All my historically fat friends have gone thin this year

1000 replies

donttellscotty · 30/12/2025 15:43

Okay maybe not ALL of them, but a few friends/acquaintances who have been very big for years and years, tried everything but could never shift the slightest bit of weight, have all had dramatic transformations and shed many stones over the past year. It’s just becoming expected now whenever I see another formerly large acquaintance or relative pop up on my feed with a super slim selfie.

I (rightly or wrongly) suspect it’s got to be WLIs or similar? Although all are adamant it’s a strict diet only. Just to add there is NOTHING wrong with jabs at all, and I’m aware it’s absolutely none of my business, and I sound mean but I wouldn’t actually discuss this in RL. It just got me thinking that being overweight might be obsolete in a few years?

Anyone else noticing this trend with people they know?

Perhaps you could have a sandwich board made to wear when you’re out?

No, because my weight loss is really a private matter. I don't want to be asked if I am on weight loss drugs and then people assuming I'm lying. That would mess with my head.

When I have lost weight without medication in the past I have hated the focus that people place on my body. It's as though they become obsessed. And I know that there must be such a contrast between my fat and slim body, but I don't enjoy that kind of attention. It's nice to lose weight but you just want to be left alone.

DontFallInTheHaHa · 30/12/2025 21:00

I said they don’t teach good habits.

because you’re not losing weight through diet and exercise.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 30/12/2025 21:01

I have three very big friends currently on WLI. They are all looking fab and are very open about it.

I lost a lot of weight through diet and lifestyle choices a few years ago. I don't feel morally superior to those who are using WLI but I'm grateful I didn't have the expense and the side effects my friends are having.

Diamondsbutnoknickers · 30/12/2025 21:02

I've lost a lot of weight. It's purely through diet.
I suspect people think it's the jabs but it is literally just willpower to stop eating crap.

It’s nasty to notice people losing huge amounts of weight?

ozempic jaw is a thing.

but nice misogynistic assumption there

Why is it a misogynistic comment? Dads also pick up from school,or so I thought! Are you a Mum or Dad ? How did you know how much the TAs have lost?Do they have scales outside the school?

Because the poster assumed I am a gossiping mum. because that’s all women do, gossip in the playground

Wtf this is an awful way to view the world. Someone who has lost a lot of weight when they were obese is much healthier. Why are u body shaming them now? I worry how unforgiving you are to yourself if you see things this way.

I realise my audience here and that's probably my main mistake. The venom I've received simply for one comment that having a lot of loose skin all over the body is disgustingband needs to at least be considered as a 'con'. Hopefully for most it will be outweighed by the many pros though but please stop this nonsense that I'm somehow evil for pointing out the obvious. It's only a physical observation and nothing whatsoever to do with the person. I'd obviously never say this in real life! I've seen all sorts of horrible stuff on Mumsnet over the years and thought that this was just life but it seems like the honesty about weight just seems like a step too far or a no go area to most on here.
Best thing to do is just pretend that you lose the weight and underneath the clothes you just go back to looking 25. No need to be realistic in Mumsnet land.

You literally loose weight through diet with jabs. Exercise never leads to notable weight loss.

Having loose skin is disgusting in your opinion. I don’t value your opinion.

But why do you feel the need to lie if you aren’t doing anything wrong?!

I want to lose 10 kg next year. I lost it three years ago with diet and exercise. Unfortunately the last year has been quite stressful and I gained some of it back. I hope to again lose it in the new year. I will not be using WLI as my current BMI is 25.5 so definitely not in the weight range for WLI. I remember a lot of folk asking me for tips when I lost weight last time and I was happy to share. I would not lie about the reasons for my success or failure especially to my family and friends.

I have always found it embarrassing to talk about how I lost weight. And I haven't used weight loss jabs. I'm not sure why this is. I think it might be because for me to lose weight I can't eat the way that most people do and I don't want people to know that because in my experience when they find out they accuse you of having an eating disorder or something - to lose weight I find I can't eat sweets at all and for some reason many people think that eating sweets is a sign that you are a fun person. It isn't. So, I don't like talking about it in case people think I'm obsessive.

