elses glasses in her name she can claim those costs back.??
Id ask her directly who she is claiming from and why....
