All my historically fat friends have gone thin this year

1000 replies

donttellscotty · 30/12/2025 15:43

Okay maybe not ALL of them, but a few friends/acquaintances who have been very big for years and years, tried everything but could never shift the slightest bit of weight, have all had dramatic transformations and shed many stones over the past year. It’s just becoming expected now whenever I see another formerly large acquaintance or relative pop up on my feed with a super slim selfie.

I (rightly or wrongly) suspect it’s got to be WLIs or similar? Although all are adamant it’s a strict diet only. Just to add there is NOTHING wrong with jabs at all, and I’m aware it’s absolutely none of my business, and I sound mean but I wouldn’t actually discuss this in RL. It just got me thinking that being overweight might be obsolete in a few years?

Anyone else noticing this trend with people they know?

You mentioned the school gates. What would people be doing standing "gossiping" at the school gates unless they are parents?

Parents are both male and female.

Please don't get mad at this question as I genuinely am interested. Are you saying that you gained a few pounds over Christmas? Does that mean that you came off the WLI and your appetite came back?

I gained weight over Xmas and I'm on a high dose 😂

WLIs just make it easier for me to say no to the high fat food. I still WANT them and I still have to make a conscious choice, sometimes against a fairly strong temptation, not to have them.

Like most people, over Xmas, I decided to loosen the reins a bit. The difference is that, being on MJ, I didn't binge and have found returning to my normal routine very simple.

GalaxyJam · 30/12/2025 21:18

I’m not on WLI and I’ve gained a couple of lbs over Christmas. Fairly normal isn’t it?

Yes, but there are different implications for people on WLI who my question is aimed at. I just wonder what would motivate someone to come off the medication for seasonal use. If your appetite is under control by the drugs, where does the urge to overeat come from?

I'll be decomposing, so if anything weight loss will probably accelerate.

God, I miss the laugh reaction.

I said they don’t teach good habits.

because you’re not losing weight through diet and exercise.

Do you not realise that not everyone loses their appetite on WLI?? That people are different? I’ve been on WLI for just over six months. I’ve lost nearly 4 stones and have a couple more to go. It’s been bloody hard. I have a huge appetite still. I do not get full. I can eat and eat. I am having to use a heck of willpower and make good diet and exercise choices. To the extent that I’m going to give up on the WLI when I run out of the pens I stocked up on when the price rose because there doesn’t seem much point in spending the £££ for me. I’m doing exactly what I did last time I lost a few stones. Cutting out refined sugar and processed foods. The reason I thought I’d try WLI this time was because I’d had a lot of tough stuff go on in my life and I wanted a crutch. I was also facing a huge amount of weight to shift and I thought it would help having a kick start. It may have helped at the start, but I think it’s mostly down to me. Especially lately. Now I’m going to treat myself to some personal training sessions and start C25K.

And thankfully I haven’t any loose skin yet, so I won’t be revolting any stuck up gym users! Nor do I have hair loss, a saggy face (dreamed up by the media and swallowed up by the gullible) or any side effects!

I have told a few people, but mostly I tell people that I’m cutting out sugar and processed foods- which is true. And nobody has noticed because I can eat normal amounts of food. I was hypnotised to stop smoking decades ago. I don’t think I told many people that either. Lots of comments on here underline exactly why many people keep it secret! The judgemental are around in their masses!

I often wonder what a body that has very quickly lost about 10 stone would look like naked though. I've seen a few at the gym who have lost a lot of weight(by any means) and the sagging skin is so disgusting that I think I'd rather stay fat. Your arms, inner thighs, tummy, neck and face. Everywhere shows clear signs of dramatic weight loss. I guess if you didn't care about that aspect of things then at least you're healthier. It just would feel depressing to lose the weight and still hate what you see in the mirror.

I’ve lost over 7st and have a saggy stomach. Largely because I’ve carried 4 big babies, apart from being overweight. I can confidently say I’m happy with my naked body. It’s not fantastic but I’m 44 - what percentage of the population is ever truly happy with what they see in the mirror?

sunshinestar1986 · 30/12/2025 21:23

I wish had the guts to try the jabs but one negative story and no thanks lol

I'll just try low carb again 🤣

SwirlyShirly · 30/12/2025 21:23

I’m one of them but I had an op 3 years ago in Feb and I’ve lost 14stone 2 Ibs 🥳 I’m so happy going in to 2026 without a New Year’s resolution to lose weight (for the first time in living memory!!)

Ah. Got it. I think. Thank you.

Just for info: I decided not to loosen the reins over Christmas and just ate as I always do. I feel like I'm in the weight loss flow and I didn't want to break that in case I couldn't get back on the wagon after Christmas. Many would have a huge problem with me doing that. You can't win when it comes to weight loss.

Sorry, dont think i made it fully clear. I didn't stop injecting for Christmas but still made thd decision, consciously, to enjoy more foods which objectively I know to be sub-optimal for health.

The drug controls the insatiable need for food. It doesn't control being hungry or fancying a little bit of something nice. Not for me anyway. Just gives me breathing space to make the best choices for me.

Having loose skin is disgusting in your opinion. I don’t value your opinion.

I've reported for persistently using the same description. Had enough!

