All my historically fat friends have gone thin this year

1000 replies

donttellscotty · 30/12/2025 15:43

Okay maybe not ALL of them, but a few friends/acquaintances who have been very big for years and years, tried everything but could never shift the slightest bit of weight, have all had dramatic transformations and shed many stones over the past year. It’s just becoming expected now whenever I see another formerly large acquaintance or relative pop up on my feed with a super slim selfie.

I (rightly or wrongly) suspect it’s got to be WLIs or similar? Although all are adamant it’s a strict diet only. Just to add there is NOTHING wrong with jabs at all, and I’m aware it’s absolutely none of my business, and I sound mean but I wouldn’t actually discuss this in RL. It just got me thinking that being overweight might be obsolete in a few years?

Anyone else noticing this trend with people they know?

I’ll be losing the weight one way or the other. If I can’t lose it through diet and exercise then I’ll be consulting a doctor rather than using injections that I’ve seen adverse side effects from in multiple people.

The side effects if you get any, are ones the majority of women are well used to. The gippy belly caused by hormones before your period, feeling a bit sick or tired.
They are short lived and treatable. Obesity or even long term fat around the organs is so much worse.

Also Monjaro seems to help mental health overall. Maybe a symptom of a healthier gut.

Anything which reduces the devastation obesity wreaks upon the body should be applauded.

THIS

WLIs are miracles for those who have tried everything else

Totallyfedupnow · 30/12/2025 22:01

OP It really is none of your business - wind your neck in and focus on your own life/health/body.

Rituelec · 30/12/2025 22:04

Everyone thought the pill was amazing, till we learnt the side effects...

I am one of those people 🤣 lost 7 stone this year with Mounjaro. I get asked all the time if its the jabs and I always say no because, quite frankly, its not anyone elses business!

So why not say myob or tell the truth rather than lie?

Not rtft but what I've already read has riled me, why do people think that Mounjaro etc.dont require willpower? They absolutely do, I say this as someone who is still morbidly obese and has lost just over 5 stone in a year using MJ. I've also spent a fucking fortune lining SW and WW pockets since I was 16. 16! All the shitty recipes books, the "HiFi bars" yadda yadda..... mounjaro has proved the best vfm out of the lot because I simply dont think about food/syns/points etc. Doesnt mean it's easy, if i wanted to I could still sink a 2K cal meal of unhealthy shit 3 times a day, MJ has literally changed my world for the better and I know in myself how much willpower and work it's taken so fair play to anyone on their own journey. IMO it doesnt matter how you've done it well done all.

But you’ve said it yourself - it’s not that it doesn’t take effort to eat healthily and in a calorie deficit but the WLI makes doing so possible for you, or at least easier.

Those of us who either don’t qualify or can’t afford them have to put in the effort without the help of MJ. I know you’ve been there so surely you can say it’s now easier, after all, why would it not be? How I wish I had a food “off switch” to go with all my knowledge of food and ability to calorie track intuitively.

I do feel that @TipTopHat deserves praise for that. It is no mean feat to lose 7 stones. Congratulations are in order imo.

One of my friends has developed pancreatitis and another is having her gallbladder removed. Not exactly normal side effects that women are used to. On the milder side, I have a cousin who vomits and gets explosive diarrhoea if she eats anything slightly greasy or spicy.

What are the side effects? Doesn't anyone take it anymore? I never took it because I hate taking any kind of medication.

I think it can, in very rare cases, cause blood clots and increase stroke risk. Which is why they can be reluctant to prescribed to heavy smokers or the very overweight.

However, I still think the pill is inherently A Good Thing, given the relatively low risks, the care taken with prescribing and the revolutionary impact it had on women's lives.

20bloodypounds · 30/12/2025 21:55

I have learned how many calories I need to maintain my current weight (a lot less than when I started!). I have learned what a suitable portion size looks like for me. I have bought smaller plates to serve my food on. I buy much less in the shops. I have stopped having crisps, biscuits etc in the cupboard (except for dh's treat cupboard which I never open). I have a repertoire of healthy meals to cook for both simple and extravagent ocassions. I doubt I will ever eat pasta again. My sweet tooth has gone.

