To be grateful to have discovered the mumsnet name board before having my children and giving them “stripper names”

Well excluding my first child who is male so thankfully has a very generic boy name.

But the names I liked for my girls thank god I mumsnet searched them first 😂 there are some brutal opinions on here that I suppose people are thinking irl but too polite to say to your face.

Mumsnet saved my kids from having stripper names or methhead trailer trash names

This made me 😁

Important to note though that MN is a hive of classism and deep snobbery, which seems to be completely acceptable on here in a way that no other “ism” is. I’m sure your chosen names were lovely 😁

Mrsclausemunchingonamincepie · 06/01/2026 13:49

My dd has a classic stripper name.
She is a bloody feisty young woman.
No regrets with her name.

Marmaladelover · 06/01/2026 13:50

Is wondering what these names are……

MarxistMags · 06/01/2026 13:51

Oh do tell please !

Lollylavender · 06/01/2026 13:51

I’m actually glad I named my kids before joining mumsnet! Here anything unusual is discouraged. My dc have rare names that they and we love - on Mumsnet these names apparently lead them bullying Hmm

Isekaied · 06/01/2026 13:52

Hope you've avoided place names too.

OnlyAfterwards · 06/01/2026 13:53

I think 'Stripper-Methhead' has a certain ring to it, but then I gave DS a name often described as a 'brave' choice on here.

Chantelle, crystal, destiny etc. There was more but I’ve forgotten. Thank god my first child was male or he’d have been lumbered with a name that teachers apparently see the list and dread meeting the child

Alfie, Callum, Mason, Kyle...?

ImFineItsAllFine · 06/01/2026 13:56

On MN you lose regional name norms and trends though. There's a whole bunch of names that come up on every MN baby name that I've literally never seen anyone use in RL. and other local po;ular names that MN deems weird/try-hard/boring/dated.

it's got ruder on here though, the expression used on MN always used to be 'stage name'.

FleurDeFleur · 06/01/2026 13:57

Krystalmethany · 06/01/2026 13:55

Oh and sapphire

One of the nicest girls I ever taught was called Sapphire. Just delightful.

Isekaied · 06/01/2026 13:52

Hope you've avoided place names too.

Apart from Scunthorpe.

Turmerictea · 06/01/2026 13:58

😂 I'd not heard the expression but I totally get what they mean.
My own name is a trashy name... no one has ever thought I was a stripper/page 3/playboy bunny

I was however concerned with my DD having a "love island name" 😁

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 06/01/2026 13:59

It rather depends whose opinion you value. DH tends to dismiss a lot of boys names as ‘hairdresser names’. He can’t explain his reasoning or his categorisation. Luckily no one listens to him on names!

If your circles are happy with Tiffany and Crystal, why not stick with them?
My circles might like Audrey and Meredith, your circles may hate them.

Some of my niblings have names I associate with old people’s homes, but their family love them. My opinion is irrelevant.

Garroty · 06/01/2026 14:00

The only stripper I know is called Sarah 😄

KitWyn · 06/01/2026 14:02

I laughed too. But there is evidence that having an unconventional (misspelled or random word) name can be disadvantage. Certainly for jobs.

Be honest. There are four CVs in front of you as a possible temp just for a week's holiday cover:

  • Anna Bodwin
  • Maya Mehta
  • Lizzie McKay
  • Kryystle Kane

Who do you instantly think, nope? Though she might be fantastic in person. Children can be very cruel and recruiters will have their biases.

Alfie, Callum, Mason, Kyle...?

His name has never been criticised on here and is even sometimes mentioned as a good name. Amazing because I was only 16 and hadn’t discovered mumsnet yet.
I also saw “teen mum name” used as an insult for a girl name I once liked 😂

Might be an urban myth but I've heard of Ledasha spelt Le-a

Mydogisagentleman · 06/01/2026 14:12

Our DD has a stripper name. I really regret it and commented to a colleague how much I dislike it. She was offended because it's her DD name.
OTOH, dd loves it. She's a fierce young woman, multiple tattoos and piercings and has recently graduated with a first class honours masters in Maths

Is it wrong that I thought Anna Bodwin would be a right know it all pain? I think we all have preconceptions of names that don't necessarily make sense.

This is so true. MN taught me that my lovely Gaelic name is ‘made up’, and also a man’s name, which was news to me and the many other Scottish women with my name.
It’s also witchy, and unpleasant, and harsh apparently!

Never in all my years on MN have I come across the term 'stage name'.

Didn't take long ffs. Made up and racist.

takealettermsjones · 06/01/2026 14:15

Well sure, but I live in a no-nonsense northern town and I don't think Crystal or Sapphire would even register as strange really... Ottilie or Clementine absolutely would, though!
