AIBU to ask how to keep a hoover working for more than two years?

I have just had to replace yet another hoover because the suction has dwindled to the point I’d be better off sucking the dirt off the floor myself. I’ve tried Shark, Seba, Miele, Dyson but nothing ever lasts more than two years either because it falls apart or the suction goes. Is this just normal? I have always had at least one dog, currently two. Not huge shedders but produce a lot of dirt/grass seeds etc all year round. Wooden floors downstairs, carpets upstairs. I’d love any tips for keeping a hoover in good condition!

Henry never dies

Wolfpa · 28/12/2025 21:34

Get yourself a Henry, they are unbreakable

GarlicBreadStan · 28/12/2025 21:34

I suppose regularly cleaning it and getting yearly services on it.

Saying that, I've never done either of those things (other than emptying/replacing the dust bag) and my Hetty Hoover has lasted me for years

sharkstale · 28/12/2025 21:34

Or a Hetty

LLJETO · 28/12/2025 21:34

My Henry broke. And it was one of the originals. I did have it 4 years though.

Joeninety · 28/12/2025 21:35

Chin up. After two years they become valuable collectors items.

Pusstachio · 28/12/2025 21:35

I got a Miele pet as a wedding gift in 2010 and it’s lasted longer than the marriage!

How often do you hoover? We have two cats and a spaniel and hoover once a week.

Quincette · 28/12/2025 21:36

We’ve only ever had 2 vacuum cleaners. Both Miele. The very old one is now the garage hoover as it’s still going strong, I just fancied a new one. The replacement is at least 10 years old.

We replace the filters, as the boxes of bags come with them. Other than that, we do nothing to maintain them.

msmillicentcat · 28/12/2025 21:36

My first Dyson lasted 15 years. My second would have lasted the same except I upgraded for a cordless Dyson which has been going 5 years currently. I’ve just replaced the filter which has given it a new lease of life.

Pusstachio · 28/12/2025 21:36

(New husband, same hoover)

Fibrous · 28/12/2025 21:36

I bought a second hand Henry ten years ago and it’s still going strong. Four pets.

DustyMaiden · 28/12/2025 21:37

I’ve got a shark and a Dyson had 4 years. Clean out filters regularly. Nothing else.

ChilliMochaCoco · 28/12/2025 21:37

Also got a Miele in 2010 and it's still working well

SpicedAppleCake · 28/12/2025 21:37

You need a Henry in your life, he won't let you down

SabrinaThwaite · 28/12/2025 21:37

My Miele has long outlived its 10 year guarantee. I just change the bag and the filters.

fouroclockrock · 28/12/2025 21:37

You must be heavy handed or something. There’s no reason for them to break after 2 years. Ive had my sebo for about 10 years. Only had 3 hoovers in the past 25 years.

Notsuchafattynow · 28/12/2025 21:38

Henry for sure.

I've experienced the same as you, in terms of a variety of makes and tried a Henry after seeing them recommended on here.

It annoys me as it can't seem to turn a corner but the suction is unreal.

OnlyTomSaidThat · 28/12/2025 21:39

Yup, our Henry is almost 10 years old and still acting like he's new. I wouldn't have any other brand tbh.

SereneCoralExpert · 28/12/2025 21:39

How often do you clean the filters?

I must do a quick hoover downstairs every day (much quicker than faffing with a broom and dustpan), my hoovers last a few years.

Mardyybum · 28/12/2025 21:41

We have a Sebo that was my Grans, she had it probably 5 years and we’ve had it for about the same!
I can’t believe it’s still going, we have pets and young DC and it gets a lot of use. Will definitely get another when we have to replace!

Hocuspocus99 · 28/12/2025 21:41

How has a sebo stopped working ? They are robust and last forever .
I am a cleaner and mine travels with me every week.
Mines an x7 and so easy to mantain.

Tigerbalmshark · 28/12/2025 21:41

Our Dyson is still going strong 20 years later! I think the secret is not to use it much 🤣

(we have wooden floors and tend to use a microfibre mop)

tilypu · 28/12/2025 21:41

Clean the filters.

A friend of mine has a wee sideline, buying second hand hoovers that aren't working well and refurbishing them for resale.

The refurb mainly means cleaning the filters.

Horrorscope · 28/12/2025 21:41

All my Miele ones have lasted years…

strawberryandtomato · 28/12/2025 21:41

Henry. 12 years going strong. Bought the handheld one 2 years ago. Love them both
