To be grateful to have discovered the mumsnet name board before having my children and giving them “stripper names”

Well excluding my first child who is male so thankfully has a very generic boy name.

But the names I liked for my girls thank god I mumsnet searched them first 😂 there are some brutal opinions on here that I suppose people are thinking irl but too polite to say to your face.

Mumsnet saved my kids from having stripper names or methhead trailer trash names

@KitWyn you are spot on with the spelling. My instant reaction when reading those was to think less of the wrong spelling name, like I mentally eye roll and say 'ffs'. Which is quite shameful actually because I work with young people and we have done a heap of training on inclusion. One thing that's flagged in our anti bias training is to identify and articulate your own biases, they are deep and often unconscious, so this might be one to work on for me.

Surprised by Callum. Thought it was an OK name.

I think Mason, Kyle, and Mason are OK too.

I guess your kids have to be called Pythagoras, Balonz, Jimothy, Felicitina, Jimberley, Hugo, Peregrine, Sebastian, or Jonty, or some kind of Mumsnet-accepted name. 🙄

I got told dds name sounded like a boat. Always stuck with me and concluded actually that is no bad thing. Rather a boat than stripper I say.

Kanu? 🛶
Dinghi?
Trawla?
😉

I laughed too. But there is evidence that having an unconventional (misspelled or random word) name can be disadvantage. Certainly for jobs.

Be honest. There are four CVs in front of you as a possible temp just for a week's holiday cover:

  • Anna Bodwin
  • Maya Mehta
  • Lizzie McKay
  • Kryystle Kane

Who do you instantly think, nope? Though she might be fantastic in person. Children can be very cruel and recruiters will have their biases.

I wouldn't automatically think no to any of them based on their name because the name is the last thing I would look at on someone's CV. And I hope I'm not that shallow anyway.

A dm I know has Skye, Star and River..
She is a feisty woman and the kids are bloody fab.

Is Sapphire not one of the gemstone names that became popular 125 years ago in Edwardian times? - along with Ruby, Pearl, Beryl, Emerald, Jade, Amber etc

I very much doubt Jade and Amber were popular in the Edwardian era. In Victorian times, the word "jade" used to refer to a 'lady of the night'.

I doubt "Amber" was used much then.

Ophelia is classed as a posh name, but all anyone is ever going to associate it with is Taylor Swift now. 😆

Imagine! I was just trying to guess names of naughty boys...to be fair I've taught nice boys with all of those names.
Plus I taught a really delightful girl called Krystle

Well yeah. A few girls at my DCs unis didn't have Mumsnet apporved names, and they did fine. Good degrees and successful careers.

I'm talking Kylie, Paris, Taylor, Harmony, and Tilly.

And lads. (She knew a Tyler, a Riley, a Mason, and a few more with similar-ish names.) All nice people, and also went on to be successful/have a good degree.

takealettermsjones · 06/01/2026 16:10

I also thought Alfie was well thought of - one of those old/new names like Archie, Elsie, etc!

Yes, me too.

OutieModeOn · 06/01/2026 16:24

I've only known one stripper. Her name was Catherine. Like the Princess 😂🫣

True. I had an A level group with a Lola, Callum and Tyler among the usual Issy, Eva, Lily and Oliver. Lola got into Cambridge.

Nice attempt at being cool and edgy Wink but NO-ONE is going to immediately think of a song that didn't even make the top 60 in the charts 50 years ago, (that 99.9% of people have never heard,) by a band most people under 65 have never heard of.

EVERYONE is going to think TAYLOR SWIFT.

Sorry and all that. 😆

Our DD has a stripper name. I really regret it and commented to a colleague how much I dislike it. She was offended because it's her DD name.
OTOH, dd loves it. She's a fierce young woman, multiple tattoos and piercings and has recently graduated with a first class honours masters in Maths

Sorry to be a pedant, but you can’t get a ‘first class honours Masters’. You can get a distinction though. (Unless it was a 4 year undergrad degree in Scotland…)

My dad knew a Jonty. He and another family member were both John so one used Jonty and one used his middle name as the family was heaving with men called John.
Edited to say Jonty was a perfectly nice bloke, apparently.

Well it didn't do Lizzy Bennet any harm in Pride and Prejudice in the 1790s when Jane Austen wrote it - have you seen her birth certificate? Lizzie might be her legal name - it's been around as a name a long time.

It has been common practice for hundreds of years to use names that many people get very precious about as "nicknames" on MN when they are clutching their pearls in 2025.

Take "Annie" for example
My grandmother was named Annie in the early 1900s - it is written on her birth certificate
Annie was the 47th most popular name in England in 1850
But mention on MN that you are thinking of calling your child Annie and there will be a huge pile on that it's not a "proper" name

(Lizzy was a top 200 name in 1850)

In P&P her real name is Elizabeth Lizzy is her nick name. I'm not sure if Kitty is Kitty or Katherine though

I only really think of Lola as a stripper name (due to the Barry Manilow song). I guess all strippers can't be called Lola though or it would get confusing...

(you may know of course, but...)
In Spanish-speaking countries, Lola is a very common diminutive of Dolores (itself a fairly standard name with religious roots -meaning 'pains' or 'sorrows', alluding to Jesus's mum, who I don't think was a stripper 😂)

You can - in some subjects you can do a four year undergrad with masters in England, which gives an honours result for the whole thing. My DH has one.

honeylulu · 06/01/2026 16:30

I have known a Sapphire and a Crystal and they were both lovely (and I thought the names were pretty not trashy).

I once knew a stripper/escort who had the unremarkable name of Paula. And a burlesque performer called Lisa (different stage name though!)

Unfortunately I named both my kids before discovering mumsnet and finding that i had given them "dog's names". Oh well, Fido and Rover don't seem to mind that much.

also took an instant dislike to Anna Bodwin... sounds like the kind of woman who puts post-it notes on the communal fridge.
I'll microwave fish if I want to, Anna!

Exactly! And that’s why names really matter 😂
