to throw them away and start again …

I have an Airbnb in the French Alps and while I was over in the UK for Christmas I bought 3 white duvet sets from Dunelm in the sale.
Paid to upgrade my hand baggage (£35) and TBF I had new towels, cushion covers, large Christmas Pudding in there too. Dragged my very, very, very heavy bag all around Gatwick & Geneva airports via Uber/Train/Plane/Bus/Walk.
Opened it up when I got back and looked properly I’d gone and bought 100% bloody polyester!!! Fogarty, but polyester nonetheless.
AIBU to throw them away? I could try and sell them at a huge loss (bearing in mind they are UK King Size not French King Size so very limited market).
I can’t remember the last time I knowingly slept on non-cotton bedding. Do you think they are useable? Does anyone use polyester? Or shall I leave them by the mollocs for an unsuspecting person to take?

Of course they’re usable! Why on earth would you consider throwing them away?

if your Airbnb is too upmarket for polyester, why not put them in a cupboard for ‘spares’ or give them to a charity shop.

it’s a shame you wasted the £35, but honestly, I think you’re sounding a bit precious.

Gingercar · 30/12/2025 10:50

I get what you mean. I find polyester bedding overheats me and I don’t sleep well in it. I’m also thinking of having a B&B and would avoid polyester bedding for guests.
Could you sell it? (Sorry just read about sizes, so perhaps not)

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/12/2025 10:52

Must say I wouldn’t never want polyester sheets, but I dare say your local charity shop will find a home for them.

Of course, real linen sheets are the crème de la crème, such as a BiL has in his vast place in France. An absolute bugger to iron, though, but he did buy the local woman who does it, an ironing machine.

ladyofshertonabbas · 30/12/2025 10:52

What did you intend to purchase?! (Edit; cotton, you said, I didn't read,)

popupandsayhi · 30/12/2025 10:53

Quite possibly the poshest AIBU of the year. Love it.

averychoc · 30/12/2025 10:54

YABU to think selling or throwing away are the only options. Donate them. Given them to someone you know who might make use of them.

HoppityBun · 30/12/2025 10:55

Donate them

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 30/12/2025 10:55

Put them in pure linen covers. Nobody will notice. I can't remember the last time I read the label on a duvet.

cooldarkroom · 30/12/2025 10:56

They are find for rentals. Will dry quicker & dont need ironing.
Just get cotton for yourself

BeepBoopBop · 30/12/2025 10:56

Of course my Airbnb is upmarket! Competition is fierce out here and good bedding is essential - I don’t want to lose my 5.0 rating for guests having a poor nights sleep - I genuinely have not slept with polyester bedding, but I assume it’s not breathable.
Charity shops are very thin on the ground - shop rents are huge so there are none for about 30kms. I’ll see if an online charity can use them but they are too short for French duvets.

Personally, I wouldn't use them. I hate polyester and would hate to sleep in it. Are they unused and back in the packaging? Perhaps you can post them to the uk to return them.

That’s the point - they are the covers!

Sorry! Me reading too fast as usual!

HappyFace2025 · 30/12/2025 11:01

If they are just the covers (I also misread and thought it was the actual duvet, which it wouldn't have been for that price!) mail them back to the UK for a refund 🤔

LardoBurrows · 30/12/2025 11:04

Could you use them as duvet protectors underneath cotton duvet covers? They would be an extra layer of protection for your duvets. If you don't think this is a good idea, can you take them with you on your next trip to the U.K. and donate to one of the many charity shops?

Bigearringsbigsmile · 30/12/2025 11:06

Are they actually poly cotton?
I'd keep them for emergency spares.

Needspaceforlego · 30/12/2025 11:09

Put them in a cupboard as spares and read the label next time.

shhblackbag · 30/12/2025 11:10

Try to return them. Otherwise donate. But I hear you, I would hate arriving somewhere and having to sleep in polyester bedding. Especially if I paid a lot for the accommodation. It doesn't match.

Assuming you got them from a shop and not online, you can’t mail them back to the shop for a refund. The postage wouldn’t be worth the cost even if you could! Do they have a facebook group of the local community so you could donate to someone in need?

What are mollocs?

Even Google isn't helping with it?

Why don’t you just gift or resell them?

To be fair once you move on to cotton you’ll never be able to go polyester again, it becomes so noticeable.

TrustedTheWrongFart · 30/12/2025 11:22

Why have you gone for UK duvets instead of the French sized equivalents? Surely that’s just more admin and bother?

ZsaZsaSzuSzu · 30/12/2025 11:27

Give them to a church/ le Secours Catholique/ Homeless charity, I' m sure their "customers" won't mind sleeping in polyester.....

Big outside bins, partially buried in the ground.

Beekman · 30/12/2025 11:29

It’s only £35 which in the posh AirB&B world of the South of France is probably sod all. Throw them away if they’re causing you that amount of distress.
