to throw them away and start again …

I have an Airbnb in the French Alps and while I was over in the UK for Christmas I bought 3 white duvet sets from Dunelm in the sale.
Paid to upgrade my hand baggage (£35) and TBF I had new towels, cushion covers, large Christmas Pudding in there too. Dragged my very, very, very heavy bag all around Gatwick & Geneva airports via Uber/Train/Plane/Bus/Walk.
Opened it up when I got back and looked properly I’d gone and bought 100% bloody polyester!!! Fogarty, but polyester nonetheless.
AIBU to throw them away? I could try and sell them at a huge loss (bearing in mind they are UK King Size not French King Size so very limited market).
I can’t remember the last time I knowingly slept on non-cotton bedding. Do you think they are useable? Does anyone use polyester? Or shall I leave them by the mollocs for an unsuspecting person to take?

Do you have anyone in the UK who can help exchange them? You could send them back?

Londonrach1 · 31/12/2025 08:21

Pop them in the cupboard as sos spares and get some that your guests can sleep on. Make sure read the label next time

DappledThings · 31/12/2025 08:21

Just use them. I have no idea what my bedding is made of. I choose for a nice pattern not the fibre. Wouldn't have a clue if anywhere I've ever slept had polyester bedding.

I'd be more disappointed by boring plain white than the fabric. I hate that rentals always use it.

QuickBlueKoala · 31/12/2025 08:24

Put them in as spares. Polyester duvets are horrible, but better than no duvets in an emergency…you never know what happens in an air bnb.

NewUserName2244 · 31/12/2025 08:28

If you google “secour refugee” or “secour sans anti” and the name of your town you’ll get somewhere that you can donate.

DierdreDaphne · 31/12/2025 08:33

BeepBoopBop · 30/12/2025 15:00

I’ll take them back to the UK when I next go by car. Then I’ll keep one set as an emergency set there and give the others to the hospice shop.
To answer a pp I bought UK duvet covers as it is a UK duvet.
I’m annoyed with myself for missing that crucial element. Other linen I avoid is micro-fibre, brushed cotton, flannel and jersey. Even after tumble drying ‘eyelashes’ seem to remain stuck to them and have to be picked off.

😂

DierdreDaphne · 31/12/2025 08:35

But yeah, either spares in the airbnb, or church, charity, refuge, etc - assume you visit the nearest city sometimes if where you are is too small to have things like this.

MrsStickMan · 31/12/2025 08:39

Why not give them to your French cleaning company and ask them to dispose of them?

QuickBlueKoala · 31/12/2025 08:40

Nobody in switzerland will want uk sized duvets as they don’t fit any bedding. Don’t donate to a shelter, they won’t be able to use them and will incur costs to dispose !

We have reached peak Mumsnet

bagelsandlox · 31/12/2025 08:43

Not what you asked, but I recommend Linge des Alpes for hotel-style bedding https://www.lingedesalpes.com/

Ponoka7 · 31/12/2025 08:43

Animal charities usually want bedding, you could try one of them. Don't you have textile recycling in France? (Just out of interest). Do you have tip/recycling centres like we do in England?

Greyrock2828 · 31/12/2025 08:47

Hi OP, I think you were a bit bonkers to buy them in the UK. I live in Geneva, if you have a car, you can drop the duvets off at Emmaus in Carouge in Geneva - big second hand warehouse- they take/sell everything.
We have rented alot of chalets/ski apartments- most people buy from the Ikea in Geneva - probably an easier option for you.

Greyrock2828 · 31/12/2025 08:52

Ah realised it's not the duvets, but the duvets covers. They are not much use to anyone but still I'd leave them in Emmaus rather than binning. Otherwise there are plenty of textile/clothing bins in Geneva if youre stopping by, happy to pm you the location. I have one near me and I'm quite close to the border so not a massive detour for you.

Beansandbats · 31/12/2025 08:56

pretty sure I have seen those sets- they say they are temperature control or something I think? So might be worth trying before getting rid? They sound better than most synthetic sheets at least

Purlant · 31/12/2025 08:58

What were you expecting for £35?!!

brennanbones · 31/12/2025 09:01

Purlant · 31/12/2025 08:58

What were you expecting for £35?!!

I’ve bought plenty of super king size cotton ones for that. One for £10 the other week that’s 100% cotton

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 31/12/2025 09:11

Purlant · 31/12/2025 08:58

What were you expecting for £35?!!

No, the excess luggage was £35.

The duvet covers were £25 each. So £75 total on the bedding.

GreenWheat · 31/12/2025 09:12

You made a mistake that's cost you about £100. It happens sometimes but it's not a huge amount in the grand scheme of things in a rental property. If you can donate or recycle the fabric easily then do so, but if it's a massive headache to do that just bin them as a one off. If you generally are conscientious about not wasting things, I think it's OK to bin stuff very infrequently like this. Of course you would avoid it if it's reasonably straightforward to do so, but personally I wouldn't tie myself in knots if it's not.

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 31/12/2025 09:13

When you are all talking about the poly bedding, do you mean poly cotton? I don’t think I’ve ever seen 100% polyester bedding.

FirstdatesFred · 31/12/2025 09:18

How could you not have read the description?

And surely pure cotton is a pain unless it's seersucker or something because of creasing?

Polycotton is fine imo.

I have cotton and linen bedding and it really doesn’t crease much.

i really don’t understand the sneery comments suggesting that wanting cotton bedding is somehow “posh” or elitist.

it’s like those threads where people suggest the same about healthy food.

godmum56 · 31/12/2025 09:40

Never thought I'd say this but I agree. I cannot stand polyester bedding (yes it does exist) or polycotton. My choice for softness is tencel or lyocel or cotton/tencel/lyocel mix.

Yeah I’m not precious about much but I like cotton bedding. It’s not much more expensive if you look out for sales and places like TK maxx, dunelm etc
poly makes me sweat

BeepBoopBop · 31/12/2025 18:45

To answer lots of questions - it is 100% polyester. Soft Touch & Easy Care on the front and 100% polyester on the back.
I can’t post them as a) postage is really expensive and b) customs duty will need to be paid in the UK.
I’m not driving to Geneva from Chamonix to drop off - I’ve managed to swerve Ikea too - I’m trying to avoid the Ikea look. It’s next to impossible but I’m trying. We have a resourcerie at the tip in Les Houches, but it is mobbed by groups of women at opening, grabbing good stuff to sell.
We used to have a Catholic charity here, but that closed a few years ago. No charity shops here due to cost of rent.
My friend has a dress agency, she might take them as a one-off, then English property owners could buy them if they brought over english duvets and need some linen.
I will open a pack and check it out, but I’ll probably take them back when I drive back sometime in spring.
The ironic thing is - I ordered six sets originally - three sets in silver for the sofa bed. Thank god they were out of stock as I would be double annoyed. So I ordered silver Egyptian cotton ones from Amazon - they seem good. Still a minor panic as each packet was inside a very dark grey bag, so I thought I had ordered prison-style bed linen.
@DierdreDaphne you got what I meant by ‘eyelashes’ didn’t you 🤣
Onwards and upwards.
