to throw them away and start again …

I have an Airbnb in the French Alps and while I was over in the UK for Christmas I bought 3 white duvet sets from Dunelm in the sale.
Paid to upgrade my hand baggage (£35) and TBF I had new towels, cushion covers, large Christmas Pudding in there too. Dragged my very, very, very heavy bag all around Gatwick & Geneva airports via Uber/Train/Plane/Bus/Walk.
Opened it up when I got back and looked properly I’d gone and bought 100% bloody polyester!!! Fogarty, but polyester nonetheless.
AIBU to throw them away? I could try and sell them at a huge loss (bearing in mind they are UK King Size not French King Size so very limited market).
I can’t remember the last time I knowingly slept on non-cotton bedding. Do you think they are useable? Does anyone use polyester? Or shall I leave them by the mollocs for an unsuspecting person to take?

It’s only £35 which in the posh AirB&B world of the South of France is probably sod all. Throw them away if they’re causing you that amount of distress.

They weren’t £35

Big outside bins, partially buried in the ground.

Ahh thanks!

See I guessed it'd be something to do with bins from the context but still Google was an unhelpful bastard 😁

The nearest it gave me was shellfish 😳

MolkosTeenageAngst · 30/12/2025 11:33

Binning them seems a waste. Can you not stick them in a cupboard and then bring them back to the UK with you next time you go to donate to a charity shop? You could probably even donate them to a food bank or women’s refuge or hostel etc. Seems a waste to just bin them if brand new. Alternatively if bringing them back to the UK is too much of a faff keep them for spares, I think someone is unlikely to mark you down from 5 stars if they spill a drink on the bed or have an accident etc and the spare bedding isn’t 100% cotton.

CarnationAndPoppy · 30/12/2025 11:33

If you’re going to put them in the mollocs, consider keeping them for dust sheets to protect floors when the property is being decorated. This is what we do with no longer used bedding.

pinkspeakers · 30/12/2025 11:35

That's annoying. But I agree that if you are renting out an upmarket Airbnb then you can't have polyester sheets. Dont through them away though, I'm sure someone can make use of them.

Coulddowithanap · 30/12/2025 11:37

Why don't you try them out and see if you can't sleep?

ToKittyornottoKitty · 30/12/2025 11:38

Out of interest OP, why do you use UK duvets if they are smaller than French ones?

Love this 😁 Where I am, they replaced the plastic containers we used to have as communal outside bins. I live in a flat. We have ones for different recycling, etc.

It was £35 on top for my baggage upgrade to bring them back. The duvet sets were £25 each. I bought three.

give them to the charity shop

don't keep them in your Airbnb, 'the sheets created sparks etc'

can you not get these things delivered?!

BeepBoopBop · 30/12/2025 11:43

Also I’m not in the South of France, the French Alps is nowhere near.

They are find for rentals. Will dry quicker & dont need ironing.
Just get cotton for yourself

Not in the French Alps they aren't

Or in any decent BnB if you went good reviews

This. I really would hate it.

TiredofLDN · 30/12/2025 11:48

Just put them away for an emergency OP. You’ve spent what, £100 on them? Not worth risking your Airbnb rating. I’m far from posh but I won’t sleep on anything other than 100% cotton or linen bedding. I get too hot and I like bedtime as an opportunity to reduce exposure to microplastics (also trying to shift to all natural clothing fibres too…. That’s another story!)

Actually I lie- DS has one (spooky themed) polyester duvet cover, which I hate (and ofc is his favourite!) It feels awful to me, but he loves it!

InterestedDad37 · 30/12/2025 11:48

Shove it in the roofspace as insulation 😀

JWD · 30/12/2025 11:55

charity shop

ETA you might have to overpay luggage and shlep them back to the UK to get them to a charity shop!

Jamesblonde2 · 30/12/2025 11:58

Sell or charity shop. I definitely wouldn’t want to sleep in polyester if I’ve paid top drawer. I wouldn’t sleep in it at home either.

Jamesblonde2 · 30/12/2025 11:59

Tbh the £25 price tag on them should have told you they weren’t 100% cotton. We all make mistakes.

Shutuptrevor · 30/12/2025 12:01

Could the servants make use of them?

They prefer White Company sadly.

I’ll take them back to the UK when I next go by car. Then I’ll keep one set as an emergency set there and give the others to the hospice shop.
To answer a pp I bought UK duvet covers as it is a UK duvet.
I’m annoyed with myself for missing that crucial element. Other linen I avoid is micro-fibre, brushed cotton, flannel and jersey. Even after tumble drying ‘eyelashes’ seem to remain stuck to them and have to be picked off.

Needspaceforlego · 30/12/2025 23:20

If you think you could return them to the shop I'd spend £35 to get them back to the shop.
They cost 3*£25 =£75, if you can return them even spending £35 to get them back to the UK it's £40 back in your pocket.

I'd also be tempted to look at postage, DHL or similar.