SilenceInside · 30/12/2025 21:09

@DontFallInTheHaHa I’ve been in a calorie deficit for 18 months. And exercising. How am I losing the weight if not through diet and exercise? WLI don’t melt the fat off for you regardless. They enable you to be in a calorie deficit and stick with it consistently long term.

20bloodypounds · 30/12/2025 21:09

DontFallInTheHaHa · 30/12/2025 20:38

Question for weight loss jabs users - when you lose the weight will you take traditional steps to not put it back on? Because it doesn’t teach good eating and exercise habits.

Yes. Right from the start I commited to change for ever. I knew what I should eat for a healthy diet, but being on MJ made it easier for me to make those choices. Firstly I wasn't so tempted by sugary treats, crisps and alcohol. Secondly my appetite was smaller so to be healthy and to up my exercise I had to pack as much good nutrition into every bite I was eating. I helps that I like planning and cooking.

I was also fortunate to have the support of a fantastic group of people who started this journey at the same time as me. They are funny and feisty and between us we've lost a hell of a lot of weight. 15 months in and many people are at or approaching their goal weight, so the talk is on maintenance. We encourage each other to eat well and share tips, recipe and information about helpful products (the supermarket ranges that are not UPF).

There are also other similar threads full of inspiration and ideas of what to eat in a day. There are discussions on how to get sufficient protein and fibre, and eat a wide range of vegetables (without resorting to protein shakes). It's all quite uplifting to see the stories of people who have stopped taking WLI and who have maintained their weight for many, many months, as well as those who are cutting down on the dose successfully [assuming that everything you read on mumsnet is true!]

I've also being doing weights at the gym, walking much more, swimming, and have started pilates - all so much easier at a lighter weight.

Finally, for some people being obese for a lot of their life time would have scewed their metabolism leading to insulin resistance, high cholesterol, high blood pressure etc. Maintaining at a healthy weight has restored how their metabolism should work, reversing diabetes, regulating other hormones and allowing them to manage their feelings of hunger and satiety.

I am now on the lowest dose and intend to stop completely when I am confident that i have learned and ingrained the good habits and lessons, and that I can manage to lose (for example) a couple of post Christmas pounds without resorting to WLIs or diet shakes.

I said they don’t teach good habits.

because you’re not losing weight through diet and exercise.

How, with the amount of information available now about WLI's, do people still believe this medication can prompt the biological impossibility of weight loss without a calorie deficit?

Yes. You still need to reduce your calories and exercise whilst on the jabs. No, some don't. And that small minority will either become very sick or lose no weight whatsoever. Some will lose weight because they stop eating altogether, which is very dangerous and advised against.

The vast majority will adjust their lifestyles according to the information about healthy living that they have always known. The medication means they will be able to consistently keep it up for long enough to see results.

Regaining weight is inevitable in almost all cases of weight loss, no matter the method. Which is why I, and many others, have no plans to cease the medication at all.

DontFallInTheHaHa · 30/12/2025 21:13

Those responding to my question about what they’ll do when they come off the jabs - do you think that weight loss will be as easy to achieve/sustain off the jabs as they are on the jabs?

qwertyasdfgzxcv · 30/12/2025 21:13

How does it work? Once you’ve lost the weight do you need to keep taking it? Or can you stop paying for it and just maintain the new weight?

I stopped my jabs in September and have maintained my healthy eating. It was the reset I needed to get me going.

Please don't get mad at this question as I genuinely am interested. Are you saying that you gained a few pounds over Christmas? Does that mean that you came off the WLI and your appetite came back?

SilenceInside · 30/12/2025 21:17

@DontFallInTheHaHa I’m honestly trying to be charitable but these questions do seem like you think that all obese people are just a bit dim….

if I stop taking a medication that is effective at helping me lose weight, then it will stop having any effect on me. So no reduction in appetite, no feeling fuller for longer…. So of course it will be harder! I will need to solely rely on the long term habits I’ve worked on, and sticking to those changes even when feeling more urge to ignore them. That will be a challenge. I am aware of that, and have thought of little else over the period that I have been losing weight.

I’m not on WLI and I’ve gained a couple of lbs over Christmas. Fairly normal isn’t it?
