To feel so sad about getting rid of Christmas decorations

Powerups · 03/01/2026 21:30

Every year it’s the same, I spend all year looking forward to Christmas so much, planning my decorations and making it beautiful and so twinkly and festive. Every single room has the magic of Christmas,

I love how my home feels and looks at Christmas yet today have started packing it all away and feel so terrible, the excitement and twinkly lights are gone, my home feels bare and I feel really sad.

I do recognise that there are far worse things going on In the world and this is a bit trivial in the grand scheme of things but wondered if anyone else feels the same and any advice to help with the post Christmas blues?

I leave fairy lights up in the living room till the clocks change as I find it too depressing.

We dont have much extra space so I don’t mind to get rid of all Christmassy extras. We usually put the tree up in the middle of December and by 5th January I’ve had enough. But I can see your point of view - Christmas tree, lights and other decorations do make a difference.
Can you leave lights and get something nice for the house? A few cushions here and there or a new vase.
And maybe put your tree up a bit earlier next year?

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I daren't put my Christmas decorations up any earlier (they start to go up mid November) it takes me 2 weeks to put them all up. It’s all very tasteful and co-ordinated but I hear you on leaving some lights up! Thank you x

Before we know it, there'll be summer holidays to be disappointed by !

KimberleyClark · 03/01/2026 22:16

My tree and decorations are still up. We went away for New Year to a cottage in west Wales - left 27th and got back this afternoon - and it was so nice not coming back to a bare house. We were late putting them up this year and never take them down before 12th night in any case.

Thank you all for taking the time to respond…it’s lovely to hear that I’m not on my own, and a lot of you feel the same…sometimes it’s knowing you’re not on your own that helps!

I love the ideas of adding fairy lights back in which i absolutely will do, and others suggestions of reframing it as a fresh start.

Thank you so much ☺️

I hate the dark nights so like to leave the lights up but they’ll be coming down tomorrow. I’ve had them up since mid December and we have to move forward.

Why? Planning to leave my lights and tree up another month at least to get us through the dark of winter. Love curling up with a book looking at my tree when the nights are dark and long.

Keeping all our lights and tree up, maybe take down Santa things but anything winter based is staying!

NessShaness · 03/01/2026 22:50

I felt the same taking mine down.

I really love my tree and decorations, one of my favourite things about December is coming down for my morning coffee and sitting quietly next to the twinkly lights.

It is nice to have a lovely clean house though, I have lots of candles that I light in the evenings and I’ve treated myself to some beautiful flowers today which have helped.

ISeeYouHere · 03/01/2026 22:51

Same, I need to get some more lighting for my living room, it will seem awfully dark without the Christmas decorations!

Cantwaitforchristmas2026 · 03/01/2026 22:53

Feel exactly the same OP. Took ours down today and felt blue. However I ordered a new lamp to change the look of the lounge. Then left some fairy lights up above the fireplace to keep the twinklyness! Definitely made a difference and I spent the evening admiring the lounge!

TrentCrimmsflowinglocks · 03/01/2026 22:55

Me too. I don’t mind taking the tree down and I’m happy to get the space back. But I miss all the fairy lights everywhere in Jan. It’s such a dark and shitty month, I wish people would keep the lights up longer.

2 weeks!!! It sounds like you are putting a lot of work into decorating, no wonder that you are sad to remove it. It’s like to part with your work of art.

Sweetnessandbite · 04/01/2026 00:39

I was just thinking how my tree still looks brand new. Hasn't wilted at all and also feel sad that we are part of this beautiful tree being cut as it is so perfect. If I knew how to root it I would.

SeaGlassDreamer · 04/01/2026 00:45

I relate and feel sad. We had such a lovely Christmas this year and now it’s over and back to reality. I always feel melancholy at Christmas time and become very aware of the passing of time.

TappyGilmore · 04/01/2026 00:48

I’m in the middle of taking mine down, and have sat down for a 5 minute rest while I do it! I quite like them coming down actually, makes everything seem so much more spacious and less cluttered.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 04/01/2026 00:54

I have a lot of candles and lamps for the winter evenings. If you're wary of naked flames, the battery operated tru glow candles look realistic enough if you don't look too closely. I've got a cluster of assorted sized ones and a remote control to switch them all on and off simultaneously.

Also daffodils are already available. I've got four vases of those already, as they are so cheerful

Keep them up for longer if you want to. It's only 10 Lords a Leaping today so 2 days till 12th night. And keeping lights up till Candelmas in February is a thing too if you want it to be.

I keep lights up until the clocks go forward.

dottiedodah · 04/01/2026 08:16

We keep our lights up to February. No laws against it! A good hoover and dust and Christmas cards down .makes me feel better .Its a long month in January so snuggle down and relax.9

daffodilandtulip · 04/01/2026 08:27

Me too. I miss the twinkles and the cosiness. I miss lighting my advent candles each morning. All the excitement. Even more so now it means that uni kids have gone back again.

I've put some fairy lights up though, and kept some greenery arrangements. I'm looking forward to a couple of nights of binge watching by the fire before I go back to work, now the house is quiet.

daffodilandtulip · 04/01/2026 08:31

Iknowdino · 03/01/2026 21:43

Ahh me too!! The tree still looks lovely and I enjoy having the lovely lights and all the pretty decorations around. Our house is pretty souless without Christmas decs! We have nothing fun around. Also.... Thought it a good idea to put 500 snowflake stickers on every window in the house and they need picking off, so sad about that cos it's gonna take ages and I cba

I used paint pens. Some may still be there next year.

CarlaH · 04/01/2026 08:50

Our tree has been kept watered and still looks quite perky so we are planning to try and keep it up until Candlemas.

We will take everything else down though on Tuesday.

LifeOfBriony · 04/01/2026 10:53

I’m with you, OP. I took all the cards down yesterday and the trees will be done today (we have a small one in our dining room which is lovely too). We have to rearrange our front room to make room for the tree but I’m leaving putting it back until next weekend, and will clean and hoover as I go. It looks so bare when the decorative are down but I have found that this two-stage approach is less depressing.

Im back at work tomorrow and have been dreading that since Friday.

❤to all who feel the same.

In Poland they keep them up until Candlemas. Wonderful to arrive in Krakow to find all the trees & lights still up. Blew away the January blues