I haven’t noticed this in my circle. The only people I know who are on the jabs were slim anyway and are now super slim and ripped. And I don’t think being overweight will become obsolete. There’s still a relatively small number of people who can maintain the cost of jabs. It’s a significant outgoing.

It’s huge, but there’s at least 4 colleagues who are on it. Two look emaciated, 2 look great. One says she’ll take looking good and wearing fab clothes while she can afford to maintain it. I had a bypass 2.5 years ago and the weightloss was quick, 70kg, over 11st gone very quickly.

I lost 9st years ago through blood, sweat and tears, 50 lengths of the pool, riding 3 horses a day, crazy racquet sports, all in the same day and an extreme diet, but then I had a mobility limiting accident, piled it all back on, so the op seemed sensible. I would probably have gone for wli had they been as prevalent 3 years ago. Fair play to anyone doing it, I say. Better than being physically limited and in a wheelchair or diabetic and experiencing issues.

robinsinthesnow · 30/12/2025 15:49

The other thing is there really isn’t anything wrong with wanting a bit of privacy.

I was quite open when I decided to order Mounjaro. I just saw it as being equivalent to being a smoker who used nicotine patches (I don’t smoke by the way!) But I really wish I hadn’t - from the school mum who introduces me as ‘this is X; she’s lost five stone doing Mounjaro’ to the colleague who has asked me six times if I’m eating Christmas dinner before the break, to MIL who keeps asking ‘what the plan is’ - I don’t actually care if people know but it’s starting to feel like my defining quality and it’s really fucking tedious!

I can imagine how you must feel. Well done on the weight loss

ByPoisedRaven · 30/12/2025 21:28

I gained a bit of weight after some health issues and decided it was time to lose it recently. I lost one and a half stone in three months. I did do it the old fashioned way. Only two people have commented and both have asked me if I did it the old fashioned way. It now seems to be the default assumption that if you lose significant weight, you must be on the injections.

CremeCarmel · 30/12/2025 21:29

Parents are both male and female.

Come on, we all know that when we use the words "gossiping" at the school gates what demographic is conventionally being described. And yes, it is misogynistic, although I'm not sure that it was actually meant that way in the post. We've all fired off posts very quickly and then have to suck it up when they don't land as we intended.

InfoSecInTheCity · 30/12/2025 20:56

Explain how it doesn’t help you create good habits.

Ive been on MJ for 15 months. During that time ive tracked every bit of food and drink I’ve put in my mouth, I’ve stuck to a calorie deficit reducing my allowance based on my current weight using a TDEE calculator. I eat 500 below my TDEE to lose, and stick to my TDEE to maintain, so currently I eat around 1400 calories a day, low carb, high protein, high fibre, moderate fat. I started going to the gym or swimming pool 3 times a week and I also do exercises at home and walk more.

What would I have been doing differently without the Mounjaro, other than feeling starving hungry, being miserable and giving up and binging regularly that would have led to better habits than the ones I’ve developed now?

This is why I am so jealous!!! I freely admit and own that. Oh my god if I could just lose the food noise I would be ecstatic.

I have done similar to you but the effort and yes feeling hungry has accompanied me all the way. I don’t see it as cheating on WLI, but it is undeniably much easier with its appetite suppressing effects. Otherwise why bother. I can’t afford it and don’t qualify for it on the NHS so I’ve either got to work my arse and mind constantly to keep to my good habits, eat as best possible to reduce evening hunger, or put the weight back on. My choice. But I absolutely don’t have the choice of buying a WLI.

And for those who talk of the reduced food bill covering much of the Mounjaro bill, that is only true if your previous life consisted of lots of takeaways etc. I spend far more on my good protein and whole foods diet which presumably I would also eat on WLI.

I suppose my very slow weight loss - 25 kg so far - has not created any saggy skin, or maybe that’s a positive side of being money poor!

School gates have Mums and Dads there ,not just Mums !

Please don't get mad at this question as I genuinely am interested. Are you saying that you gained a few pounds over Christmas? Does that mean that you came off the WLI and your appetite came back?

No I gained a couple of pounds because i was eating things I don't usually have - more sugar, more alcohol, the occasional croissant. I'm on a very low dose so not much suppression and I can overeat if I choose to.

But I'm choosing not to, and will eat in a calorie deficit until those couple of pounds are going. Isn't that what 'normal' slim people ? Overindulge a little, then cut back again.

Applesonthelawn · 30/12/2025 21:33

The average person is getting thinner, it's a good thing, jabs or not.
But you are not wrong that some people who take them will lie rather than admit to taking them. My BIL has lost 12 stone and we are not allowed to let on we know he's taking them. Ridiculous, but at least he's lost the weight.

CremeCarmel · 30/12/2025 21:33

Shizzlestix · 30/12/2025 21:25

Is age a factor here? I don't want to be ageist but a young person who loses weight is obviously going to look very different when thin to an older person who might actually look older with weight loss because fat irons out the wrinkles.

But now I come to think of it weight loss is so individual. Some older people I know who have lost weight the old fashioned way look fantastic. They exercised a lot which makes a huge difference, I think.

Applesonthelawn · 30/12/2025 21:34

Of course people who are on the jabs also have to work to retrain their habits, but it's undoubtedly the case that the jabs help you do that. Otherwise they would not be popular and successful.
