To be grateful to have discovered the mumsnet name board before having my children and giving them “stripper names”

Well excluding my first child who is male so thankfully has a very generic boy name.

But the names I liked for my girls thank god I mumsnet searched them first 😂 there are some brutal opinions on here that I suppose people are thinking irl but too polite to say to your face.

Mumsnet saved my kids from having stripper names or methhead trailer trash names

Never mind dog names, I have a family member whose kids names I think sound like a toddler has been naming their toys 😹

Alfie, Callum, Mason, Kyle...?

Reggie …

I used to deal with en masses pupil data and can confirm that this isn't a myth.

The weirdest name I saw was Ch'ardannay.

I don't know if you pronounce the apostrophe.

I also encountered twin girls once both with the forename Princess.

I genuinely know of a child named Tia Maria.

IncessantNameChanger · 06/01/2026 18:54

Someone said my dd had a chavy name. It's Irish. She also has a Irish surname and has Irish blood in her veins. I'd love to hear them say that out loud in Ireland 😅

So many things to be a snob about including your heritage. Should have called dd Emma Smith so she could get into banking. Dd is feisty and more likely to be a MMA cage fighter so her name suits her

HippoStraw · 06/01/2026 19:06

I’m really not judgey about names. There’s plenty I don’t love the sound of and would never choose, but as a teacher I’ve come across thousands over the years and it’s just cultural and background differences, and doesn’t reflect how the kids or their parents are.

I think 'Stripper-Methhead' has a certain ring to it, but then I gave DS a name often described as a 'brave' choice on here.

It's a classic double-barrelled surname. You'll find many a Persephone Stripper-Methhead gracing the polo clubs of the Home Counties.

Alfie, Callum, Mason, Kyle...?

Jaden, Kaden, Jaxxon . Their future is set by these names.

I genuinely know of a child named Tia Maria.

Do you live in Bromyard. There's a Tia Maria there. Went to school with my children.

Krystalmethany · 06/01/2026 13:54

Chantelle, crystal, destiny etc. There was more but I’ve forgotten. Thank god my first child was male or he’d have been lumbered with a name that teachers apparently see the list and dread meeting the child

I like the name Crystal, I don’t think it’s a stripper type name. Candy, on the other hand. 🤔

Thistimearound · 06/01/2026 19:33

It takes a very rude person to tell a new mother to her face that you hate her child’s name.. but it doesn’t mean people aren’t thinking it.

Like most people, I’ve only ever heard compliments on my DC’s names. That doesn’t mean anything though does it? - I have no idea who actually likes their names. It’s only on anonymous internet forums where you will hear honest opinions, so it is useful. Don’t ask for feedback unless you want to hear it all!

SapphireSeptember · 06/01/2026 14:59

Sapphire and Crystal are gemstone names which were very popular in Edwardian times. I love the name Sapphire (although I'm deeply biased as it's my birthstone.)

These are names are destined for retired sports stars who are now on the Gladiators show on TV.

But it does tell you about their background and culture?

Call your children what you want to call them! I know plenty of Chantelles who are not strippers!

They aren't brain surgeons either though .

I laughed too. But there is evidence that having an unconventional (misspelled or random word) name can be disadvantage. Certainly for jobs.

Be honest. There are four CVs in front of you as a possible temp just for a week's holiday cover:

  • Anna Bodwin
  • Maya Mehta
  • Lizzie McKay
  • Kryystle Kane

Who do you instantly think, nope? Though she might be fantastic in person. Children can be very cruel and recruiters will have their biases.

Having been a recruiter in my time, I'd be looking at their qualifications and experience to see whether they would be able to walk in and get the job done for a week. I might then look at their ages as in my industry, a lot of highly-qualified people have no nuts-and-bolts experience, whereas other people can be qualified by decades of experience, which is far more valuable. I wouldn't particularly consider their names at all.

What are the brain surgeon names?

Sminty2 · 06/01/2026 19:46

I used to teach in 6th form/FE and a lad joined my physics class. He was named Adonis.

He was 6’ tall, smart and incredibly beautiful to look at.

I’ve always admired his mother’s bravery.

I am now intrigued what MN would make of my top 10 names. All regional.
Girls: Rosenwyn, Elowen, Kelynen, Kerenza, Caja

Boys: Kynan, Senen, Piran, Riordan, Torin

So do I. She has a brother, he's called Jack Daniel. I'm not kidding.

Well thank goodness some of us live in more enlightened places where no-one actually gives a stuff about names. I've worked with people with all sorts of names which would horrify MNers, so the recruiters obviously didn't get the memo.

Elowen and Kerenza are lovely.

I’ve taught two Kynans and a Torin.

I really like some of those and, if there’s a regional connection, that’s nice too

Elowen and Kerenza are lovely.

Which region? I taught a Torin about 10 years ago in Hertfordshire, but it was considered quite unusual! I love that name ❤️

I’m in the South West.

OneLilacHare · 06/01/2026 20:29

Torin and Riodan are Irish for my father's side of the family. The rest are Cornish because I am. My husband is adopted Cornish.
