All my historically fat friends have gone thin this year

1000 replies

donttellscotty · 30/12/2025 15:43

Okay maybe not ALL of them, but a few friends/acquaintances who have been very big for years and years, tried everything but could never shift the slightest bit of weight, have all had dramatic transformations and shed many stones over the past year. It’s just becoming expected now whenever I see another formerly large acquaintance or relative pop up on my feed with a super slim selfie.

I (rightly or wrongly) suspect it’s got to be WLIs or similar? Although all are adamant it’s a strict diet only. Just to add there is NOTHING wrong with jabs at all, and I’m aware it’s absolutely none of my business, and I sound mean but I wouldn’t actually discuss this in RL. It just got me thinking that being overweight might be obsolete in a few years?

Anyone else noticing this trend with people they know?

Its not really any of your business OP. Just be happy for them they have improved their health.

Tink3rbell30 · 30/12/2025 18:21

Yes it's so obvious it's mainly MJ.

Flowers999 · 30/12/2025 15:48

I am one of those people 🤣 lost 7 stone this year with Mounjaro. I get asked all the time if its the jabs and I always say no because, quite frankly, its not anyone elses business!

Edited

So you're happy for people to know you're a liar? You're right, it's no ones business but using WLIs is nothing to be ashamed of. Genuinely well done on losing 7 stone though.

Anything which reduces the devastation obesity wreaks upon the body should be applauded.

Not really. The WLI’s can be dangerous for some people (like me - they would kill me). Being obese is far healthier in my view than being dead.

Why are they dangerous? Considering starting and need to consider all angles

SilenceInside · 30/12/2025 18:27

@Needtogetthetreedownnow rather than ask on this thread, I’d suggest looking on one of the online pharmacies for information about side effects. Asda Online Doctor have a lot of useful and referenced information. Eg https://onlinedoctor.asda.com/uk/is-the-weight-loss-injection-mounjaro-safe.html for Mounjaro, and they will have similar for Wegovy.

Oh @Yuja you must be mightily pissed off that now we can be thin without all the Ed behaviour, just eating healthier and no food noise, it's brilliant you should try it, been on it a while 5 stone down, and there's some very upset people. You should try it, no more just having a black coffee denial you just won't think about food it's brill! It seriously gets on people's wick though that you won't talk about it, I don't because a, it's boring, and b, it's none of your fucking business.
In the same way that if they asked me how I paid for my new car, or my sex life, I'd tell them to keep their beak out, rude bastards.

You’re right it is a spectacularly dull conversation in real life, when people embark on it with me I think they believe I’m going to tell them I eat what I like and the weight magically disappears. The actual truth is I calorie and macro count, eat low carb and stick to around 1200-1400 calories a day of high protein, high fibre, moderate fat, low carb foods. I was on 1600-1800 calories when I started but recalculated TDEE regularly and adjusted down as I got smaller. The difference MJ makes is I no longer crave sweets and am desperately hungry all the time so I can stick to this kind of diet indefinitely and not feel miserable.

DontGoJasonWaterfalls · 30/12/2025 18:31

Most of my friends are on WLIs. It is hard going from fitting in to being the only fat friend 😂 but I can't afford the jabs, and can barely control my epilepsy with medication as it is, never mind throwing a new medication into the mix.

I think in a way that's helpful though, things will shift so that when people see a fat person they won't immediately think "lazy" or "no self control", they'll think "poor" - which isn't great but it is preferable. I do think it will, in a roundabout way, start to break down the stigma and attitudes because being fat is no longer seen as just "thin people have self control, fat people don't" - it'll be more nuanced. Maybe that's just me hoping something good comes of it 😂

I'm happy for my friends, they've made incredible progress, and hopeful for my own slower progress with a fresh start in the new year.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 30/12/2025 17:59

YES! It's so funny...

ME: "oh hey Anne, you're looking great!"
(Anne just dropped 3 stone and now has no butt)
Anne: "yeah, just not eating bread"
ME: "sure"

Well you walked into that by commenting on "Anne"'s appearance, didn't you?

If you'd said "Hey anne how are things?" she could have told you about her plans to retrain as an accountant or her recent trip to Worcester instead. Or you could have just asked her where she got her coat.

Exactly this. You’d have thought by now that people would have realised that there are far more interesting things to talk to people about than their weight/appearance.

5128gap · 30/12/2025 18:37

Perhaps it's my age, but all my friends have spent the year half heartedly cutting back on food, upping excercise for a time, and losing and regaining the same stone or so.
Just as we do every year.
We vow to variously stop drinking, lift weights and do couch to 5k, then dont, and blame the menopause.
So I don't know a single person I'd 'suspect' of being on WLI. If I cared.

