Norovirus, food poisoning or pregnancy morning sickness?

I am 9 weeks pregnant and trying to figure out if I’ve currently got norovirus or pregnancy food poisining (rare steak) or if this is ‘normal’ pregnancy related sickness. I’ve never been pregnant before and so far I’ve had periods of nausea but no actual sickness until the past week. It’s strange that I seemed to recover by yesterday only for D&V to begin again last night.
Sorry in advance for graphic details!

31st Dec - vomiting all morning, fine by afternoon (likely just pregnancy sickness)
1st/2nd Jan - totally normal
3rd Jan - went to a celebration lunch, ate a lot, including steak, cheese, chocolate (I know I shouldn’t have had steak pregnant, big mistake). Started vomiting and diarrhoea in the evening which lasted 14 hours, very intense on both ends, a lot of bile, retching and pain
2nd - D&V all morning. Queasy for the rest of the day but no further D&V.
3rd - queasy all day and low on energy but no D&V. Then woke in the middle of the night to intense vomiting & diarrhoea
4th - queasy in the day so far no D&V

  1. How many other people at the celebration lunch are vomiting or is it just you?
  2. How many times have you, or someone you know, been ill from food poisoning after eating steak?

if the answer to 1 is just you, it's likely morning sickness, which can be any time of day and night and last...a while.

I think food poisoning is usually over in a couple of days isn't it? In any case, if you're worried, call the doctors.

I wouldn’t think this is morning sickness, given the diarrhoea. I know some women get it a bit but you’ve described it as quite severe.

I’d assume a bug. How have you been since the 4th?

fashionqueen0123 · 06/01/2026 11:46

Bad sickness in pregnancy doesn’t cause diarrhoea. I mean you can get that as a symptom in pregnancy but it’s not really usually linked. If anything many women get badly constipated. So this sounds more like a bug or food poisoning.

If nobody else is sick then likely a bug but I don't think the D part of D&V is likely to be pregnancy-related.

I think it sounds more like a bug / food poisoning.
I had severe sickness in pregnancy for the entire 40 weeks but it never involved diarrhoea.

Sorry I messed up the dates. The 4th, should be the 6th - today. @ShesTheAlbatross

@DrowningInThings1. No one else but I thought rare steak can cause pregnancy food poisoning 2. None!

Thanks everyone, the fact that people think it’s a bug is making me feel validated in being off work. It was the fact I’ve had 36 hours of no D&V and then it’s come back that made me worry that maybe this is just pregnancy life?! But seems it’s just an extended bug

Sounds like a bug. The hormones that cause morning sickness also cause constipation not diarrhea.

No, pregnancy doesn’t make you more at risk of getting food poisoning. It’s that food poisoning can be more dangerous if you’re pregnant.
