Rude? Stayed for less than an hour for a meal

I am looking after a neighbour’s dog whilst she is away. I saw my other neighbours and said Happy New Year to them. As took
the dog out Said were being picked up by SIL for NYD meal. They live about 10 min drive from here.

Went back about an hour and a quarter later, taking dog back to its home to see the other neighbours being dropped off by the SIL. They said they had a meal with DD and family.

This means that they spent less than an hour. Literally sat to the table then left when last mouthful was finished. That seems rude and rushed

Weird that you're bothered, or in the slightest bit interested. Perhaps something cropped up.

vanillalattes · 01/01/2026 16:18

What on earth does it have to do with you?

VikaOlson · 01/01/2026 16:19

Someone totally unrelated to you spent an hour with their family (also unrelated to you) for a meal? No that's not 'rude'.

101Alsatians · 01/01/2026 16:19

What, sorry?I think I've missed something here

TheMorgenmuffel · 01/01/2026 16:20

They visited for an hour and ate while they chatted.

Its fine.

Why are you bothered? Has anyone come to you upset about it? Said anything to make you think they were unhappy or it wasnt what they all agreed and wanted?

Arlanymor · 01/01/2026 16:21

Other people had a meal with other people on their own terms - which you didn't attend - and somehow that's rude? We don't all take hours to eat.

LonginesPrime · 01/01/2026 16:21

You have no idea what happened - how can you possibly judge whether it was rudeness, an argument, someone’s health issue, someone needing to travel or work, or any other reason that could cause a meal to be short?

You don’t even know if this timing was pre-arranged or not. It might just be how that family does things.

LizzieSiddal · 01/01/2026 16:22

The fact your brain has gone “they went out and came back an hour later, isn’t that awful” points to a lack of critical thinking.

Sharpzebra · 01/01/2026 16:22

What's it got to do with you lol

Didimum · 01/01/2026 16:22

I struggle to comprehend how this would bother anyone, let alone making a forum thread about it.

Toottooot · 01/01/2026 16:23

Ca see fit it’s got ti dee wi yi?

Bones75 · 01/01/2026 16:24

And?

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 01/01/2026 16:26

Wow, mind your own business. It's mad that anyone could possibly care about this. Find something else to occupy your time.

Christmaseree · 01/01/2026 16:28

Weirdest thread ever.

Grumpynan · 01/01/2026 16:30

I know you’re getting a lot of flack for your comment, but I do get what you’re saying. When I invite people for Sunday lunch I would expect them to arrive 12ish and leave 3ish. Chat and drink before dinner hour or so to eat then coffee after. I suppose family might pop in and grab a quick bite but that’s different

I remember a few years ago I was working in the front garden early evening and the neighbours came out all dressed up. Explained they had been invited out for dinner at a new very very posh restaurant locally. We lived there 15 years and never went there I’m talking loads of money. Of they went, an hour or so later they came back, yes it was lovely had a nice time etc I think that’s very odd myself.

redskydelight · 01/01/2026 16:33

I think it's fine just to pop in for a quick meal and a chat if it's family that you live near and (presumably) see frequently.

If it was a friend they'd not seen in ages, and they'd travelled a couple of hours to get there then yes, definitely rude.

101Alsatians · 01/01/2026 16:34

Are you worried about the dog's tense family dynamic perhaps?Or maybe...wished you'd been invited to the meal after dogsitting?

Mercurysinretrograde · 01/01/2026 16:38

Hmm, maybe get a hobby?

piano55 · 01/01/2026 16:43

“Had a meal with DD and family”

Maybe they just went out for fast food or something? Each to their own etc…

CaptainMyCaptain · 01/01/2026 16:43

I thought this was going to be about your guests rushing off after a meal but it's actually nothing to do with you. Also, the dog plays no part in this story so why mention it?

Read the OP

They're different neighbours

We all speculate, I think - it's human nature to be curious. But starting a thread on Mumsnet about it is weird, mate.

Forthwith81 · 01/01/2026 16:47

I do love that you have created an entire scenario in your head, that they "literally sat to the table then left when last mouthful was finished." 😅 You weren't there, you have no idea what happened, and it doesn't concern you in the least.
