To ask if you have nice office suitable boots that don't slip on the ice

Pavementworrier · 02/01/2026 12:39

Is this impossible? Am I doomed to changing when I get there?

(DM Chelsea boots with arctic grip or whatever it's called is brilliant but they're not smart enough for work)

Wear the boots you have to the office and change into "smart" ones when you get there.

You said in your op about changing when you get there, so there must be somewhere to leave them. Where do you leave your bag/coat?

HarbourClankCat · 02/01/2026 15:37

I have some Rocket Dog boots that do the trick. I tend to be smart office and outdoor based so bought them for just this purpose. Take a look they have a few designs and different grips.

Following this thread with interest. I walk to work (health condition prevents me from driving). I dread the ice. Thanks

Get Yak Trax to put over footwear

ThisElatedShark · 02/01/2026 15:57

Probably not smart enough for what you want (my office is very chilled!) but I have these and love them. Very comfy, and decent grip. Lasting a long time too. www.elnaturalista.com/uk/en/ankle-boots-woman-nido-n722

TidyCyan · 02/01/2026 16:01

What sort of "smart"? 1990s next suit separates or anything that's not denim and trainers?

If you want what I would call traditional office wear boots they'll get pretty quickly wrecked in ice, rain and snow. I wear Docs and if I had to would change in-office.

Have a look at Bareback boots. I've got the Quebec ones https://www.barebackfootwear.com/products/quebec-waterproof-brown?variant=8121388957784&country=GB&currency=GBP&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=17417985736&gclid=Cj0KCQiA9t3KBhCQARIsAJOcR7yRW5erKbJYnPr5sK7Q36K-alx04CgRMOp1YyGIUZzCt3HFfFfv3MQaAs-8EALw_wcB

But there are other styles and shorter versions. I originally got them to wear as wellies as I have really flat feet and normal wellies aren't structured enough to support, but I actually wear them for all sorts of outdoor walking as they are stylish enough to pass for "normal" boots. They go under bootleg/wide trousers/ long skirt and over skinny trousers/ leggings. Totally waterproof and very grippy on ice and rough terrain.

I had no idea they were meant for horsey folk until they arrived and the delivery now said something like "ideal for your morning stable work". I suppose the name should have given me a clue ...

I bought my husband some of these for Christmas. He hasn't used them yet but nice to know they are good!

They’re great. I’m in north of Scotland so we do often get icy weather, and it’s brilliant to be walking as normal when out with dog or on school run when everyone else is penguin walking on the ice! I’m surprised they aren’t more common here, I’ve had to explain them to people quite often!

I got them as a gift from relatives in the states about a decade ago who get quite severe winters and I get them out several times a year at least!

You are needing a pair of Permagrip. Only £19.99 from Timpsons

I have to watch this clip every time it appears on my screen. It’s so good.

Needless to say I live in Northern Scotland too

Currently we have a blizzard.

We are thick with snow too. Kids delighted! Will be getting the Yak Trax out when it all goes to shit and freezes over in time for school going back on Monday.

Pavementworrier · 02/01/2026 17:04

Yax trax are unfortunately no good for city ice/black ice, only for proper deep snow and ice (and they are dangerous if you forget to take them off once inside)

OP posts:
Clefable · 02/01/2026 17:07

I’ve used them on icy pavements and black ice fine, they work great on both. That’s my most usual use case for them, treacherous pavements on school run! Even on patchy ice, they are fine on pavement, just clicky on bits without ice on.

And they aren’t really dangerous inside, they are noisy for sure but you just take them off before you go inside, you quickly notice you’ve got them on as they are very clicky and feel odd!

I use them for city ice. And yes, I always make sure to remove them before getting on a bus or going indoors. My own preference is for snow boots with added Yak Trax. Belt and braces.

Keep warm and upright everyone. (Never got the hang of penguin walking)

I've never understood the mentality of "it's bad weather... I'll wear a pair of fashion boots I haven't worn for months" surely it makes more sense to have a decent pair of shoes or waterproof trainers and carry work shoes just for the couple of days of snow?

I don't want to heave shoes around with me all day. I just want smart non slip shoes.
