Napkins are rationed now?

Right I've just sat down in my local coffee shop. Server put a serviette on the tray, and I went to my table. My coffee stopped in the saucer so I went back to ask for more napkins. It's one per customer now apparently. She eventually begrudgingly gave me some more when I told her it had spilt. Is this a thing? I just paid £4 for an americano, I'd like more than one napkin!

Theres no legal requirement on the number of napkins a coffee shop can give you.

Have you got something nice planned to do today after the coffee shop?

Did they not have blue roll or paper towels for spills?
It would be more effective than thin napkins

PhantomOfAllKnowledge · 04/01/2026 10:13

I can understand why they don't want people taking handfuls of them - it's a waste and in normal circumstances you don't need more than one (and it's not the coffee shop's responsibility to provide you with emergency tissues for the day much as we might all have done this at some point 😃).

However, if there's been a spillage, obviously they should ungrudgingly help you deal with it.

So YABU to expect unlimited napkins generally but YANBU to expect help with a spillage.

I think a lot of places are quite rightly trying to cut back on waste, napkins can't be recycled.

I carry a packet of pocket sized tissues to cover this.

No need for the patronising thanks

Your americano already costs £4. As much as you think napkins cost nothing, it's cutting outgoings that stops your coffee from getting even more expensive.

Actually they didn't even offer this. Will ask next time if it happens!

Napkins aren’t free though, they are a cost like everything else, if everyone grabs 5 then they are paying out 5 times more than necessary. One napkin is fine for a drink, in fact you don’t really need any for just a drink (you needed a cloth ). I buy napkins for work, the cheap ones were £1 for 100 but in October the pack was reduced to 75 and not change in price!

i watched a couple take all the napkins from the dispenser in mcdonald’s and put them in a plastic bag to take home. The staff then gave them more!!!

They appeared to live in a local facility. i guess it didn’t provide toilet roll.
