AIBU to have gone ballistic of DS16's joint

I was searching DS16's wardrobe and found a bunch of rolled up joints. Initially I assumed they contained weed but upon closer inspection and opening all of them up I realised they were all filled with some kind of herbs. I asked DS to tell me what the herbs are and to show me the where he stores them. The joints were filled with damiana, blue lotus, mullein. AIBU to have gotten very upset at DS16 over smoking? This whole herbal joint idea seems bizarre and I suppose its better than smoking weed or tobacco. Nevertheless smoking of any kind is harmful. How should I punish DS?

I have to say I’d be pretty impressed at his knowledge of herbs. Rather than a bollocking, I’d be asking him what they are, why, for who, what’s the desired effect, how much is he selling them for…is he secretly a medieval witch?

Perfectly reasonable to do as you did. After all you do not want him to be supporting the criminal activity that is the illegal drugs trade, or be in debt to someone which could risk him being attacked.

16 year olds will be 16. You can tell him that he’s not allowed to do X/Y/Z but he will. What are you going to do? Threaten to throw him out?

Please don't go ballistic and punish him. It'll just make all of it more exciting and he'll get better at hiding things from you.

Best to keep the dialogue going at that age, they often want to experiment, best to know what with.

Explain your concerns and what you will tolerate but whatever you do keep the door open. It's never good to push them away but at that age...

When I was 16 it was cool to watch the less bright kids (who couldn't use a library, obviously) tell each other all sorts of poppycock and see them run with it.

Pointless kicking off at him, now he will just hide this better and not talk to you. I’d be doing some reading into the effects of smoking those plants and try to have a sensible calm conversation with him about it

If you ingest loads of nutmeg it gives you powerful hallucinations. It also makes you violently sick. Like you'd need like several whole things of it.