As others have said, WLIs suppressed my appetite enough that I could be consistant over 15 - 18 months so the habits are really strong. Ditto with exercise, I have a bunch of friends there now which helps me to go when my resolve is weak.

Most people go back down the doses as they are approaching maintenance (although some just stop) until they reach a lower dose where the balance of appetite suppression matches their maintenance needs. Some people go right down through all the doses then stop becoming more confident every step of the way. On the lower doses the appetite suppression is pretty low.

Personally I am now doing one month on and one month off (agreed with my prescriber). The month off so I can feel what my 'normal' appetite is and to find out whether the habits are sticking, and the option of a month on so I can have a little bit of 'help' if there are corrections to be made to my habits e.g. having a G&T every evening rather than rarely.

Just had a wishful thought …. I can do all the same things as you. Know the calorie and nutrients of all my food. Can plate my food intuitively. Know what will reduce evening snacking. But I don’t have the appetite suppressant of a WLI. So it’s a constant Herculean effort. Maybe when I reach non fat status (if ever) i could be prescribed a reward of NHS preventative maintenance wee dose, just to keep me on the straight and narrow. Oh my god you can tell how envious of all of you who have the money to pay for it!

BECAUSE ITS NOT ANYONE ELSES’ BUSINESS!!!

Lotsnlotsoflove · 30/12/2025 22:14

Yes. I have a lot of cousins (sisters) who historically were fat and they are all really slim now. I’m sure they are on weight loss jabs but not my business I guess. I have put on a lot of weight having historically been ‘the slim one’ so it’s kind of weird for tables to have turned like this!

Notashamed13 · 30/12/2025 22:14

I also just want to add that if you don't have a genuine problem with food (for whatever reason - I know mine was the forbidden fruit technique when growing up), then you will never understand the issues people like myself and thousands of others are having to experience daily to feel that spending (let's face it) a small fortune each month on WLI is worth it.

Obesity also is a risk factor for gallbladder problems in itself. Once you qualify for WLIs there's really no path open to you that doesn't pose any potential gallbladder issues.

ZenLikeAlways · 30/12/2025 22:16

cavalier · 30/12/2025 21:45

They have side affects … my friend has had tummy issues but won’t come off them as she feels better than she has in 10 years .. and it will help the NHS as obesity is the cause of many a health issue as we know

Paracetamol has side effects. Read the label.

I do actually acknowledge friends or family who have some kind of achievement worth celebrating. I’m not a self involved arsehole like someone else here apparently…

People are saying that no one gives a shit how you lose the weight, then why are they lying when asked if they used WLIs?
Why not just tell the truth if they don’t care. Or if it’s ’no one’s business’ then say that! Don’t lie about it because anyone doing that clearly believes it’s more admirable not to use them.

They’re also saying it doesn’t deserve any more recognition to lose weight without them as WLIs still require willpower etc. If people are using injections because they couldn’t lose the weight on their own, then why are they so dismissive of people who have worked hard and managed to lose it on their own? That’s what’s jealousy.

I8toys · 30/12/2025 16:02

Oh yes. I didn't say a word. I just hope she's happier and hasn't developed an eating disorder. Do people just keep losing even when tiny - when is enough enough - is there evidence that it can cause body dysmorphia?

oh give over with the faux concern will you.

I totally understand if. but no matter what, I can’t afford it. I am prioritising eating good protein and food and if I spent that on WLI instead I would be eating cheap rubbish.

Because it takes longer to digest food. I no longer have to think about how "naughty" I'm being for having a bit of fucking mayo on my salad.... my body now physically tells me "you are full, stop". I dont EVER have cravings for sweet shit anymore, I couldn't even tell you when I last had chocolate or sweets etc.
