Children have been seen putting their full body weight on icy ponds and large paddling pools.

It was only a few years ago that 4 boys died out playing on the ice.
Babbs Mill Lake 2022. 11 December for anyone whose forgotten. Two brothers, a cousin and another boy died.

Parents please remember to warn your children of the dangers of ice. Better still go out with them and watch them.

It might look fun, but its not and its bloody cold.

Kids and teenagers are repeatedly warned by their parents and teachers, but sadly some won't listen.

Parents were seen with their kids at a local park letting them do it.

Yes, there are bad parents everywhere?

But by and large, kids are warned but they don't always listen.

justaddittothelist · 05/01/2026 16:11

Oh this makes me so anxious. I will be drumming this into my DC when they are old enough to play out without me.

But unfortunately kids will do silly things and peer pressure can come into it as well.

For parents to be there and allowing it is just ridiculous OP. YANBU

I think those public information films should be brought back. And shown in assemblies at school. To show children the dangers.

People are so thick and / or irresponsible.

I watched parents yesterday let their kids go into the middle of frozen lakes on a local common.

The water in the middle is over the head height of a small child, a child who fell through could slip under, and even if quickly rescued a child submerged in freezing water and comes out in freezing soaking wet clothing is at risk from hypothermia, after shock etc, and was 10 minutes walk to the road and the car.

And of course in another part of the same ice teens were smashing it, presumably increasing the chance of cracks.

Agree. We have been out walking today by a frozen lake, I let my son (who is 7) smash a shallow piece of ice where there was no danger of falling in and told him to dip his hand in. The shock when he get the cold will have hopefully cemented the lecture I gave him today and throne his dad did yesterday.

We open water swim so he is very water conscious but I’ll take any chance for a reminder.

I feel the same every year when I see children (both alone and with adults) dodging waves. Just days ago three people lost their lives, yet I saw someone doing it yesterday.

Electricsausages · 05/01/2026 18:45

And those are the parents who will bleat that theres mo warning signs or life belts
to say don’t swim in here

IfIwasabluebird · 05/01/2026 18:47

Some parents are thick, reckless, do things "for a laugh" and don't pay any attention to the school or news.

Was just going to comment the same thing. People sadly take too many risks.
