Rude? Stayed for less than an hour for a meal

I am looking after a neighbour’s dog whilst she is away. I saw my other neighbours and said Happy New Year to them. As took
the dog out Said were being picked up by SIL for NYD meal. They live about 10 min drive from here.

Went back about an hour and a quarter later, taking dog back to its home to see the other neighbours being dropped off by the SIL. They said they had a meal with DD and family.

This means that they spent less than an hour. Literally sat to the table then left when last mouthful was finished. That seems rude and rushed

OP posts:

I would be more concerned about the poor dog being left home alone with someone only popping in occasionally to walk/feed it.

FuzzyWolf · 01/01/2026 17:34

It’s quite possible that the intention had always been to have a quick meal, yet you are judging for something you know nothing about.

RunningJo · 01/01/2026 17:37

Christ alive, what have I just read. OP I think you need a hobby 🤣

notenoughcaffeine · 01/01/2026 17:41

Who the actual fuck cares 😂😂

Hesma · 01/01/2026 17:47

What’s rude is your timing and judging them. Fort goodness sake, get a life 🤣

lifeonmars100 · 01/01/2026 17:55

Personally I would not have given it a moment's thought let alone gone online and posted about it.

Manxexile · 01/01/2026 16:44

Read the OP

They're different neighbours

I did indeed and am still none the wiser.

Who would give a shiny in that case?

tigger1001 · 01/01/2026 17:59

My mil did that - not because she was being anti social or rude, but because, due to health issues, she was very uncomfortable at being away from her own home for long. So would come for Christmas meal and be straight away afterwards.

I think OP is using the dog as a cover to case out the neighbours' houses. She is disappointed to discover that "going to SIL's for a meal" only gives her scarcely over an hour of time.

If only they were going to Paris for the holidays there would be much more opportunity.

🤣

Ponoka7 · 01/01/2026 18:03

That seems ideal for a NY day meal, when people are tired, still hung over, wanting to watch football, needing things to finish early because they have work the next day etc. My DD likes us all together and likes to cook. We've often arrived to food being served (we were told times), we eat, chat, say 'Happy whatever ' and go. We have family birthdays in October, November and December, so see each other a lot. When my Mum was in her last years, we'd have a Christmas/Easter/New Year breakfast, then all leave until later. That would have really confused you.

Ecrire · 01/01/2026 18:04

This has really hurt my head.

Sunandfrost · 01/01/2026 18:06

Mumsnet has really dropped in quality lately....

Alwaysalert · 01/01/2026 18:07

And it's your business because...?

carlchem · 01/01/2026 18:07

What the fuck has it got to do with you?

And maybe do dry January.

Agree. I cannot be the only one struggling to understand the OP.

Sounds like a stream of consciousness with irrelevant people drifting in and out.

This is the oddest post I've seen for a while.

Blisterinthe · 01/01/2026 18:17

You’d be outraged that my brother came to my house for cake and arrived, ate the cake and left in under 15 minutes.
We weren’t busy and neither was he but my son really wanted to give his uncle some cake and my brother was tired.

And it's only day one of the year!

PInkyStarfish · 01/01/2026 18:26

Rude that the dog only had an hours walk and then had to spend fifteen minutes hiding in a hedge with you whilst you timed the comings and goings of your neighbours.

“Had a meal with DD and family”

Maybe they just went out for fast food or something? Each to their own etc…

Or maybe whilst they were in the car for the 10 minutes drive someone else was busy plating up - you don't even know if it was hot or cold food. Could have been Turkey and chips, Turkey Salad, Turkey sandwiches accompanied by Turkey soup. Who knows? Who cares? Oh! I forgot Doorss does. 😂

hourspassed · 01/01/2026 18:29

Haha this sounds like DH and I. We often go out to eat and we're home within the hour. Nothing wrong with that!

How very very strange that you are judging people based on this! The only rudeness here OP is coming from you.

Alwaysalert · 01/01/2026 18:30

notenoughcaffeine · 01/01/2026 17:41

Doorss does. Keep up.🙄

Wolfpa · 01/01/2026 18:32

Some families are just more efficient than others.

ManyPigeons · 01/01/2026 18:33

Sounds perfect to me. Dinner, an hour’s conversation and then home for bath and bed. The dream!