Arraminta · 30/12/2025 18:38

I lost 3 stones on WLI and look and feel so much better and healthier. I have maintained my new weight of 9st 8lbs since the Spring on a 5mg of Mounjaro maintenance dose. I have no intention of stopping.

I have been very open about using WLI. Just about everyone has been really positive and encouraging. The few who felt the need to be disparaging and criticise me 'for cheating'.......regretted it.

Certain heart conditions can be made worse and any one with a dodgy pancreas (me) wouldn’t be able to process and it would eventually kill me. I had gallstones previously and they caused pancreatitis.

Binus · 30/12/2025 18:39

Pickledpoppetpickle · 30/12/2025 18:20

Most overweight people do not have a spare £125-£250pm (depending on dose) and if they did, wouldn't spend it on WLIs because they would place a higher priority on a family lifestyle that includes eg fully functional household appliances & every day technology, an annual holiday, or a sufficiently comfortable and spacious home to live in

Weird point of view. I afford mounjaro because I no longer purchase take aways, alcohol and don't eat out as much. My weekly shop has also reduced by about 15%. It covers the cost. My priority is trying not to die. My adult children want me around.

It is rather odd. Reads like that poster believe sthey have access to some secret data about obese people's holiday habits and broken washing machines.

ThisHazelPombear · 30/12/2025 18:39

Yeah it’s the injections, two in-laws are on them but openly 🤷🏻‍♀️

A distant acquaintance had a gastric band but told everyone she just gave up chips. Not enough of them though if the last photo is anything to go by.

Pedallleur · 30/12/2025 18:39

Shmoigel · 30/12/2025 18:03

My mum told me the other day that they give you a baggy vagina! That seems to be the new scare tactic! Can’t say I have noticed that side effect

This will be the new thing for men to say. Along with too much sex gives women a thigh gap, so wli will mean that vaginas are no longer 'tight'. No wonder people choose not to discuss their weight loss

well aren’t you pleasant.

Lemondrizzle4A · 30/12/2025 18:44

I have lost over 5 stone on mounjaro and to begin with didn’t tell anyone. Now I don’t care. I still have to watch what I eat and rarely do carbs. It has transformed my life from someone reluctant to participate in family gatherings to now embracing them. Yes it suppresses appetite but it doesn’t control what you eat so if you consume all things full of fat and sugar it might not work so well.

Tell me you’re not jealous without telling me you’re not jealous.

I think it's ok to be jealous - I have always worked bloody hard to be slim and healthy and I am 100% jealous of people who have a quick fix.
Like having worked my ass off and someone wins the lottery... hell yeah I'm well jel.

I mean, it's not 'quick'. It's definitely fixed me though, so there's that.

I have a feeling that this poster's NHS trust may be trying to cover up some medical incompetence and poor provision by blaming fat people. I mean, it's not unheard of.

But it’s also provable fact that Mounjaro was not developed for weight loss. Its primary development was for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, as was Ozempic. The side effect of weight loss has been a goldmine for the pharmaceutical industry.

PrincessofWells · 30/12/2025 18:49

20bloodypounds · 30/12/2025 18:10

Well you had a very fortunate start in life. Genuine comment. However, not every parent has the interest, the skill, the time or the money to eat like that (do you know how much cheaper a diet high in UPFs is than one based on organic veg, grass fed beef and responsibly sourced fish?). So there are succesive generations growing up also without the skills or knowledge about nutrition. Look at the obesity rates in children, it's not their fault that they are eating UPFs.

By the time people have been obese for years, many of them will have a metabolism that is no longer functioning as it should - insulin resitance and other hormonal imbalances. For them it is not enough stop eating sugar and UPFs, it is so much more complicated than that. If you or those close to you have never had to face and understand the desparation of metabolic disorders, you again are fortunate.

For some I know on WLIs, getting to and maintaining a healthy weight, along with being able to make better food choices, has gone a long way to reversing some of their health issues. But most of them would never and made that progress without Mounjaro.

My quote really was pointing out that we didn't have upfs in the 60s or up to mid 70s. They really only became huge in the 80s and that yes, weight issues are directly and indirectly caused by upfs. I really can't understand why steps are not taken to ban them. I was in the US and complained to the restaurant that the mayo was sweet. Yes ma'am mayo is sweet. I had to explain, but I don't think she believed me. That's why there is an epidemic over there and now it's over here.

Rewis · 30/12/2025 18:51

Or maybe these overweight people instead of putting £2000 pounds to stocks and bonds every month they only put £1750. A lot of people have money to spare even after buying a new washing machine annually.

That being said, unfortunately where i live it is a lot more expensive than that and I unfortunately can't justify the price. But weird assumption that overweight people don't have money to spare and fully ficntional household.

EdgeOfThirtySeven · 30/12/2025 18:51

I feel a bit sorry for a friend of mine. She has lost four stone through diet and exercise (I know this to be true). And everyone just assumes she used the jabs.
